Unending Night Festival

Summary:

Night Raven College is not only famous for its schooling. Bearing seven dormitories full of developing magicians—many of them troublemakers or worse—the private academy has produced powerful and wicked graduates for a hundred years. Yet at the beginning of the current school year, the tumultuous arrival of a magicless student marks the first of a spiral of events that rock the foundation of the world itself.

NRC is notoriously unfriendly to strangers, let alone a scrawny, unimpressive kid who has no magical talent. Despite all odds, “Yuu” is enrolled in the school as a Directing Student and quickly becomes the centre of attention, for better or for worse. Whether it is due to the Monster she calls partner or the trouble that follows every footstep, Yuu is an existence that is difficult to ignore. NRC’s students and staff learn this for themselves very quickly.

Side-story to “Yuu and the Power of Magic”. Told from the perspective of everyone except Yuu.

Caution! |

  • This derivative work is itself an offshoot of another derivative work titled Yuu and the Power of Magic (title may be changed), so if you haven't read that you are going to be very confused.
  • Even if you have, be warned that this work is being written by an amateur with no talent for plot nor characterization nor wordplay. It is ONLY recommended for those who can withstand a great deal of stupidity and possess a high tolerance level (何でも許せる方向け).
  • Light spoilers for Harry Potter (the main series), although elements from that series will be nearly nonexistent because THIS story is told from the perspectives of people who don't know Yuu's world exists.
  • Spoilers for Twisted Wonderland’s main story up to Episode 7. Many event story and/or Personal Story/card spoilers. As it is an ongoing series, do forgive any edits to conform to information as it is released. Edits will be marked at the bottom of the chapter in the Notes.
  • In addition, there MIGHT (might not) be some unpleasant actions or thoughts carried out by the characters within this story, including occurrences that may not agree with your morals. They are all budding Villains, after all. Please be careful and protect yourself if you see anything you don't like by closing the window. The T rating will be followed (i.e. some language, violence, unpleasant themes without graphic descriptions).

First of all, I would like to express my sincerest and humblest appreciation for the readers who have supported my little story for five months! Thanks to you, we have reached the following milestones:

  • 60 user subscriptions!
  • Over 200 bookmarks!
  • Over 195 story subscriptions!
  • Over 25,500 views!
  • Over 350 unique comments!!! (Not including my responses)

Wow…!! (Happy dance) Thank you for being willing to take a chance on some unknown authour’s first story. Just a bunch of “thank yous” isn’t enough, so in return, I’ve answered one of the most popular requests, which is “reading Yuu’s story from the perspective of other students”!

Unending Night Festival will be a collection of side-stories and materials to complement my work in progress, Yuu and the Power of Magic, which is a Harry Potter × Disney’s Twisted Wonderland derivative story. The main story follows protagonist Yuu’s perspective in a third-person limited frame. Given that she isn’t exactly a reliable narrator, reading the stories contained here might change the way you regard her and the people around her. Here, I dig a little deeper into the motivations, growth, and darkness of the 23 main characters + instructors and staff + side-characters.

Updates will be way more sporadic than the main story, mostly because I have to practice writing in perspectives of other characters because I am a n00b. There may or may not be a set schedule like the main story, but please be patient with me!

Okay. Ready? 行こうぜ Wonderland!

Chapter 1: 紹介ユウ!

Summary:

A character card for Yuu, created in the same style as everyone else's in-game (or in the Magical Archives book).

Notes:

We’re going to start off small with something that I’ve seen requested—information about Yuu (that isn’t spoilers)! Those who have expressed interest in creating fanart/stories etc. of her (I cry in joy by the way) can probably follow these guidelines? Or something?? Or you can just read this like a page from the Magical Archives book.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

I. A PRIMER ON ‘YUU’

Who is Yuu? |

The character Yuu (default name) can be considered the “player” character or the protagonist within the smartphone game Disney’s Twisted Wonderland. The main story is told largely through their perspective. They are allegedly from a different world (presumably “our world”) and wake up in the Mirror Chamber within Night Raven College after going to sleep normally. After a series of events, they take up the role of a Prefect or Directing Student within the school as a partner to the Monster called Grim.

Though Game Yuu is the “original” player-character, a manga adaptation of the game has been published as a serialization within the Gファンタジー (G Fantasy) magazine starting in its April 2021 issue (the first anniversary of the game’s release). It is titled 「DISNEY TWISTED-WONDERLAND THE COMIC」and features individual, original “Yuu” characters whose personality/setting, character design and creation were done by Toboso Yana (the lead artist and creative writer for the game). Toboso-sensei has commented on her Twitter that these protagonists possess their unique “life” and personality, and while they each have a few similarities to the game’s player character, will employ quite a different approach in involvement with the characters from each dormitory they interact with.

And there’s more! On March 18, 2022 (the second anniversary of the game’s release), an official and hefty novelization of the Prologue and Episode 1 of the game was published by Square Enix. It features its own “Yuu” with his own personality, the same way the manga creates their main character, and is written by one of the Personal Story writers, Hioki Jun.

Currently, three (3) known established Yuu characters exist within the multi-media franchise apart from Game Yuu. There is the Yuu from the first Episode of the manga serialization, ~EPISODE of HEARTSLABYUL~, the Yuu from the second Episode of the manga serialization, ~EPISODE of SAVANACLAW~, and the Yuu from the novelization of the first Episode, TWISTED WONDERLAND THE NOVEL EPISODE 1.

Now that we’re done with the basics, let’s go a little deeper on the information we know about the player character(s)! While we have much information about all other characters in the series, our own character’s situation and information is deliberately kept vague to allow us to relate to them. But! This doesn’t mean that they don’t have their own characteristics and traits subtly laced into the choices and actions they take throughout the course of the main story.

※ Note: My information comes only from the Japanese version of the game and other media.

Established information regarding the in-game player character Yuu |

※ Note: My information comes only from the Japanese version of the game and other media.

  • Yuu wakes up in a coffin in the Mirror Chamber wearing the ceremonial robes (see any SR Ceremonial Robe card). Grim tries to steal this to masquerade as a student.
  • Yuu is small in stature (a lot shorter than Vil, according to Grim) and thin (according to Sebek, Vil). Looks 'feminine' (according to Crowley) but does not make Deuce (who is nervous around girls) uneasy.
  • Yuu has a 'boring' appearance or aura compared to everyone (according to Ace, Crowley, Azul, Grim, Jade), but hair colour is unusual (‘fur’, says Crewel).
  • Other remarks on appearance: Vil believes they are fit to “stand beside him”; Leona says they “don’t look half bad” in their Ceremonial Robes; Jamil says the same thing about their uniform (Some of these might be jokes, though. Characters seem to like playing tricks on Yuu, who always provides great reactions for them. I’ve noticed almost every single character get a rise out of the player character at least once!)
  • Yuu did not bring anything to Twisted Wonderland, not even a smartphone. They are, however, familiar with its use (Episode 4; Fairy Gala; Episode 5 etc.).
  • Yuu (and Grim, who is Seat 9) is in Year 1, Class A with Ace and Deuce.
  • Yuu attends classes and studies. Has a serious nature (commented on by Cater, Azul, Ruggie, others). In fact, Ace thought Yuu would be the “type of person he dislikes the most” (Ace’s Episode Up voice). Did not fail the exams before Winter Holiday despite the astronomical disadvantage of being from a different world, but is regarded by some teachers as being a problem student (Crewel’s & Trein’s Exam voice lines).
  • Yuu is often described as “mysterious” (不思議) (Riddle, Jamil), “strange” (Silver).
  • Yuu tends to be fearless, treating upperclassmen and people with (in)famous reputations the same as they treat everyone else. (Commented on by Riddle, Leona, Malleus.) This may be because they see each person for themselves and not their reputation nor failures. Examples include: fight against Leona in Episode 2; museum visit at end of Episode 3; Tsuno-tarou’s identity reveal in Episode 5; inviting Idia to their home after Episode 6; asking Leona to be their driver after the Savanna event. (According to Ace in Episode 5: Are you not afraid for your life!?)
  • Consequently, Yuu manages to get along with everyone (All card voices, seriously. Also Jamil mentions this in the player’s second year birthday line.)
  • Yuu may have the qualities of an animal tamer. (Crowley’s Prologue line concerning this: “Well, this beast tamer looks like they’d be swallowed whole by the beasts in a single mouthful…and, how should I put it, they also look quite feminine…But my instinct…”)
  • Yuu does not know about the seven movies the Great Seven are based on, nor is very familiar with the 'voice in the mirror' they see (Mickey Mouse). Perhaps they are unaware of Disney as a company. (This comes from their reaction within the game to their ‘dreams’; they’re pretty confused about them and only really become alarmed in Episode 7. Slow!!)
  • Yuu is tough enough to fit into NRC without being overwhelmed, remarked on by characters as “becoming reliable” and/or “persevering” (Sebek; Crowley). They can have a great night's sleep from the day they appear in Twisted Wonderland (Prologue). One may say they have nerves of steel to have faced 6.5 Overblots without the use of magic and still get along normally with erstwhile enemies afterwards. (Examples of nerves-of-steel behaviour include: betting Ramshackle in a deal without hesitation, threatening to punch Leona, talking with a strange mouselike creature in a fogged-up mirror, flying across the entire world in search of Grim despite being injured by him, etc.)
  • Yuu is called "good-natured" and "nice" often derisively by many students (Azul, Ruggie, Grim…). They tell the character, ‘you're going to suffer losses’. Jack says that they’re careless/inattentive and he can’t leave them alone (Episode 3). Malleus says that they look like their head is in the clouds (Episode 3).
  • Yuu can be rather sharp-tongued and insulting (dialogue choices to Ace & Deuce, Grim, and basically everyone else. Grim sometimes reacts to this comically). This may be bravery or insensitivity. Teachers are NOT an exception to this—listen to the Exam voice lines, especially Trein’s and Crewel’s second collection (I think it’s Unified Exam 8?)... Other examples include: pointing out Riddle’s faults to his face in Episode 1 despite Riddle’s reputation as a tyrant; refusing to let Leona sleep by screaming themselves hoarse in the middle of his room at night; reaction to Malleus’ identity reveal; MANY character voice lines.
  • They have showed serious lack of restraint in physically touching other characters, like flipping Riddle’s coat, tugging at SR ceremonial robes, grabbing tails, dragging Idias… Basically, every Tap 5 voice on every card is this. If you read all of Deuce’s and Leona’s SSR lines, it’s a wonder they haven’t been murdered already with how much they get into others’ personal space... It’s also a miracle that the characters—instead of getting angry—instead get USED to Yuu’s fool... Bravery.
  • Yuu is more 'gloomy' (introvert) than 'sunny' (extravert). (Idia's ‘gloomy character’ partner according to him.) They have a talent for sword-wielding (Silver). Arms are thin (Sebek). Their voice is extremely ‘normal’ and they’re tone-deaf (according to Azul). Sometimes no one can tell what they’re thinking (Cater). Seems they’d be skilled with makeup (Kalim). Their food-serving skills suck (Floyd).
  • Yuu spends much of their time with Grim (Hallowe’en event, Anniversary Events 1, 2, 3, others). It is seen how much Yuu cares for Grim throughout Episode 6, and how they are beginning to consider Ramshackle “home” (end of Episode 6). Despite this, Yuu always seems to have the goal of returning back to their real world, which they mention throughout the main story AND events (Star Wish event). Sometimes, other characters seem to completely ignore this (Deuce, Malleus); others comment on it (Ortho).
  • Yuu seems to have a positive (or not-negative) opinion on magic, as shown by her response to Rollo Flamme’s questioning during the Glorious Masquerade event. (Obviously this makes him Very Angry though.)
  • Silver seems to know Yuu from somewhere.
  • Being together with Yuu brings adventure and trouble all the time (Ace, Malleus).
  • Yuu’s nicknames: Koebi-chan (li’l shrimp) by Floyd; Trickster by Rook; li’l kitty (子猫ちゃん) by Ruggie; herbivore by Leona; human child by Malleus, human by Sebek; baby potato & spud by Vil (I just made up this translation!).

Established information concerning the manga character Enma Yuuken |

※ Spoilers through the end of the Heartslabyul manga

  • This “Yuu” is named Enma Yuuken (円満 雄剣). Later on, he is referred to simply as “Yuu” (post Chapter 3~).
  • The family name basically means “things going well” or “being complete” (can also be pronounced “enman”, a common phrase meaning “free from trouble”)—however, it has the exact same pronunciation as a different Enma (閻魔), also known as King Yama or the dude who controls the underworld in Buddhism or Hinduism. You can see representations of Enma/Yama in a lot of manga like Dragon Ball and a lot of Chinese cartoons.
  • The first name is a rather unusual spelling of the name Yuuken (which in itself is kind of an unusual name for a modern-day boy). The phrase “yuuken” (勇健) means “of sound health”, but the characters spelling Yuuken’s name mean “manly/brave/heroic/excellent” (雄, yuu) and “sword” (剣). It also matches his personality perfectly.
  • Enma Yuuken is a second-year male high school student living in Tokyo, Japan. (This means he is seventeen, older than Ace, Deuce and the other first years.)
  • Enma Yuuken attends a public high school called the Metropolitan Hibari High School (Hibari here means “skylark” and is also a common last name). A metropolitan high school in Tokyo means one that is sanctioned by the Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education. There are over 180. Something interesting to note is that these schools often have a hard time participating in national athletic competitions compared to private high schools (which are very common in Tokyo). This is due to the school board focusing on eliminating the academic gap between their public high schools and private ones.
  • Enma Yuuken is the vice-captain of his high school’s kendo club. He is tall and strong. (Quite a bit bigger than Riddle Rosehearts.) (Currently the guess is that he’s 185 cm tall.) He often carries a wooden sword within a black carrying bag over his shoulder. Students report that his kendo is greater the level of a high-schooler. Apparently he personally revitalized his school’s kendo club alone by gathering members to finally participate in an official match, exerting a great effort over the past year.
  • Unfortunately, before he is able to attend the match, he is struck by a huge horse-drawn carriage and wakes up in a coffin, still wearing his school uniform.
  • Enma Yuuken is a good vice-captain who does his best in supporting other kendo club members like “Koito Saya” (小絲 沙也), a first year who is much smaller and weaker than him. It is worth noting that this Koito’s last name sounds a lot like “kobito” (small person, dwarf as mentioned in Snow White) and his first name is quite feminine if not for the second character (也) which is often used in masculine names. Throughout the manga, Koito is used as a source of Yuuken’s motivation to be a reliable student.
  • Enma Yuuken bursts out of the coffin alone (without Grim’s interference) and does so right in front of the entire student body. [Quite a big difference from the player character]
  • Enma Yuuken sees Headmaster Crowley and immediately holds his wooden sword (in its bag) out threateningly as if ready to attack him. (He thinks Crowley is extremely suspicious.)
  • Enma Yuuken can’t use magic, nor can he understand Crowley’s explanation. He immediately tries to leave the building and refuses further conversation. (Crowley: “I’ve never heard of anyone refusing admittance to the school!”) Later in the story, Riddle’s Unique Magic works on him – he has no magic, but he gains a heavy collar around his neck.
  • Enma Yuuken tends to ignore his surroundings when he has a set idea. For example, his plan is to leave campus and ask around for a way home on foot. Also has a bit of a ‘natural airhead’ (天然) tendency. When first meeting Ghosts he accepts them as ‘members of the dorm’ and marvels at his ability to see ghosts without ‘the Sense’ (霊感). When Crowley allows him to live in Ramshackle, he is genuinely thankful and doesn’t seem to notice its disrepair? Or he doesn’t care.
  • Enma Yuuken can at least hold his own against one of the Blot creatures found in the Dwarfs’ Mine. With a wooden sword. Later on this is shown to work against much stronger enemies, such as Riddle Rosehearts. Granted, Riddle isn’t the most physically accomplished person.
  • Enma Yuuken brought a bunch of personal possessions over to the Twisted Wonderland, such as his kendo uniform and bokuto, his flip phone, and his bag. If this phone isn’t extremely outdated in his time, it might be a sign that not only did he isekai-travel…but he also time-slipped forwards from an era where smartphones were not widespread. (i.e. 2012 to 2015? or something. In Japan, anyway.)
  • Enma also has a kendo mask/uniform he gives to Deuce (and later, Grim) during the fight against Riddle. While he mostly stands back, out of the way of Heartslabyul’s inter-dorm conflict, he defends Riddle strongly when the dorm students yell at him. He also helps Deuce out during his struggle with being a “model student”.
  • Enma Yuuken was admitted as a student together with Grim, but he did not receive the Ghost Camera.

Established information concerning the manga character Hirasaka Yuuka |

※ Spoilers through the second magazine issue of the Savanaclaw manga

  • This “Yuu” is named Hirasaka Yuuka (比良坂 悠河). Her nickname is Yuu.
  • The family name Hirasaka is a not-uncommon last name used in Japan. However, continuing with Enma Yuuken’s theme, this particular spelling of it is the same as used in the “location” yomotsu hirasaka (黄泉比良坂), which depicts the hill (saka) that marks “boundary between the living world and the world of the dead”. After reading Episode 7 Chapter 2, this name does not seem to be chosen just for a simple theme...
  • The first name Yuuka is quite an uncommon feminine first name and uses even more uncommon kanji to spell it. The first kanji “Yuu” is 悠, meaning calm, leisurely and composed; the second character; the second “ka” is 河, an alternative kanji spelling for “river”. You can see the personality of Yuuken and Yuuka reflected immediately in their names.
  • Hirasaka Yuuka is a second-year high school student, revealed as being 17 years old (older than Ace and Deuce). She also lives in relatively modern-day Japan. Unfortunately, we have not seen the high school she is attending. We do know from the brief glimpse of the area she is in that she is located within the Tochigi Prefecture of Kanto in Japan, pretty much smack-dab in the middle of the country. We do also know that her school is most likely a public school.
  • Hirasaka Yuuka possesses a black belt in judo and has the nickname, “The King of the Shoulder Throw”. Whether this is a parallel to “The King of the Beasts” is unknown (just my guess...).
  • Hirasaka Yuuka is a key member of her high school’s judo team, and has recently won the Kanto Inter-High School Judo Championship match with her unrivalled shoulder throw.
  • On her way home from the championship match, she bends down to take care of a cat sitting in a box in the rain. When the cat runs off, Yuuka gives chase and sees a giant horse-drawn carriage rushing towards her and loses consciousness. She awakes in her gym uniform, opens a coffin, and arrives in the middle of the opening ceremony. Note: Grim did not open her coffin.
  • Unlike Yuuken, Yuuka has the NRC uniform at the beginning of her story. Like Yuuken, she possesses her bag and some things like exercise clothing that was brought over from her world.
  • Hirasaka Yuuka is someone who seems skilled at taking care of others, such as Grim. She is portrayed as a kind student who would go out of their way to help another, stopping for a cat in the rain. When Crowley gives her and Grim the task of researching injured students, Yuuka agrees without a second thought.
  • Yuuka is shown as often having half-lidded eyes and a calm personality. She does not seem easily surprised or taken off-guard. Her expression doesn’t change much, and she seems to prefer actions over words. (She talks a lot less than the other characters, if you notice.)
  • The story in Yuuka’s Episode starts after Heartslabyul’s incident has been resolved.
  • While female, Yuuka wears the standard male uniform in school. It is unclear whether her gender is known to the rest of the school/teachers. However, the Ghosts and Grim are probably aware of this (see Chapter 2, when Yuuka is in exercise clothing).

Established information concerning the novel character Kuroki Yuuya |

※ Spoilers for the first volume of the official novelization

  • This “Yuu” is named Kuroki Yuuya (黒木 優也). Because the first name is seemingly hard to pronounce, Ace begins to call him “Yuu” and later on everyone else does too.
  • The family name Kuroki is a rather common Japanese surname, meaning “black tree”. If there is something in Japanese mythology about this last name, I haven’t found it yet...
  • The first name Yuuya is also a relatively common spelling of a Japanese male first name. The kanji character for “Yuu” (優) means kind, gentle, excellent. The kanji for “ya” (也) is a common suffix for male first names in Japan like I mentioned earlier, and means "to be”.
  • We don’t have a clear image of Yuuya like in a manga, but he is depicted as being (probably not much) taller than Riddle and “normal”-looking in every way (Note: for a Japanese 16-year-old) with slightly rounded eyes.
  • Kuroki Yuuya is a first-year high school student living in (relatively) modern-day Japan. His high school is not specified. He does not seem part of any clubs at school, nor does he have any presence in the classroom. It seems that he was unable to find true friends or a hobby to put his time into, as later mentioned to Ace and Deuce.
  • One day, Kuroki Yuuya stumbles at a red light on his way home from school and sees a horse-drawn carriage before losing consciousness. He then awakens in the coffin in the Mirror Chamber, arriving in the middle of the opening ceremony. Yuuya is wearing the SR Ceremonial Robes and has lost all of his possessions he was previously carrying.
  • Kuroki Yuuya is depicted as having a dogmatic aversion to “fighting”. Whether it is arguing, physical fights, or any kind of dissent, Yuuya hates fighting and will do anything to avoid it. At first glance, this seems to make him a terrible fit for a school like NRC, where fighting daily is the norm. The beginning of the year shows him having a tough time reconciling this rather wild environment to his own values.
  • This personality trait leads to Yuuya having negative feelings towards Grim, Ace, Deuce (and pretty much everyone) at the beginning of the novel. However, through the experiences they have together, Yuuya becomes friends with them. He seems to be especially good at interacting with Grim despite Grim’s aggressive nature, as commented on by the Ghosts. Yuuya says that Grim is the “only person he can talk to without worrying about what he is saying”. He also says to Ace and Deuce that he doesn’t know if he can call them “friends”, but they’re the closest thing to “friends” he’s ever had.
  • Kuroki Yuuya has had a dream of his “school” in his world, where it seems that not a single person remembers him, nor is his presence felt in the classroom. Even when the bell rings, no one seems to feel anything wrong with him not being present. Yuuya feels an overwhelming sense of relief after this dream.
  • Kuroki Yuuya is otherwise a sensitive and good-natured student, which makes him feel highly uncomfortable during the first weeks of school when his presence brings unwelcome attention. While he is treated as a regular student by the teachers and helped out in small ways, many other students make fun of him and try to attack him. Yuuya is negatively affected by this and is distressed about being separated from his parents, who both work. He is worried about not being able to see them again.
  • During Riddle’s Overblot fight, Yuuya’s hatred of fighting fails to get him out of trouble like it usually does and instead brings him right into the middle of it. He demonstrates an interesting strength of will (or craziness) by breaking up Riddle’s duel with Ace and asking them both to “stop fighting please”, completely ignoring the atmosphere. When this fails, he also basically pushes/convinces Cater to fight Riddle during his Overblot... So they can stop fighting.
  • Later on this trait is highlighted by Ace as being kind of out of the ordinary (Ace: Normally people don’t do that), as Yuuya himself usually tends to stay away from fights. It is shown that the extent of Yuuya’s disdain for fighting has him make bold moves even towards someone like Riddle Rosehearts. In a way, this “strength” of Yuuya’s makes him perhaps a fit for NRC, for he cares only about not fighting and ignores everyone else’s backstory and/or needs to fulfil this wish.
  • Trivia: Kuroki Yuuya’s favourite food is rice, because you can combine rice with anything and it will taste good.
  • In the novel, it is revealed that while Yuuya seems to be speaking Japanese and hearing Japanese and reading Japanese, some form of magic is “perfectly translating” the language both ways so that he understands what is being said, and others understand him.

My current story's differences from the above |

  • All of Game Yuu’s qualities also apply to My Story’s Yuu except the following notes, since I try to follow the [admittedly thin] in-game characterization as closely as I can.
  • Story Yuu is also a girl, like Hirasaka Yuuka. Game Yuu’s gender is not specified.
  • Story Yuu, like Enma Yuuken and Hirasaka Yuuka, is NOT wearing the ceremonial robes when she wakes up in the Mirror Chamber. Also like Enma Yuuken, she has very similar opinions about receiving shelter from the Headmaster in return for odd jobs/janitorial duties.
  • Story Yuu has some vague recollections of the Disney movies she's seen and is aware of who Mickey Mouse is.
  • Story Yuu possesses magic from the world of Harry Potter and is a developing witch (this is the whole premise of the story). She also brought her wand to the Twisted Wonderland, as well as the clothes she is wearing (like Yuuka and Yuuken).
  • Story Yuu possesses voice/musical training, but is loath to reveal it since it's an obvious 'girl's' voice when she is acting as a male.

※ Like every other thing I write, this list and the list above will be updated every so often to add more information! You can check the latest update date in the Notes at the bottom of the page.

Conclusion |

The above primer is just a beginning reference point. Game Yuu, Yuuka, Yuuken, Yuuya, and my story’s Yuu are their own separate characters with their own personalities, lives and histories. But don’t forget that my story’s Yuu is ALSO in many ways the “player character”! Try exploring how I’ve incorporated details of the “player character” into her personality: for example, the in-game character likes hardworking people, so Yuu does too.

So... Why did you put so much info about all these other Yuu characters in here? |

Why do you think I did? 🤭

II. CHARACTER PROFILE | Yuu・ユウ

Caution! | Mild spoilers for up to Chapter 36~ of my story, “Yuu and the Power of Magic”.

Name

Yuu [Family name redacted]

Dormitory

Ramshackle Dorm

Hogwarts House

[from WizardingWorld.com]

Ravenclaw

(The Sorting Hat briefly considered Slytherin.)

It took 3:33 for the Sorting to finish.

Appearance

Summary

Thin. Small. Pale skin. Blue eyes.

More details, due to popular demand

1. Hair

Straight, black hair typical for a Japanese person.

Prior to Chapter 31 | Possesses straight black hair tied tightly at the nape in a knot so it doesn’t get in the way. At Chapter 1, it falls to her shoulders when untied; by Chapter 16, it falls over an inch below. At Chapter 24, it is almost at her armpits. A full row of bangs fall over her eyes.

After Chapter 31 | Short hair stopping around her neck/under her ears. Bangs have been trimmed to expose her eyes and some of her forehead. The whole thing looked very uneven for a few hours before Jamil fixed it. Now, it resembles a standard Japanese boy’s haircut, not unsimilar to that of Hirasaka Yuuka (less wavy though).

2. Demeanour

Clean, neat and unassuming appearance apart from her hair, which tends to become messy. Absolutely terrible bedhead. In Chapter 14 it is revealed that she does her best to maintain a neat appearance to prevent negative attention, but also tries to avoid all attention after past experiences. How much of her plain appearance is created on purpose?

Has good posture when standing and sitting, but when researching/reading something, will slouch heavily. Carries a heavy bag around filled with books, but seems used to this weight. However, arm strength seems to be rather lacking.

Wears NRC’s uniforms in the standard way (long-sleeved athletic uniform; buttons done all the way up on the lab coat, no modifications to any uniform, etc.). However, the winter uniform’s tie is often done crookedly in a ribbon. (Riddle and Jade make it a point to fix it.)

When they (if ever) release the summer uniforms like mentioned in the Magical Archives, I would love to describe Yuu wearing it!!!

3. Eyes

Bright blue eyes, matching the colour of the flames sprouting from Grim’s ears. According to Ace and Floyd, it’s the ‘least boring’ part about her. According to Idia, something’s up. Yuu has mentioned having to hide the colour of her eyes when studying abroad at Mahoutokoro, Japan’s school of magic. She cites “negative attention”...

Even more details, due to more popular demand

While I believe you are free to imagine Yuu’s appearance in any way you would like, MANY many people have asked me for a visual guide. So here are the author’s very messy and bad sketches of their image of Yuu on poipiku (created for Yuu’s past birthdays!).

Physical Properties

Physical Strength

Low stamina and lower endurance. Tires out quickly (see Chapters 2, 15; 30, 31; during fights her movement is limited to how willing Jack is to carry her). However, short bursts of activity (such as punching someone: Chapters 11, 12, 15, 24 etc.) seem average? Aim & balance are both subpar. Hates running.

Tendencies/Habits

Possesses a single-minded focus on her current objective. Tends to get invested in a research topic, tire out, and fall asleep in random places while immersed in absorbing knowledge. This is partially because she did not have a “set” place to sleep (see Chapter 14) until arriving at Hogwarts. Otherwise called “lack of self-control”. Like many only/independent children, she is used to doing things her own way. Tends to consider authority and rules guidelines, although usually she remains within them to avoid sticking out.

Voice

Voice is rather low for a girl of fifteen. A comfortable alto. Her singing voice, however, is first soprano. (Yuu is not aware, but she has an excellent vocal range.) Talks in the very lowest register of her voice. Can let out a loud belly shout (Chapter 2, 16) when necessary. This is because voice-training involves standing and breathing properly, which also explains her posture.

Weight

BMI hovers around 16.5 at the beginning of Chapter 1. It’s up to almost 18 by Chapter 16. At Chapter 24 it is 18.7 and finally within the ‘normal’ weight range! After Chapter 36 it’s around 18.5. Tends to eat much more regardless of appetite when with friends, but will skip meals without Grim or someone to remind her to eat. Ruggie, Jade, and Jamil usually stop her from trying to give too much of her lunch to Grim when they’re present.

Circadian Rhythm

Night owl. Usual sleeping time is 2 AM or later. Also called “lack of self-control” (x2). Thanks to Jack it has been slightly improved (Chapter 17, 18 etc.). Jamil seems to be trying to do the same thing (Chapter 36).

Personal Pronouns

Usually uses 自分 (jibun, genderless ‘myself’), like the in-game character. Sometimes ‘slips’ and uses 私 (watashi, feminine/polite ‘I’) especially when she has a strong opinion about something. Tends to speak respectfully to professors and upperclassmen (using polite speech, 尊敬語 and 謙譲語). Loses the politeness around her friends of the same age.

Year & Class

Year 1 | Class A | Seat 41

Yuu technically doesn’t have a seat since she’s not a full student, but sharing a seat with Grim became very inconvenient to the instructors once they realized that her grades differed greatly from his. By the way, it was Ashton Vargas who proposed the idea of giving her Seat 41 temporarily.

I II. A MORE DETAILED LOOK AT MY STORY’S YUU

Yuu Trivia! |

  • Yuu’s mother language is (British) English, but around age 10, she started studying Japanese. By the time she was fourteen, she was fluent enough to be selected for a brief transfer study at Mahoutokoro, Hogwarts’ counterpart magic school in Japan. (See Chapter 14)
  • Yuu learned English mostly through television, online resources and books. Therefore, she possesses little of County Durham’s accent, though she can understand it well enough.
  • The language being spoken within this story is actually mainly Japanese (which is why the author had the foolish desire to write the story in Japanese at first). Even though the premise is a non-Japanese speaking one as mentioned in the novel, the game is still very Japanese in behaviour. Readers can probably tell by the definitions on each chapter. Being half-Japanese and a highly versatile Ravenclaw, Yuu has no particular problem adapting to the language change. The author’s 2 years of formal Japanese study, unfortunately, did not produce the same amount of writing skill with the language… (Being certified as a ‘native speaker’ doesn’t make one automatically good at writing Japanese literature! Who would have thought?!)
  • Yuu’s alignment is True Neutral. She was almost Neutral Good (by 3 points). By the way, her least matched alignment is Chaotic Evil!
  • Yuu is a cat person more than a dog person… But she’s mostly a dragon person. In fact she liked dragons so much from the moment she saw one that she begged dragon tamer Charlie Weasley for half a year before he finally conceded a short internship abroad with her.
  • Yuu tends to care about appreciating art, such as beauty, visual art, music, and food. While she never makes a point of it other than in a joking manner, she is actually very detailed about her preferences. Ace has muttered that she would fit right in at Pomefiore.
  • To Yuu, Grim is the most important and precious existence in the world. This is both a good thing… And a not-so-good one.

Yuu’s Personality & Current Standing |

  • Appointed by Dire Crowley as the Directing Student and paired with Grim as his partner. One of two living residents of the Ramshackle Dorm. A Ravenclaw that is especially fond of magical creatures and playing with Charms, Yuu seeks knowledge and learning above all else but is slow to notice social situations and things that seem obvious at first glance, caring little about trends and worldly possessions.
  • Yuu’s default behaviour is squirrelling away to do what she loves: find new information. She has done this since before arriving at Hogwarts, but sometimes would abandon her classes to hide in the Dungeons at Hogwarts. While she also tries to do this at NRC, it doesn’t work out for long. A consequence of this is Yuu hiding herself from everything and everyone else, too. Unfortunately (?), this no longer works out the longer she is at NRC.
  • On one hand, she is extremely clever and learns new material quickly regardless of subject; on the other, she is not physically strong and is one step short of being labelled ‘clumsy’. Particularly hates flying on a broom and is not fond of heights, especially after being hung from the Astronomy Tower in her third year in a spiteful act of bullying. It took several hours for a professor to retrieve her, but the memory of the incident (and others) remained.
  • Yuu has a strong memory and a strong mind like many other Ravenclaws; therefore, dislikes spells dealing with memory (Confundus Charm, Memory Charm) and prefers to never use them.
  • Yuu possesses a love for the arts regardless of medium and displays attention to detail in areas such as the culinary arts, visual arts, music, clothing and beauty, although she seems to consider herself a lost cause in the last category. Has always wanted to pursue music, but due to cost and time prohibitions, was never able to truly invest in this interest. Yuu enjoys viewing and appreciating art more than producing it herself; this has helped to develop her specialty in observation of people, things, etc.
  • Yuu has developed an aversion to great crowds and attention, especially attention directed her way. Over her semester at NRC, she seems to have gained some resistance towards this aversion, though still prefers quiet environments/open environments to crowds. She shares this preference with Azul, Idia, Leona, quite a few others, but to a greater extent.
  • In line with this preference, Yuu also prefers to blend in and conform to societal rules so long as she is not provoked. Possesses little personal ambition, but values the goals she has highly. If there is a goal she is aiming for, Yuu can and will choose unsavoury means to accomplish objectives if necessary. During the story, this goal often coincides with the lives of people she cares greatly about, so Yuu tends to go to great lengths to accomplish them, regardless of personal sacrifice. Therefore, she seems to be able to ‘ignore’ even her fear of heights in some situations (like Overblot fights).
  • Yuu is extremely cautious and secretive even without considering the International Statute of Secrecy. Has a great many things she does not disclose regardless of how important it is—Yuu simply does not feel the necessity to say it and as mentioned above, defaults to “hiding” something (or herself). However, when asked (especially by her friends) she has become more willing to tell them information about herself, no matter how mysterious she finds their attention. Still, this is very difficult for her, as shown when her gender is revealed to Grim, and even sends her into a small panic attack.
  • Yuu seems to not understand the full definition and extent of “trust” in relationships, pointed out both by Azul and Jamil. This may be linked to her past having little interpersonal experiences or positive relationships; it may also have to do with being an only child who is used to doing things by themselves with full control over many aspects of her life. While Yuu is working on trusting others more and better, she still seems to draw a line between herself and others, regardless of how vague it is.
  • Although she can be described as relatively ‘positive’ or ‘optimistic’, Yuu has a surprisingly cold or realistically analytical view of the world. She can make decisions, especially ones that harm herself, without a second thought as long as they cause the greatest ‘benefit’ according to her logic.
  • Additionally, when Yuu is in danger—physical or otherwise—she tends to ignore any options of “avoiding” the danger in favour of “going down while gaining a benefit along the way”. Trivia: In Chapter 4, this is what defuses Leona during their first hostile meeting. A Pyrrhic victory.
  • Yuu will not cause harm to others out of her own volition largely because she believes it is inefficient and illogical; she recognizes the value and respect of human life but also human folly and mistakes equally. If someone breaks (to her) a rule, she believes they should suffer the consequences. But if the culprits are her friends, Yuu will try to find a substitute for their punishment (Chapters 19 to 24).
  • Yuu’s unhesitating thought patterns ostracized her at Hogwarts, especially when she was young (11 to 13 years old). However, where she could have made the best out of a bad social situation, Yuu’s own decisions completely cut her off from any chance of a peaceful school life.
  • It seems that even before considering her behaviour, Yuu was perceived rather negatively during her time at Hogwarts, singled out by some students who disliked her due to her “last name” which no longer exists. Yuu also avoids talking about her last name. Whether due to this or to her behaviour, Headmistress McGonagall has had numerous conversations with Yuu in the Headmaster’s Office over her four years of schooling (Chapter 36). According to McGonagall, it was to “prevent” something unsavoury from happening.
  • Perhaps due to the negative atmosphere surrounding her, Yuu made “friends” with only a few students superficially and spend much of her time in the Dungeons or hidden away in the Library. She has had more conversations with portraits, including one of Professor Snape, than with people. She also seems to prefer strict and sharp professors like Alastor Moody.
  • According to Yuu, her behaviour and personality were very “different” than it is now when she was in Hogwarts. The reason for this remains to be seen, but is evident in her behaviour towards her possessions from Hogwarts (Chapter 36).
  • Yuu has mentioned several times that she believed she lacks several critical ‘emotions’ that prevent her from fitting in anywhere, including at Hogwarts. Her behaviour before arriving at NRC is unknown, but it may be safe to say that it differed greatly from her current state in the story. While Yuu might have the wrong idea about this, leading to these statements being denied/corrected (Trey) and largely ignored (everyone else), she might be telling the truth more clearly than others know, as Jamil begins to guess in Chapter 36. The reason behind Yuu’s behaviour in the past is unknown.
  • Throughout the story, Yuu encounters several new emotions for the first time and revises the hypothesis of her “missing” a critical chunk of her emotions.
  • [More to be added here later.]

Yuu’s Past |

  • Yuu lived as a Muggle without knowledge of magic until she received her Hogwarts letter. Halfway through her first year at the institution, she was told through owl post of her heritage as a half-blood with a Pureblood father. First spoke to this father at seven. Last spoke to him at twelve.
  • Due to her mother’s early determination to ignore Yuu’s presence and the nurse-maid’s unfriendly regard, Yuu has not had any close positive relationships with females (Chapter 14). She seems to have little immunity against being treated ‘well’ by anyone, and positive attention is about the only thing that can fluster her.
  • Trivia: Yuu consequently has a small and almost unconscious desire to make a female friend, resulting in her comments about Riddle’s mother (Chapter 26) and other girls like Rosalia the portrait (Chapter 3).
  • Although tough enough to survive her youngest years alone with completely absent and uninterested parents, consequently, she does not understand how to form and maintain relationships, nor is aware of how those around her regard her. Yuu seems to have a set-in-stone image of herself and is quite confused when it is challenged by outside parties.
  • Yuu’s curiosity has always been her driving force and most likely made sure she stayed alive before making it to Hogwarts. A self-learner by necessity. Eager and reckless in her pursuit of new skills and knowledge, which has led to narrowly avoided incidents (barely saved by accidental magic more times than she knows). Hogwarts only lent this curiosity wings, propelling her love of magic and curiosity to new heights. Although like many Ravenclaws, she tries to maintain good grades, Yuu’s first priority has always been her interests. Because she does not take offence at snubs and relentlessly chases knowledge, she has been able to converse with unfriendly entities such as Severus Snape’s hidden portrait and open a rather vicious book in the Hogwarts library.
  • Yuu has been to Japan twice. Once in the summer when her mother was on a business trip (and also visited her family), in which Yuu was left behind on Nagoya’s streets and consequently stayed with her maternal grandmother for several months. Once more in the second half of Fourth Year as an exchange student to Mahoutokoro. It was at Mahoutokoro that she changed her hair to hide her eyes (and chopped it shorter). It seems that she was also involved with the Quidditch team somehow…
  • Yuu seems to have encountered bullying both at Hogwarts and at Mahoutokoro (the latter being more vicious). Even before turning eleven, she had experienced the same treatment at her primary school in muggle England. While she does not enjoy this treatment, Yuu has never particularly been affected by it and takes it as something “natural” because she understands that she is “not normal”.
  • Yuu has magically “struck” her last name by going to the Ministry of Magic and removing it. She says this is to prevent tracking by magical creatures across the areas she visited on internship with Charlie Weasley.
  • [Much more to be added here later.]

Yuu in the Twisted Wonderland |

  • Since her arrival in Twisted Wonderland, Yuu has gained a desire for contact with almost anyone, though she limits it to people that don’t mind. Whether this has to do with her mental state, desire for companionship, or simply is her way of expressing affection is unknown.
  • Yuu is grateful for Grim as her partner, as he is clear about his emotions and actions. As Yuu is someone who is not very socially skilled nor used to conversing with others, this new environment suddenly forces her to improve this skill. In this regard, Grim is easy to understand for her, and the “animal”-like part definitely helps with her ease of mind. Thanks to Grim’s straightforwardness, he quickly becomes her favourite person in the world and her irreplaceable partner she cares for.
  • According to Dire Crowley, Yuu has an almost terrifyingly strong natural 'beast taming’ ability that works on anyone without discrimination. Extremely difficult to make enemies with. Yuu doesn’t really understand or believe this statement due to experiences at Hogwarts and in her primary school, and instead thinks he is talking about actual animals and Grim.
  • In Hogwarts, Yuu was certainly adept at handling magical creatures in and out of classes. However, it is unknown if she attracts non-magical creatures as well. In the Twisted Wonderland, it seems as if fish within the Coral Sea are unusually friendly towards her. This is also demonstrated with the elephant (and others) from Scarabia, who Yuu interacts with gleefully.
  • Due to a great interest in the Twisted Wonderland’s world and magic, she unconsciously holds a high opinion of all of its residents (especially hardworking and diligent students), and actively engages with them far more easily than she did in her world/Hogwarts. However, being charismatic in a school like NRC is not only dangerous to her, but also dangerous to the students. It is not necessarily a good thing for other people to like her too much, let alone Villains who don’t pretend to respect personal space.
  • Yuu’s magic seems to be changing as time goes on. While the impetus for this is unknown, the changes became truly evident while creating a contract with Azul in Chapters 19~25. Her magic’s momentum of change has increased dramatically after she recovers from a cold that nearly killed her, and sometimes “impossible” things seem to happen, like summoning objects from her world without her intention.
  • Yuu also has a particularly mysterious relationship with mirrors, seeing clouds and Mickey Mouses dimly through the one in Ramshackle Dorm. Recently she has also seen other images of her world through mirrors in Scarabia, with disastrous consequences (Chapter 31).
  • While Yuu seems to have an excellent memory, recent events have been challenging that assumption...
  • She seems to be slowly changing as her time lengthens in this world (or quickly, depending on your definition). Whether it is in the right direction remains to be seen, but Yuu is growing with all her might.
