Work Text:

"Anne? are you up?"

Marcy's finger levitated above the "send" button. So close yet so far. They did this almost every day now for the last few months, they felt like a burden after a while. They needed comfort and Anne was their only friend---or at least their only friend that could comfort them. Even though Anne had told them they could text her anytime they needed, Marcy couldn't help but feel like they were annoying from the consistency (and the time).

Ever since Marcy was outed to their parents because they found their social media account, their parents fought every night. Their father was supportive (or at least working on it...) Their mother on the other hand, not so much. It was more because she didn't understand. All her life she knew a little girl, so finding out her "little girl" was just her "little kid" was hard for her.

It wasn't Marcy's fault, they knew that deep down, but the other side of their brain kept blaming themselves. They'd be a loving family if Marcy was just normal.

Marcy sighed, and as they were about to delete their message they impulsively pressed send. "Shit!" they muttered quietly to themselves.

"I'm sorry Anne ignore that."

But just as Marcy begged Anne hadn't woken up, it looked like she was because her bubbles were moving on the screen.

"No, it's okay Mar, what's up?"

"I'm sorry Anne, please go back to sleep it's 3 am."

"I was already up it's okay."

"Anne me and you both know that's a lie."

"Mar, please tell me what's going on."

Marcy sighed in defeat as they knew Anne was a tough case. She never gave up, and that was something Marcy admired.

"They're fighting again... I just can't help but think it's all my fault. They'd still be happy."

Marcy slowly let out tears, quietly sniffling into their sleeve.

"Marcy... It's not you're fault for being who you are if they can't accept that then that's their fault."

They sighed.

"I know I just wish they understood."

"It might take a while, some people just need time. Maybe one day they'll see you and love you for who you are, but if they never do just know that I do."

Marcy blushed, their face turning a small shade of pink, small tears falling down their cheeks.

"Thanks, Anna banana."

"Of course Mar-Mar."

Oh, the love for this girl the little 13-year-old 'Mar-Mar' had was true. They were head-over-heels for sure, they might be young but they've found the one they want to spend their life with.

"Hey, Mar you still up, right?"

"Yeah what's up?"

"I can't sleep."

"Oh, I'm sorry Anne I didn't mean to wake you :(."

Stupid stupid stupid stupid stupid-

"No, I was serious before, I don't know what it is but I just couldn't sleep. Do you think I could stay at your house for the night? My parents are leaving early tomorrow so they won't notice I'm gone."

Marcy's face heated as soon as they read the message and their overthinking came to an end.

"Oh! Yeah sure, just knock my window like you used to."

Marcy threw their phone down on the bed, throwing themselves down on the pillow as they tried to hold in their stimming. "Oh my God oh my God oh my God!" Marcy couldn't help but let out the whisper as well as flap their hands up and down. Marcy missed the sleepovers Anne and Marcy had. After they came back to earth, Anne had been scared of sleepovers (understandingly so).

Marcy heard a faint knock on their window and went to open it. Marcy laughed a bit seeing Anne filled with leaves in her hair from the tree.

Marcy was all of a sudden all Anne could see as they laughed. it's been a few weeks since Anne had saw Marcy so happy. "hey Anne, come in here you have leafs all over your hair!" Marcy whisper-yelled giggling as they helped pull Anne into the room.

"hey Mar. it's been awhile, huh?" Anne giggled a little along as she flopped herself onto their bed. "yeah, remember you used to do this all the time." Marcy laughed falling on to the bed with Anne. "i'm surprised you never got caught."

"yeah, i'm sorry about that."

"about what?"

"not being with you for so long."

Marcy frowned. "aww don't worry about it Anne, i know it was tough but i can definitely see that you're improving and you're working on your fear. i'm proud of you!" Marcy smiled weakly. "sure i missed you these past few months of not having our little sleepovers but you have every right to be a little nervous about them. i only want you to come here if you feel comfortable to, not because you feel like you need to. okay?" Marcy turned their head towards Anne who looked back.

their faces were close and Anne could feel the warm feeling that radiated from Marcy. "thanks Mar." Anne smiled. "but i do want to come, i also miss our sleepovers." 'and when you'd accidentally cuddle me in the middle of the night... it's cute.'

"well that's good to hear." Marcy grinned. "i know we usually stay up a few hours but i'm really tired.." Anne yawned. "yeah of course! me too! we can hang out in the morning before you have to leave." Marcy sighed with a content smile, shifting to their side. "good night Mar."

"good night Anne." they yawned before letting sleep take over them.

their parents voice got a little louder.

and louder.

until it eventually woke Marcy up. Marcy looked towards Anne to see if they were still asleep and they sighed of relief when they were.

"why can't you just try to understand her!"

"because she's too young to know these things! she doesn't know what she's talking about!"

"she doesn't know what she's talking about."

"she doesn't know what she's talking about."

what if she's right what if i'm just faking it. what if it's all for attention.

Marcy didn't even realize that they started to sob uncontrollably. hiccuping and scrunched up into a ball. "i'm just faking it. i'm just faking it." their mind made them repeat. "i'm just faking it. i'm just faking it."

Marcy felt a comforting embrace around their hip. "don't listen to them Marcy." Anne mumbled tiredly. "she's wrong."

"she said she was born that way!"

"She's still young! she doesn't know what she wants!"

"Marcy.. don't listen to her. you know who you are, and i admire you for that. you're so brave, i know you are, i want you to be brave for me right now, okay?" Anne's hand moved up to their shoulder to grip tighter and pulled herself closer to Marcy. her other hand playing with the top of Marcy's hair to calm them down. "i love your Mar-Mar." Anne whispered softly. Marcys breathing became slower and slower. "i- i- eh- me- i-" Marcy tried to speak but they couldn't their mind didn't let them. "you don't have to speak it's okay, just hold on." Anne slowly got up but kept her one arm around Marcy. she sat up, pulling her phone out her pocket and going onto her notes. Anne handed the phone to Marcy.

"they're alwayss gonna c me as a girl"

Anne's heart almost broke reading Marcy's message. "you're not a girl Marcy, you never were. if they don't see that then... then they're just wrong. you know what's right and at the end of the day that's all that matters." Anne slowly curled Marcy's short hair with her finger. Marcys breathing slowed more, their eyes slowly closing, turning their head to look up at Anne.

"i love you Mar. don't you ever forget that. i love you so much." Anne repeated, shifting back into a laying position and shoving her face into Marcy's neck comfortably. "l-love you too An-Anne." Marcy let out shakingly. Anne took the phone from Marcy, putting it in the dresser to deal with tomorrow. "i'm so proud of you." Anne whispered. Marcys mouth wouldn't let her speak again but they responded by turning to their side and wrapping their arm around her.

"you're very brave Marcy, i want you to remember that whenever things get tough. you're brave, let people know that." Marcy lifted their hand up to Anne's hair and played with it. coming it with their fingers. "you're warm." Marcy mumbled after a few moments, their heart beat was back to normal. the faint yelling from their parents was still in the background, but it seemed to have grown to be lower as they were the only ones in the room.

Anne giggled a little. "you are too." Anne bopped Marcy's nose making them flinch before giggling along. Anne sighed with a content smile. "i really did miss this...cuddling with you." Anne mumbled with a blush. "i used to look forward to it every weekend to see if you'd text me." Marcy laughed a little. "really? i keep my phone ringer on to see if you ever text me in the middle of the night." Marcy blushed. "i do the same thing too."

should i tell them? is it even the right time right now?
Anne contemplated in her head.
aww but look at them right now their so cute. i just wanna kiss them- AHH NO! not right now!

Annes face blew up red and now all she could think about was how cute Marcy was. Marcy moved closer to Anne. "i know i told you before but but i just really love you." Anne's heart exploded.

AWWW oh my god! that was so cute!!

"i love you too Mar. a lot more then you know." Anne closed her eyes but she felt the vibration of Marcy laughing. "oh yeah? how much?" Anne laughed. "Thisssssss much!" Anne giggled moving her arm as far back as she could. "well i love you ten times more then that."

"nope i love you more, my little nerd arms are just too short." Anne laughed hugging Marcy back. "you're too cute." Marcy whispered before blowing up a shade of red. "i-i mean-" they laughed awkwardly. "i think you're cute too." Anne smiled, lifting her arm to pull some hair out of Marcys face.

now, do it now.
Annes voice told her.

no, not now it's terrible timing!

but look how cute they are!!

"Marcy i like you." it eventually fell out of her mouth. "like um... like like. a lot." Anne said looking off to the side. "i like like you too."  Marcy softly giggled. "you're very cute and amazing and accepting and ahh you're just so cute." Anne smiled as she watched Marcy gush about her. "you're braveness is what made me fall head over heals. god and when you rant to me about your hyper-fixations with that big smile..."

"i thought i was annoying when i did that?" Marcy laughed sheepishly. "no! of course not! i love when you rant to me! you're adorable! even though most of the time you're speaking another language to me." Anne laughed.

they cuddled in silence for a moment before Anne spoke again. "thanks for letting me stay."

Marcy smiled. "thanks for cheering me up." and finally, after a long night, both thirteen year olds fell fast asleep in each others arms.
