Her eyes opened gradually, a deep breath escaping almost inaudibly. Despite the uncertainty and churning, she should feel, the brunette woman felt a foreign touch of serenity.
Instinctively, she touched, lightly, her abdomen only to become bemused by her changed appearance. She was no longer attiring in her well-known armor. Instead, her body was wrapped in a delicate material, fine white nylon sewing that replicated the famous greek design, toga. She wasn't wearing her typical bracelets, either.
She looked around in an attempt to recognize where is. In the distant horizon, valleys of different shapes and heights concealed a- a planet? In her almost three hundred or so years, she never felt the necessity to see one so closely. It was marvelous, breath-taking, and impossible to see Saturn, the planet she presumed it was, so nearby.
The sun is also up in the sky, and not a trace of clouds.
Even now, with the realization that she was alone, in the middle of an abandoned road, surrounded by endless fields, Diana wasn't feeling anything else than peacefulness.
She began to walk, leisurely, on the lonely pathway, taking as much of the quietness this place has to offer. Let it consume her, see with the soul, not the eyes. With each step forward, Diana could hear the quiet rustling of a close river. But not a single trance of other sounds.
As she continued to stroll, she moved her hand, caressing the tip of the reed with her fingers. A small smile began to form on her face as she let her hand touch the plants.
She couldn't put her finger on it, but this place made her felt enraptured by it. Different energies stirred something inside her heart, softening her completely, disarming all her doubts and fears.
Her walk faltered when she felt it - the soothing caress on her right forearm. Goosebumps erupted, on the line, the tender fingers trance as they were gently sliding up. Her breath shuddered as a warm body pressed gently against her from behind. Her lungs were making it impossible for her to breathe since they've hit by the aphrodisiac scent of vanilla. The princess tilted her head to the side, her heart beating faster as a shiver of trepidation run down her spine.
Diana closed her eyes, summoning all her strength to turn around. She was not ready to hope again. It's been so long, and yet, Diana doesn't feel ready. Her hope had been ripped out of her steel clasp when she just began to savor her. And since then, all Diana wanted, all the princess longed for, was to have it back. She wanted her back so badly.
And still, she felt unworthy to look at her.
The other person's lips stretched into a small, intimate smile as her fingers continued their caressing with the fondness of a devoted artist to its muse. Her cerulean eyes were burning with tremendous intensity, burning fires of enamored sparkles.
Diana opened her eyes carefully, afraid that once she did so, she would disappear again. Vanish from her life in a blink of an eye. Her hands moved mindlessly over her chest, her fingers drawing in anguish the memorized contour, where -
Transfixed by the heart she felt beating against her hand, Diana dragged her eyes up, drowning in the bluest of Kara's eyes. The blonde Kryptonian tilted her head, her heart clenching at the emotions that arose in the chocolate brown eyes.
Diana's first instinct was to flinch as Kara's fingers touched her cheek, but she was powerless in front of her. She always had been. Stripped out from her armor, Diana remained defenseless in front of the blonde woman who held her heart and took it away with her the night she -
She wasn't aware her tears streamed down her cheeks, too focused on taking as much of Kara's presence as she could. Kara's hand cupped her face, wiping the lonely tears with her thumb, and all Diana could do was basking in the warm touch, her heart unclenching.
She wasn't sure what kind of tears they were: happy or bitter, maybe both. Once again, Diana closed her eyes, daring to move closer, but not having the courage to watch as she did so. They rested their foreheads together, and Diana took the opportunity to calm her erratic heartbeat. The brunette woman moved her hands, placing them openly above the other woman's heart, feeling how the strong heart was pulsing, once again, life on her body.
"Diana," Kara's whispered word breaking the content silence between them. Her name's spoken so softly and reverently that it made Diana bit her lip to contain the sob rising in her throat.
"Kara," Whispered back the goddess, the words are strangled in her throat.
"Look at me, Diana,"
Diana shook her head against hers, refusing to open her eyes. She gripped the blonde's robes hard, afraid, in a desperate manner to keep her there.
A warm hand covered hers, offering a soothing touch of comfort, protection from the desolation that wouldn't have to come. That this was real, that Kara would not leave her. Not again.
Taking a deep breath, Diana confronted her reality. She had a lingering sadness in her eyes. A tearful smile formed on her face as Kara stroked gently, the hand she gripped with her robe but not removing it.
Diana's mind had been occupied countless times in the night by her presence. The ghost who haunted her dreams. Not her presence caused her fear; the brutal reality she has to endure when she woke up does. But this time, everything was purer. She could feel Kara close to her after so long. Her touch felt different, so different . The warmth of her body, her perfume, her whole presence was summoning memories Diana was holding on with dear life.
The grip on Kara's robes slowly loosened, but Diana's hands still trembled. Her brown eyes never let her go, looking at Kara with fear in her eyes. She craved to touch her face, to run her fingers through her curled-blonde mane and felt an intense urge to scratch her skin with her nails with enough force to make her hiss, only to made sure she was here.
"Diana, please," her name fell from her lips with the equal faith of a prayer. A promise, the unspoken: I'm here, I'm not leaving. "Open your eyes."
Her body shuttered as strong hands enclosed her, gently pulling her closer. It was as her body reacted on muscle memory. Diana's arms effortlessly found the way and wrapped themselves around the neck of the woman she has fallen in love with, Kara. Her sweet Kara.
There were no words, just two souls that searched desperately for the other and who finally found their way home. Deep down, Diana knew this was a dream. But it felt so... real. Because she could see the affection in Kara's eyes and the smile she gives her. For the way, she is moving toward her. For her loving hand that cup her face and keep her close. For the unspoken words between them. The connection between her and Kara, the heart that seems to beat faster than before. On the way, she closes her eyes and moves closer to Diana, but in the end, Diana meets her hallway because she can't wait any longer. Because of how her lips felt against hers.
There is fear. Fear of this being a dream with a sad ending. But there is also passion, sparkle that explodes between them when Diana felt Kara lean in for another kiss. Then another. Soft, gentle, unhurried. They breathed each other in with each pass of their lips.
"You are real," Whispered Diana as they broke apart, her words strangled her throat and her hands caressing Kara's cheek with such tremor...
There were tracks of tears where Diana's thumb stroked her cheeks.
"I waited for this for so long, Diana... To feel you close to me, again."
Sadness and disbelief were lingering in her eyes as she asked. "Am I dreaming?"
"If this is a dream, I no longer wish to wake up."
Kara's hands were warm as they stroked her bare arms, and Diana found the touch soothing and exciting at the same time. She tucked her head against Kara’s shoulder and wrapped her arm around her waist. The Kryptonian began to move them slowly until their movement changed, and they were lazily swaying.
"I did promise you a dance."
Diana chuckled, aware of the way her heart blossomed and wildly beat in her chest.
Kara felt the subtle press of Diana’s fingertips at the base of her spine urging her closer. She shifted her weight and their bodies touched along their length and Diana shuddered at the contact. She lowered her mouth to Diana's ear, “You feel so good in my arms.”
Diana had been following as Kara slowly moved them, but she had to stop when Kara pressed closer. She was yet to get used to the sensations skittering throughout her body that their closeness created.
Kara eased her hold on Diana and gently tipped her head back until their eyes met. “Is this still okay?”
Diana had to close her eyes against the physical sensations. Kara’s hands were wandering her back and arms making her skin tingle everywhere she touched and the way their bodies molded together left her short of breath as they kissed.
Diana pulled her mouth away. “Please tell me you’re feeling this, too,” she whispered hoarsely.
Kara’s thumbs rested under her jaw and Diana found herself staring into concerned eyes when Kara gently tipped her face up. “Open your eyes, Diana.” Kara smiled at her tenderly. “I do. I’m right here with you.”
As much as it had felt like one, she pleaded again not to be a dream.
In the safest place she knew, Diana let the tears fall. She cried for the joy she felt in Kara's loving embrace and for the pain caused by its same absence.
"Come back, Kara." Sobbed Diana, her voice cracking. "I need you."
"It's too early, my love."
Diana’s hands were balled up in Kara’s robe, fear squeezes the air from her lungs.
"No, it's not! I'm ready!" Diana asserted persistently. "Let me stay here with you. I need you! Please, Kara!
"Diana..."
"-No! You don't understand how hard it's for me to wake up every morning in an empty bed when all I ever felt in it was the warmth of your skin." Her face twisted as though she was struggling not to cry "You don't know how my heart clenched every time I walk alone in our home. How lonely I feel when I desperately clench into your pillow, searching for your presence! How many tears I cried when it stopped smelling like you! You are the only joy I ever asked for. Why I can't have you?
"I love you," whispered the blonde woman, her eyes misted over. She saw it. She saw how much Diana suffered. And all she could do in her peace was suffering with her. "I always been there, Diana. I never left you. I cried along with you those nights. Not once in my life, I felt more powerless than when I saw you, and my hands couldn't touch you."
"Then let me stay! Let us have, our, forever here!" Shouted Diana, bitter tears running down her cheeks. "I want to stay! I no longer have a purpose. I'm not the woman you once knew or the hero I was once. Everything changed that night. When you died- When you died, a part of me died with you. I'm a corpse wandering around humans without a path to follow, Kara." She took a shaken breath. "I wasn't ready to say goodbye..."
"I wish I could." She said brokenly. "I wish I could be more to you. I want to be more... but I can't, and I'm so so sorry."
"Would I see you again?" Diana's heart was clenching with dread.
Kara shakes her head, tears glittering in her eyes.
"Not for a very long time." Kara Zor-El reached out and framed Diana Prince's face in her hands. " I will wait for you as long as it takes, but you have to promise me something, Zhao. You have to move forward."
"No." Diana sobbed, her hands finding their way toward Kara's face.
"I would never love again,"
"I pray this is not true. Diana. You had been the sun in my life. You made me see light . But there, there is a big world waiting for you to light them too. Fight for them as I fought for you, love them as I love you, and the days you feel tired when the pain is too much to endure, remember that I'm sitting right next to you."
"I love you," Diana heard the blonde whispering before she felt the softest of Kara's lips touching hers tenderly.
Darkness gathered in her eyes and filled it. Her chest rises with a deep, desperate breath as she set up abruptly. Her hands clenched around the sheets, almost tearing them.
She gave a quick, anxious glance around her.
"Kara?"
She was in her room, their room. Her eyes stopped in her right, over the perfectly shaped, untouched pillow, the bitterness in her face faded to weary sadness.
Her eyes misted over, her face contorted, and she shook her head and wept, her shoulders shaking with grief and the intense desire to be embraced by warm arms and pressed gently against the heart that used to beat so strong.
