"Hey, Freddy, can you do me a favor?"
"Yeah?" He turned, looking up from his desk. He'd spent the last minute frantically stuffing notebooks and folders into his backpack. It now looked as if a tornado had passed over it, leaving action figures and old candy wrappers scattered across the desktop and floor.
Billy tossed the hoodie he had scooped up from the floor across the room. "Does this smell okay to you?"
Freddy's nose wrinkled. He hurriedly stepped back, the crumpled garment falling mere inches from the tips of his sneakers. He glared down at it. "Dude, no way!"
"Come on, it can't be that bad!"
"Then why didn't you just wear it?" He poked at it with the tip of his crutch.
"It's not radioactive waste!"
"I thought you told Rosa that you were gonna do your laundry last night."
Billy swallowed a groan. Though she set few rules, there was no wiggle room with what little Rosa did have. For all the times she'd given him a shoulder to lean on and a hand to hold, she'd made one point quite clear - he had to clean his own clothes.
"I got busy, okay? I didn't ask for that bank to get robbed."
Freddy smirked. "I didn't either, but you don't see me wearing the same clothes again."
"Hey, if you-"
"Guys!" Billy was far from shy, but his voice was easily cut off by the cry from below. Had Mary been any louder then the house's foundation would have started shaking. "If you don't get down here pronto then you'll have to walk to school by yourselves!"
"Coming!" Freddy grinned, tossing his backpack over his right shoulder. "You heard her."
Billy sighed, grabbing his hoodie. If anyone asked, he could always say he hadn't had time to shower after P.E.
