Work Text:
“Fluffy,” “Squishy,” “Soft,” All words that someone with restraint might use to describe him. Kokichi wasn’t about to sugarcoat it though, he was really becoming a total fatass!
Ever since he was a kid, Kokichi has always been on the chubby side. He actually finds it useful sometimes, as it kind of fits the “innocent kid” act that he likes to play.
Recently though, he’s gained around 5 pounds, all in the span of a little over a month. Whether it be the fact that he’s been locked up with 15 other teenagers and the stress eating that comes with that…or the fact that there seems to be an endless supply of sweets…or the fact that there aren’t any cops to run from— Maybe there’s more than one reason that he’s been putting on weight, but he isn’t exactly pleased about it.
Kokichi probably wouldn’t have minded very much under any normal circumstances, but these aren’t normal circumstances. Not at all. Aside from all of the things that are out of the ordinary right now, Kokichi actually has someone that he wants to impress: Shuichi Saihara, the ultimate detective.
He’s just so smart, and good at what he does, and adorably awkward, and sweet, and he’s better at seeing through Kokichi’s lies than anyone he’s ever met before. He’s perfect. To say that Ouma was crushing would be a complete understatement, but the issue is, he doesn’t have a chance with the detective.
Shuichi is…hot. He has a pretty face, and his body is surprisingly toned. He could date anyone he wanted to, there’s just no way he would willingly date some pudgy twink.
This makes one thing very clear to Kokichi. He has to lose some weight. At least the 5 pounds he gained while he was here. He isn’t one for structured workout sessions, but maybe he could run or…something. Once he’s lost the weight, then he can ask the detective out.
Yeah, that could work. He decides, taking a sip of grape soda before immediately spitting it out. He also needs to quit drinking that stuff. Like, as soon as possible.
“Mooooommmm,” Kokichi whines at Kirumi. “I only need a small breakfast this morning, I have some very serious hijinks to attend to today. You can just leave the plate by my door.”
“Very well,” Kirumi says, nodding.
With that, Kokichi practically skips back to his room and plops back down on his bed.
His diet is going to go completely unnoticed. He’ll eat in his room for most meals, so no one will question the visibly smaller portions of food, and as a maid, Kirumi won’t say anything about his eating habits. It’s perfect. Kokichi can’t help but grin as he mentally goes over his plan.
Knock knock.
“Your breakfast is here, I’ve left it outside your room,” The maid calls. Kokichi listens for her footsteps so he can go out and grab his meal. He probably looks like a little gremlin, swiftly opening the door, grabbing the food, and slamming the door shut again.
He looks down at his breakfast. It looks like Kirumi has prepared a few peach slices and a cup of yogurt.
In a matter of a few minutes, the peaches along with the yogurt are all gone.
Ouma knows that he specifically asked for a small breakfast, but that meal really left something to be desired. Oh well…sacrifices must be made when on a diet, probably. He sets the empty plate aside.
What else does he have to do? If he’s going to lose weight he’d better exercise, right?
…
At this point, Kokichi is starting to realize that he’s never actually tried to lose weight before. He doesn’t know what kind of exercises to do or if he just ate the right foods. He doesn’t know anything. He can’t ask anyone either. He’s not about to actually be honest and tell people that he wants to look attractive for his little boy crush. He doesn’t want to sound pathetic.
Maybe he is pathetic. He feels pathetic. He’s just gross and stupid and—
Overthinking. Kokichi is not about to wallow in his unhappiness.
He slowly picks himself up off of his bedroom floor, and leaves the room. Maybe he could steal something or taunt someone, and they would chase him or something. It’s certainly worth a shot…
“It’s been 1 week, where the hell are my abs?” Kokichi asks himself while stepping off of his scale. He hasn’t even dropped a single pound since he started. He doesn’t know what he’s doing wrong. He’s been eating smaller meals and being more active.
Granted, he has snuck in a cheat meal once…or twice…or maybe a few times, but that shouldn’t have thrown him off that much.
He runs his hands under his shirt and squeezes his soft tummy, which to his dismay hasn’t shrunken even a bit since he’s started his diet.
How will Shuichi ever like me if I can’t even lose some weight? Kokichi thinks to himself, now trying to see how much of his belly he can fit in his hands. He’s been working hard-ish all week, why is he just as fat as when he started?
Saihara is probably developing feelings for one of his classmates while Kokichi struggles to not be a gross pig.
Maybe it would be best if he skipped dinner tonight.
Knock knock, knock knock.
“What is it, Kirumi?” He yells out, still poking his gut.
“It’s not Kirumi…” A voice replies.
Oh god. It’s…
He scurried over to open his door to a very nervous looking Shuichi.
“Ohhhhhh hi Shuichi. I thought those knocks sounded awkward, but now I know why!” He says, laughing.
“Um, Kokichi, actually I wanted to see if you would come eat dinner with me.” He says, ignoring the rude words.
“Oh is that so? Am I being asked out on a date by the ultimate detective? Sorry, but I’ll have you know that I only date blondes,” Kokichi giggles.
Shuichi’s eyes widen. “N-no, No Kokichi it’s not like that, I just wanted to see if you would eat with us,”
Shuichi wants to eat with him, he can’t turn him down…It’s Shuichi.
“Whatever! I guess it won’t hurt to eat with you, but you better not try anything with me!”
As Shuichi could’ve probably guessed, Kokichi teases him as they walk to dinner for “asking him out,” and the teasing gets even worse after Shuichi asks to sit together.
“Whatever you say, creep!” Kokichi says, sitting down next to him and messily serving himself a bowl of alfredo pasta.
For the rest of dinner, Kokichi engages in all of the typical bratty stuff he gets into. Name calling, mess making, butting heads with Miu, and it seems to be distracting everyone from the fact that he isn’t eating much.
The meal goes by relatively quickly. Korekiyo and Rantaro are the first to leave. And then Angie, and then Gonta, and then Tsumugi, and so on until Kirumi leaves, leaving Kokichi and Shuichi alone.
They get up and begin walking back to the dorms until Shuichi stops in his tracks.
“Hey, um, Kokichi are you alright?” Shuichi asks.
Kokichi’s heart skips a beat. “Why? Because I was asked on a date on such short notice? I’m pretty offended, but I’ll get over it!” Kokichi replies, twirling his hair.
“No, well, I was just worried because you barely ate your dinner tonight an–“
“Ohhhh that?” Ouma cuts in. “I just wasn’t very hungry.” He examines his nails as if they’re far more interesting than the conversation he’s having with Shuichi, even though his palms are sweating and he can feel his heart in his chest.
Saihara pauses. “…Um, Kokichi?”
“What?”
Shuichi looks down at his shoes. “Kokichi, are you…Are you on a diet?”
Bastard.
“Hmm? Just because I wasn’t hungry tonight? That’s not very good detective work, Shuichi,” Ouma replies, still looking at his nails.
Shuichi sighs loudly. “N-no that’s not the only reason why I think that…”
Kokichi rolls his eyes. “Well then by all means, tell me the reasons, Saihara!”
“You’ve been eating in your room more lately...”
“I gave up on making friends here. Next reason!”
“Um, you’ve been running until you’re completely out of breath.”
“Yeah, and I’ll stop when you jerks quit chasing me. Duh.”
Shuichi’s eyes have yet to meet Kokichi’s gaze. He clears his throat. “If you’re not on a diet, uh, why did you have a scale out in your room…?”
Fuck.
“You’re so hooked on the thought of me losing weight. Is this your backhanded way of calling me fat, Shuichi?” Kokichi pouts.
Shuichi finally makes eye contact with him. “N-no that’s not what I mean… I just think that if I was right a-and you are trying to lose weight, you’re not going about it healthily,” Shuichi gulps when he sees Kokichi’s little face scrunch up. “And if you’re doing it because y-you’re worried about looks… I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the way you look.” Shuichi looks back down at the floor.
Ouma laughs. “Wow, I’m glad you think there’s nothing wrong with me!” He meant it to sound lighthearted, but his voice sounds betrayed.
“Ah, no… I meant, I mean I think you’re kind of…c-cute,” The detective replies, blushing profusely, still refusing to make eye contact with Kokichi. He takes a half step towards the short boy and wraps his arms around him. “See? Just like I thought, you’re… really nice to hold.”
Kokichi opens his mouth to speak a few times, but no words come out. He’s close enough to feel Shuichi’s warmth and hear his heartbeat, and it’s doing things to him. He feels his face heat up. “W-woah Shuichi I didn’t know you were a chubby chaser,” He says in a low voice.
Shuichi’s hand brushes against Kokichi’s neck. “You’re really mean to yourself. I like you,” He whispers into his ear.
Kokichi’s heart races. “O-okay mister detective, it sounds like you’re really into me and all, so w-what are you going to do about it?” He hates himself for stuttering so much, but he’s far more interested in what Saihara has to say next.
In response, Shuichi leans in, closing the small gap between them that for some reason feels way larger than it is, and presses his lips to Kokichi’s. At this point, Kokichi is sure that his face could be used to fry an egg, but Shuichi doesn’t say anything, and instead moves his hand to cup the blushing boy’s cheek.
He isn’t sure what it is about this kiss, but it makes him aware of all sorts of things. The way that Shuichi’s soft lips taste of artificial strawberry, (He remembers to make fun of him for that later,) how silky his hair really his when he runs his fingers through it, and finally how gentle he is with him.
Shuichi’s every gentle little movement goes to make Kokichi’s legs weaker and weaker.
The detective finally pulls away, his face now just as red as Kokichi’s.
”I’m so sorry if tha–“
“Sh-Shuichi! I thought you promised that you wouldn’t try anything with me,” Kokichi interrupts, going in for another kiss.
Maybe Shuichi isn’t so out of his league after all.
