The Price of Power - Side Stories

Chapter 3: Planning

Notes:

Question: I'm curious, do you think Cross's resistance is fueled more by his morals or by fear of becoming like the others?

Answer: Truthfully, it's largely because of his moral code, and partly because of his loyalty to his friends. Guess which one Nightmare decided to tear down first. ;)

The rest of the side stories after will definitely be shorter than the others, such as this one! It's short, but it hopefully gives some perspective.

Chapter Text

"Who's the new guy?" Color asked, peering around a building to catch a glimpse.

"That's Horror." Killer replied. "I told you about him before."

"Oh, the one who tried to kill you?" Color winced. "Man, I can see what you meant when you said he was strong.."

"Yeah, but that was a while ago. I think we're actually starting to get along now, believe it or not."

"Really?"

"Yeah, surprisingly. He apologized and everything, and..I think things are getting better. It's actually pretty relieving; he might be able to help us."

"That's great, Kills!" Color grinned. "I'm so glad to hear that!"

"Heh, it is what it is. So, how are you doing on your end?"

Color let out a sigh. "Becoming a multiversal superhero is a lot—a lot of paperwork! I have so much to do before they'll let me in, still!"

"Man, who would'a thought our plans would be foiled by paperwork?"

Color let out a giggle. "Yeah! But I'm getting through it as fast as I can; you just hold in there, Kills."

"I'll do my best. Maybe I can focus on fully recruiting Horror; it's not like he likes boss, or anything."

"Oh, I'd assume not! So-"

Killer's soul suddenly felt heavier—darker. Nightmare's attention was shifting to him; he had to end this conversation.

"Shut up!" Killer shouted, slashing his blade at his friend; Color was ready for it. "I don't want to hear your worthless sentiments! I'm not your friend; I never was!"

"But, Killer!" Color played his part well; he genuinely looked distressed, as he should have. Those acting lessons had paid off. "Don't you remember the times we spent together? Don't you want that back? You can't tell me you really like serving that maniac!"

Killer just growled, slashing again. Color avoided the attack, quickly opening a portal and running through. As Killer let out a hiss, Nightmare appeared behind him. The dark king's presence alone was enough to light the fires of hatred in Killer's soul.

"Such a pain, that one is." Nightmare commented. "If he really cared about you, he'd stay and 'defend' you from me instead of saving his own hide."

Killer scoffed. "If he cared, he wouldn't have left me at all."

One of the king's tendrils climbed up to rest on Killer's shoulder—as if that could ever comfort him. But he couldn't shrug it off. He had to play along. He'd signed up for this; he'd started this knowing the costs.

"Quite right." Nightmare agreed. "But now, you see it, and now, you do have someone who will never leave you."

Killer forced a chuckle. "You wouldn't let me go if I wanted, boss."

"And isn't that just the type of stability you deserve?"

"..Yeah. Yeah, it is, boss.."

"Good. Now, how about you go have some fun? You deserve a respite from that idiot's ramblings."

Killer silently nodded, gripping his blade and heading out to cause some more chaos with his teammates. He could talk more with Color next time.

~~~
Killer couldn't help his grin when he saw the rainbow flames peep out from behind a building; today's duo mission had been tense, and a chat with Color was just what he needed! Since Nightmare wasn't here, he abandoned his victim and slid across a frozen lake to get to his destination, where Color caught him just before he could topple over.
"Killer!" Color laughed. "What are you doing?"
"Oh, you know, the usual: freaking out mentally!" Killer let out a nervous chuckle as Color's expression turned serious.
"What's wrong?"
"Boss's plans are going quicker than we expected, Color. He got Cross yesterday; he's in the dungeon right now. I..I'm not ready! I thought we had more time! He's going to go after his brother next, and if he does that-"
"Kills." Color grabbed Killer's hands, giving them a comforting squeeze. "Hey, it's okay. We can work with this, okay? It's not the end of the world."
"But..but we were gonna- We were gonna get out.."
"We were." Color sighed. "But this is just a setback, okay? We'll have to figure out a new plan—one that doesn't involve getting outside help from Cross..or Dream."
"Dust and Horror were so.."
"I know. I was, too." Color pulled Killer into a hug. "We all were."
They had almost been ready to start their plan, but Cross's capture made it impossible. And now, Dream would follow; that would ruin everything. They needed a new course of action. Killer wished it would have happened earlier; at least then everyone's hopes wouldn't have been dashed so thoroughly. But now, they had to redo everything. They couldn't make a plan that relied on outside help other than Color; it just wouldn't do.
They had to think smarter.
~~~

"Blue wouldn't rat us out." Cross reminded. "He's not like that. He'd help."

"But we'd have to speak where he could listen!" Killer didn't like it—not one bit. "We'd have to say everything out loud! I don't want to do that; I don't want to put the plan in that kind of danger! If boss finds out, we're done, Cross! Do you understand that?"

"I do! Killer, I'm not trying to put the plan in danger. I'm just..Blue is suffering, Kills. He's been outspoken against boss the whole time he's been here, and he's suffering. I don't want to watch him suffer knowing I can do something about it! If he knows about the plan, we could give him some hope, Kills..maybe he could feign something to get hurt less. Do you know what it's like, walking up to one of your oldest friends every day just to have to watch them be abused beefore your very eyes, and you can't do a thing about it?!"

Killer clenched his fists as memories flooded his head. "I sure as hell do, Cross. I know, all right? It sucks! You weren't there, back when it was just the three of us. We had to watch him do the most horrible things..sometimes, he even forced us to watch. It's not like I don't understand; I do! But it's too dangerous. Do you realize what could happen if he's compromised?"

Cross let out a sigh. "He won't be compromised. Blue is strong, Killer—stronger than you give him credit for."

"Maybe he is. Maybe he's got a stronger will than any of us. But he's already angered boss and Dream enough; what if they've already got something planned for him? You know as well as I do how easy it is to break, Cross. But if we tell him now, and he cracks? We're not back to ground zero, Cross; boss might never let us claw our way back to ground zero! He is dangerous, Cross. I'm sorry about Blue—I really am—but if it comes down to it, I'll never be for him knowing. You should have asked when he first got here, before he could dig his grave so deep; maybe we could have done something back then."

"..So that's it?" Cross let out a scoff. "We're just going to leave him on his own? We're not going to help him?"

"We don't help people, Cross. We're murderers; that's who we're going to be until we're free. Don't say a word to Blue; that's final. If we're lucky, we'll get out of this place before something bad happens to him."

"..." Cross bowed his head with a sigh. "He's my friend.."

"..I know. I'm sorry."

~~~
Color had been worried; it was no surprise, really. From his point of view, things had just been getting worse in the castle with no end in sight! Dream was on the verge of falling subject to his brother's whims, and Color could feel trouble brewing. As Killer approached him in the middle of a mission, the other's grim expression practically told the story on its own.
"Dream's fallen." Killer spoke, solemnly. "But the plan is going well. Cross is his personal guard, and he's working his way into getting his full trust."
"That's good." Color nodded. "How's Blue?"
"..He's not doing great. Dream's hard on him; he constantly looks like he's a step from Falling Down. Maybe I'm regretting not letting him in on the plan."
Color sighed. "You decided against it after all?"
"It was just too much of a risk, this far in. Besides, they're going to do something horrible to him; boss has had that shine in his eye for over a week now."
"How did Cross take the news?"
"...Not well." Killer crossed his arms. "Bad. But he'll get over it. Blue is a risk, and none of the rest of us are willing to test fate."
"I understand." Color nodded. "So, any other news?"
"..Big news. We're gonna attack Omega."
Color grimaced. "That's not good."
"Pretty bad, actually. Our working plan is to get beat up by Ink, but their working plan is to shoot Ink. Dream's got some power to infuse his arrows with a sleep spell, and it's been tested; it might just disable Ink."
"So stop arrows at all costs?"
"Yeah, but stay out of sight. The attack is scheduled for the fifteenth."
"That's only a few days from now.."
Killer nodded. "It's a good thing we could meet up. I need you to keep an eye on Ink all day; the attack is scheduled for late morning, but we might run late or leave early; I'm not sure. Maybe try to break from him when you get a chance, but don't leave him alone; stalk him. I don't know exaclty how they plan to get that arrow in him, but you'll have to be ready for it at any time."
"I'll do everything I can, then. "
"Let's hope it's enough."
They had to be ready.
