Chapter Text
You are my sunshine
The beginning of the end
Lance and Keith were walking towards the kitchen after playing various rounds of smash bros in the common room in the castle. They had reached the fork in the hallway where the left headed to the kitchen but to the right headed to the training room.
Lance said “Well Mullet this is where we split ways” and started to head to the kitchen to grab some food goo. Keith grabbed Lance’s hand before he could leave and stared into Lance’s beautiful ocean eyes as they widened in surprise.
Keith couldn't bear the thought of leaving Lance now, not after they had managed to get along for one evening. What if when Lance left so did this tentative peace that has been created between them? Dread pooled in the raven haired boy’s stomach, so he decided that he would do what he does best. Be reckless, and push Cuban’s buttons.
"Let's go, after all I am pretty hungry after kicking your ass at smash bros," Keith said as a smirk appeared on his face. "What!!! No, I totally won more matches than you Mullet" squawked Lance. The Cuban pretended to be outraged and threw his hands up in the air, yet never letting go of Keith's hand. The two boys made their way to the kitchen bickering about who won while holding hands there the entire way. Keith smiled at Lance's antics, while Lance was doing his best to not turn red.
They stumbled across Pidge, quite literally, since she was laying in the middle of the hallway. She was sound asleep with her hands still on her computer. Lance chucked, of course Pidge would interrupt his bonding moment with Keith. That little gremlin, even in sleep she was ruining his master plan of getting closer to the mulleted object of his affections. Lance let go of Keith's hand and gently picked up Pidge, cradling her gently. "I should get this one to bed," said Lance fondly while gazing down at Pidge missing the mixed emotions that flashed in Keith’s eyes.
"Of course," said Keith with a smile that was barely there, visible in the minimal tilt of his lips. The pale boy was disappointed that the blue eyed boy would be leaving, but it also warmed his heart to see how he treated Pidge with love, like a little sister. Oh how he wished that Lance would look at him like that, but preferably in a nonplatonic and very gay way but ravientte would take what he could get.
"Let's hang out again Keithy, this was fun," Lance said as he turned around and headed back towards the Paladin's quarters. Keith felt butterflies erupt in his stomach. He was so gone for this boy, and yet Lance had no clue. How oblivious could Lance be? Very apparently, not even holding his hand was obvious enough apparently.
Keith sighed, Lance meant so much to him, yet they were only tentative friends. The Cuban was like sunshine, always bright and cheery. Lance made everything better. Oh how Keith wished he could be more than Lance's friend. But somethings just aren't meant to be. Keith shook his head, thinking about the impossible future wouldn't do him any good. Better to go train, maybe he could even find Shiro to spar with.
