Sandbox

Summary:

Inspired by Sea of sands by Nasri.

What if Anders came back for Mitchell?

Notes:

I wrote this for the gathingfiki fic of a fic event. I recently re-read Nasri’s story ‘Sea of sands’. The story is beautifully written and I encourage you to read it before reading this. It is an amazing story with the perfect amount of snark, angst and fluff.

Spoilers ahead!

Sea of sands ends with Mitchell and Anders being apart. There is no reference to them meeting again in the future. It was the perfect ending to that story, which is why I’m kind of uncertain to post this short sequel. But I did anyway, with permission from Nasri of course :)

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Anders had been away for eight months. Mitchell had spent those months doing Herrick’s bidding, living on the edge of society and trying to keep his body count to a minimum.

Bristol did not have the appeal it once had. The new vampires got on his nerves and Herrick’s plans kept getting more and more idiotic. These were some of the many reasons he used to justify his more than regular trips to London. Herrick noticed, of course he did, but had only mentioned it once.

“Pining is a bad look on you.”

Mitchell did not care what Herrick thought. Not anymore. And so he kept visiting London, never expecting but always hoping.

-

Mitchell heard him before he saw him. Anders’ voice carried all the way from the other side of the pub. He was flirting and telling stories, no different than usual, and yet… His shoulders were less tense, his posture was relaxed, his audience seemed genuinely interested instead of entranced.

Mitchell could only move forward.

“Did you do it?” Mitchell asked in lieu of a greeting.

“Did I do what?” Anders responded, his hand reaching for Mitchell’s.

“Save the world.”

“I’m here, aren’t I?”

He was.

-

Anders called out his name.

Their clothes ended up on the floor of Mitchell’s bedroom. It was only the second time they made love, yet it felt like coming home.

Mitchell dragged a blanket over them both when they were spent.

“How’s the other guy.” Mitchell asked.

“He left.”

Mitchell was silent, waiting for Anders’ question he knew was coming.

“Do you mind? That it’s just me now?”

“It was always just you.”

-

Mitchell’s stomach twisted when Anders rose from the bed the next morning.

“You’re leaving?” Mitchell asked the question he had been too afraid to ask last time.

“I never planned to stay long. I’ve rebuilt my business back home.”

Mitchell was surprised when Anders took his hand.

“I was only here to pick you up.” Anders clarified.

“Where are we going?”

“Back to mine.”

“You sold your place when you left.”

“I sold my apartment in London, not the one in Auckland.”

“You want me to come with you to New Zealand?”

“Can’t let the best lay I’ve ever had get away.” Anders reasoned.

“But the weather is shit for vampires and your brothers seem awful.” Mitchell grinned.

“Is that a no?”

Mitchell shook his head. “When do we leave?”

Thank you for reading.
Please give some love to Nasri, who wrote the original fic this was inspired by!
