Or: they make out for basically 800 words.

Notes:

I wrote this in January, at the height of my Hades obsession. I just found it finished the other day and thought to polish and post it. may or may not be my only Hades fic.

Work Text:

Thanatos teleported in with his customary green light and death knell, and increasingly customary little smile. "It's good to be working with you in a more official capacity, Zag. Shall we get started?"

It was over practically before it began, and the wretched shades of Tartarus never knew what hit them. Zagreus beat him handily, with the numerous weak Numskulls quickly beefing up his kill count, while leaving the tougher armored thugs to Than, who killed them in one fell swoop. The boon from Ares appeared at Zag's feet, but he ignored it in favor of chasing after Thanatos.

"We make a good team, you and I," Thanatos remarked, holding out a softly pulsing Centaur Heart. Zagreus took it and held it against his own heart, and sighed a bit as he felt the magic making him just a bit tougher as it was absorbed by his body. Thanatos nodded and stepped away from Zagreus, preparing to teleport back to whatever he was doing. Zagreus' hand shot out and grabbed his arm.

"Now, come on, Than. Just because we're officially coworkers doesn't mean you can leave without giving me a customary kiss for good luck," the prince pouted.

Death huffed, knowing full well he could leave and Zag wouldn't be able to do anything about it, but finding he couldn't deny him anything anyway. "Fine," Thanatos replied in overdramatic acquiescence, and privately delighted in the joy in Zagreus' responding grin.

Thanatos alighted on the frankly disgusting floor of Tartarus, and had barely a second to wonder what exactly he had just stepped in when Zagreus was upon him. The kiss was their usual, customary and chaste, until Zagreus smiled against his lips and went for a second, and then a third, going deeper and lingering longer each time. Thanatos heard a rumble that he realized belatedly was coming from his own throat; it really had been a while, hadn't it. One of Zag's hands came up to cradle the back of his head as Thanatos was gently but purposefully pushed against a wall, his other hand drifting slowly down his side. Thanatos wrapped his arms around his lover's waist, and all thoughts of where they were and what they were supposed to be doing fled his mind. Even the calls from mortals waiting to be reaped - a near constant murmur in the back of his mind - quieted, or perhaps the roaring in his ears drowned them out.

Zagreus started trailing kisses along Than's jaw, while his hand started heading for the hem of his chiton. Zagreus placed a love bite behind his jaw, just above his gorget, and the unexpected shock was enough to open Than's eyes and take in his surroundings. Oh, right.

"Zag - Zagreus," he ground out, trying his damnedest not to moan it. He didn't quite succeed.

"Mmm?" Zag responded without stopping his work, which certainly wasn't the work he was supposed to be doing.

"Aren't you meant to be... ransacking your father's... domain?" Than asked, after taking an embarrassingly long time to string together words.

Zagreus hummed another affirmation, while he tenderly licked the sore spot, where a bruise would be if Thanatos could bleed, and his hand snaked under his chiton and plucked at the waistband of his trousers.

"Shouldn't you... continue doing that? People are expecting... you."

This was enough for Zagreus to pull back a bit and murmur, "My unpredictability is my greatest asset, according to Father. Have to keep them on their toes..."

The problem was, Thanatos didn't want to stop, but the clamoring of souls had grown louder, and he didn't think they should continue these activities here, of all places. He sighed. "I have to go, Zag."

Zagreus pulled away with a pout, but at least he wasn't torturing his strained resolve with his ministrations anymore.

"Besides, the Olympians are not terribly patient," Thanatos adds, gesturing at the boon, which had begun glowing brighter and vibrating in place.

The prince huffed without looking. "Fine," he conceded. "Continue this at the House?" he asked, along with his best sultry look.

(He had perhaps been practicing said look in the mirror rather often as of late.)

"Y-yes," Death Incarnate squeaked, and was gone in a flash, causing Zagreus to stumble slightly into the wall. He chuckled as he collected himself. He honestly wasn't expecting to get that far. He dashed over to accept the boon, unable to repress his grin.

"Ah, there you are, my kin. I was starting to suspect you had fallen in battle!"

Zagreus smiled and said nothing, and was about to select his boon when Ares spoke again, sounding distracted.

"Oh, Thanatos! My, you're looking rather disheveled..."

Zag quickly picked one without thinking and burst into laughter as soon as the connection closed.
