Chapter 1: umbrella girl, pointy ears

Chapter Text

The umbrella girl was there again today.

Amity had met her a little over two weeks ago, in one of the most bizarre encounters she'd ever experienced.

Basically, it went like this: Amity wasn't bothering to keep her angry cursing down as she forged ahead down the street, laden down with heavy shopping and fumbling with the handle of her umbrella as the rain tipped down.

"Motherfucker!" She'd snarled as the umbrella flipped inside out in the wind and tried to escape. Several passers-by gave her odd looks.

All but one.

Rather than rainy pavement, her vision was suddenly filled with the brightest purple raincoat she'd ever set eyes on and concerned brown eyes. Tanned skin with rosy glowing cheeks. Rain droplets sliding down a cute button nose as the girl's mouth moved up and down, Amity's gaze focusing on pink lips....

Oh, fuck.

"- you okay? You're totally zoned out right now!" The girl suddenly chuckled over the sound of rain slamming against the pavement, a bright peal of laughter that seemed to warm the world up a little.

She was standing VERY close.

Amity managed to shake herself out of her gay disaster. "Oh, god, sorry- yeah..."

"No worries, amiga! You have very pointy ears, by the way!" The girl exclaimed cheerfully, and Amity became aware of warm, brown hands helping her with her shopping as she tried to control her misbehaving umbrella. Peeking out from under her purple hood were a few *very distracting* stray brown curls.

pointy ears?

"It's an issue I'm very familiar with. Always got my head in the clouds! Or down so many rabbitholes its a wonder i manage to pass my classes..."

Her voice was so...bright. Sort of low and rough and raspy with a faint Spanish accent. It was dizzying how fast she spoke, too.

"-so many, honestly, most often I'm probably thinking about the ocean, or cute animals- like otters- baby otters! Have you SEEN baby otters??!"

The girl was still chatting away and panting with effort as they wrestled with the stupid umbrella; unlike the other girl, Amity wasn't safe with a hood. Her green hair was slowly becoming wet and plastered to her forehead.

She probably looked a terrible mess right now.

"Uhh-" Amity started when the wind changed direction and she was able to regain control. "I- thanks, dude."

"Don't mention it!"

"Do you- uhhhh-" What the fuck was she doing? What happened to the cool, stoic Amity that wouldn't tremble in a fucking zombie apocalypse? All it took was one fucking gorgeous brunette-

"Do you wanna-" Amity gestured helplessly to where she was safe again under her umbrella with a firmer grip on her shopping bag. She glanced up the path. "It looks like we're going the same way."

"Ooh, thanks!" The stranger grinned as she ducked under, another action that momentarily stunned the Blight. Why was everything this girl did so...dazzling?

Jesus christ she needed to calm down.

Umbrella Girl chatted as they walked, and Amity found herself dreading teaching the end of the passage when they would undoubtedly go their seperate ways.

But for a few minutes she indulged herself and got lost in the excited ramblings about otters and ice cream and pastel paints and future plans for tattoos, Umbrella Girl sometimes slipping into Spanish when she got particularly enthusiastic.

The path ended, Amity's shortcut to her neighbourhood nearby. The green-haired girl sighed. Time for whatever this was to end.

"-which really shocked me, I mean, I like to dabble in all kinds of art- I'm not very good at sticking to just one form of something.."

"Jack of all trades, huh?" Amity commented, smirking a little, but whatever confidence she'd mustered was absolutely sledgehammered by the beaming grin on the brunette's face as she turned to look at her, faces nearly squished together under the umbrella as they slowed to a stop.

"Exactly!"

Three days ago Amity was waiting for the schoolbus like she always did, sat a little away from the other kids. Sitting on a ledge jutting out from the public garden rather than the bench.

It was the little peace she had access to before school started and she had to tag along behind Boscha and the others. The most popular girls in school and the biggest fakes in the Boiling Isles.

Amity had been pretending to scroll on her phone when her attention was caught by a flash of purple ahead. Bright, bright purple.

Umbrella Girl had dashed off when they'd gotten to the end of the path, ranting something about forgetting to pick up a King? The brunette had yelled a 'see you around, Pointy Ears!' , almost slamming into a tree before sprinting off like a bullet.

Amity had stood there in the rain for a full minute, hand drifting up subconsciously to tug on one of her (admittedly pointier-than-average) earlobes.

And now she was here again, in tight denim jeans covered in doodles and a purple hoodie with cat ears, a big black bag slung over her shoulder.

Amity straightened up on her perch.

Once again, the girl cast the bus an unreadable glance before setting her big bag down before the massive brick wall on the outside of that Owl café that Willow had liked to go to.

Maybe this was the time Amity would strike up the courage to... what? Go over and talk to her? What the hell would she say?

Hey, remember me? We shared umbrellas? You spoke about the most goddamn random shit that confused me but it was the realest conversation I'd ever had and I would very much like more of it please?

And, another thing, the girl seemed around her age but she hadn't got on the bus yet. Why? Did she go to another school? But why didn't she go in the mornings-

Her train of thought was successful derailed at the first sound of a spray can shaking and hissing.

Umbrella girl dove straight into where she'd picked off, spraying random lines of white, continuing outlining and planning something massive all along the wall, presumably being paid by the infamous Owl Lady.

It looked sick as fuck and she couldn't even tell what it was going to be yet.

The bus app on her phone chimed, letting her know it was five minutes late.

Amity glanced back at where the girl was standing on her tiptoes before coming to the conclusion she wasn't tall enough and instead adorably jumping up as she tried to reach and join some grey lines.

Amity shoved herself off the ledge without thinking, and lurched forwards when her sudden movement drew the gaze of one of the students waiting for the bus.

She walked casually over to the other side of the pavilion, feeling way too many nerves for a usually unfazed and confident Blight she was known as.

Umbrella girl was humming quietly, and as she shook the can in her hands she whistled a few random notes.

Amity slowed to a stop, completely out of her element. Should she cough to get her attention? Casually lean against the wall and fake disinterest? Oh wait, the wall was wet-

"POINTY EARS!"

Amity yelped as sparkling brown eyes seemingly materialising inches from her own face- she staggered back a bit as Umbrella Girl laughed sheepishly and rubbed her head.

"Oh, jeez, I'm sorry! I just got so excited, I haven't seen you around...wait a minute-"

Umbrella Girl stared at Amity's uniform.

"Do you go to Hexside?!"

Amity was still transfixed by the sight of her with her hood down, revealing a mass of adorable poofy, thick brown curls. "Oh, yeah..."

"That's so cool, dude!" She grinned at Amity, following her interested glance to the wall behind her. "Oh! Do you like it? I'm doing some favours for Eda- she's who I'm staying with for, well..I don't know how long exactly.." Umbrella Girl's face fell for a moment, and Amity's heart twinged.

She recovered quick. "..so I'm doing a cool mural in the theme of her café to brighten it up a little! I'm hoping to convince her to let me go to Hexside!"

"....right!" Amity tried her hardest to keep up with her. "Well, it's really cool! You're very talented, uh..." Amity chuckled awkwardly.

Umbrella girl stared for a few seconds, cheeks becoming tinged with pink.  Oh god, she was adorable. "Oh! I forgot to introduce myself!"

She stuck her hand out. "I'm Luz Noceda!"

Amity suppressed a giddy smile and took the warm, soft hand, their skin tones contrasting. "I'm Amity Blight."
