Summary
“What is going on with you?” she hisses. “You’re being really weird, even for you.”
“I am not— weird,” he says. But he’s stiff. Evading her gaze.
She narrows her eyes at him. Earlier, following her around, and with the sleeping bag— the growling.
As she watches, she realizes he’s being downright squirrely. He knows something is up. He’s just not telling her. She eyes him suspiciously. “You’re not going feral, are you?”
“I am not going feral.”

Stuck in the Super-Duper Mart during a storm with Charon, the Lone Wanderer realizes far too late what’s happening. He’s not going feral— he’s in rut.

Charon just stares at her. “The um—” she waves at him. “The you thing,” she says, indicating his rut, and then gestures to herself, “or the me thing.”
It’s like Pandora’s baby. Or— wait. No. Schrodinger’s baby.
Whatever. The baby that may or may not be in her box. Or whatever.

After the Lone Wanderer and Charon spend their collective heat-and-rut together, they discover Charon’s seed isn’t as barren as they thought. And just as they’re settling into the idea of it, heartbreak follows.
