losing game

Summary:

It had been 5 weeks since Sua had died and here she was, alone on the edge of a bridge. The bridge. She couldn’t take it anymore. She missed her too much. Sua had been her everything. Her light in the dark. The one person who had always accepted and loved her no matter what. Siyeon breathed in the cold winter air and felt the sting in her lungs. She stared up at the stars and started thinking back. Back to the past, the past that she would give anything for to go back to. A light breeze made her hair move. Her body felt like it moved with the wind. All she had to do was take one step.

Siyeon pov

It had been 5 weeks since Sua had died and here she was, alone on the edge of a bridge. The bridge. She couldn’t take it anymore. She missed her too much. Sua had been her everything. Her light in the dark. The one person who had always accepted and loved her no matter what. Siyeon breathed in the cold winter air and felt the sting in her lungs. She stared up at the stars and started thinking back. Back to the past, the past that she would give anything for to go back to. A light breeze made her hair move. Her body felt like it moved with the wind. All she had to do was take one step.

*15 years earlier*

I was walking to singing class with my best friend Yoohyeon. We had been friends since kindergarden and shared a dream of one day becoming famous singers ever since. It didn’t take long before we decided that we wanted to go to the same performing arts school together and one day start a band. You could say that we were just two average little kids with big dreams. The only difference is that we actually made our dream come true. Cause here we were, in second year of college.

I looked around in the hallway and noticed a big crowd standing around the announcement board.

“What do you think it says?” I asked Yoohyeon.

She just shook her head and we walked closer. The people around us seemed cheery. We pushed our way to the front of the crowd.

“Oh my god Siyeon are you reading this?? There’s going to be a competition. They want us to pair with someone from the dance department.”

“Yeah, not happening.” I said as I started walking away.

Yoohyeon quickly caught up.

“Why not? I mean you’re going to have to socialize at some point Singie.”

“I’m not as good at making friends as you Yoo. Frankly, I suck at it.”

“Have you even tried to make friends here?”

“No, but why should I. I have you don’t I.”

“You do and you know that I’ll always be your friend, but come on. What’s the harm in trying to meet some new people. I know you want to join the competition so pleaseeeeee.”

I sighed. “Yoo…”

“Please Singie. At least sit at the other table with me today. I’m sure your going to love them and maybe you can even find a partner for the competition mhhhhhhh.”

She looked at me with her signature puppy eyes and she knew I couldn’t say no to those.

“Fine, but if I don’t like it then I leave.”

“But you’ll love it.”

I scoffed and we walked into the classroom.

After class was done, lunch time came around. We walked inside the cafeteria and Yoohyeon guided me to one of the tables where 5 girls were already seated. I recognized a few of them. I had seen 2 of them before in our singing classes. Which made me believe that the other 3 were all in dance majors. Yoohyeon sat down next to one of the girls and I sat down next to her, trying to ignore their stares.

“So everyone, meet my best friend Siyeon. She’s the quiet type.” She said before poking me.

“Well someone has to be quiet to compromise your amount of talking.” I responded and they all started laughing.

One of the girls laugh was louder than the others. It was a warm belly laugh that felt inviting, the kind that made you laugh as well. I looked her in the eyes and felt something that I had never felt before. My eyes were just glued to her, as if she was pulling me closer to her with just one look.

“Very funny.” Yoohyeon said and poked me once again, pulling me out of my thoughts.

“Anyways, as I was going to say. Dami and Gahyeon are music majors as well and Minji, Handong and Bora are dance majors.” She continued as she pointed out all of the girls at the table.

We all finished lunch while chatting and laughing. Once we all finished and the bell rang. I was about to head to my next class when I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned around only to face the small girl that was earlier introduced as Bora.

“You are in a music major right?”

“Yeah?”

“Would you like to do the competition with me? I have to partner up with someone from a music major and Yoo told us all about how your the best of your class.”

“She’s lying, she’s the best haha.”

“Mhh, I’ll see for myself.” She chuckled. “But would you like to?”

“Why not.”

“Great.” She said cheerfully. “Can I have your number then?”

“Very smooth.” I said jokingly while putting my number in her phone. I saw her starting to blush in the corner of my eyes. I didn’t even intend for that to happen, but seeing her blush like that...she looked adorable.

I handed back her phone. “Text me when you want to meet up.” I said before running to catch up with Yoohyeon.

“I will” I heard her yell behind me and I chuckled.

I caught up with Yoohyeon and she turned to look at me.

“Singie, are you sick? What’s wrong? You have this weird thing on your face.” She said jokingly while touching my face. I swatted her hands away.

“Come on, tell me. Who got you smiling like that?” She asked while we continued our way to class.

“No one.”

“I know you Siyeon. Someone is making you look like a puddle.”

“Nope.” I replied and quickly went inside the classroom before she could as more questions.

*6 weeks later*

Over the last few weeks I had grown closer to Yoohyeon’s group of friends, especially Bora. Me and Bora had been texting almost every day and practised 4 times a week. The day of the competition was finally here. I had written my own song and Bora made a choreography to it. I just couldn’t wait to finally perform. We decided we wanted to perform under the name “dreamcatcher”. It gave us some kind of mystical vibe and we liked it. I noticed that Minji and Yoohyeon had grown a lot closer while practising too.

We were all getting ready in the dressing room. There was this nervous but cheery atmosphere. There was a big variety still between all the acts. Me and Bora both wore suits and I noticed that we were the only ones who did that, making me a bit uncomfortable. She seemed to notice and walked towards me.

“You okay?”

I took a deep shaky breath.

“I will be once this is over. Just a bit nervous.”

Out of the blue she leaned forward and wrapped her arms around me. I felt my body relax as she did and I put my head on her shoulder. Her hands made soothing motions on my back.

“You’ll do great. We practised more than enough and it looked amazing.”

“You’re right.”

I took another breath and pulled away. I was met with her two doe like eyes and her bright smile. I smiled back.

“Dreamcatcher?” I heard someone call in the distance.

“That’s us.” I replied.

“You’re up.”

I looked back at Bora and she gave me a small nod before grabbing my hand and leading me to the stage. We walked on and I took pace on the high chair that was put there for me, just as we practised.

“Hello, we are dreamcatcher. My name is Bora and this is Siyeon. Today we will be performing an original song called paradise.” Bora said before handing me the mic and taking place in her own spot. The lights dimmed and two spotlights, one on me and one on Bora, lit up. An all too familiar tone stared playing and I felt my tenseness fade. I melted into the music and started singing. Before I knew it the song was done and I looked next to me at Bora. I walked up to her and took her hand as we bowed down while everyone stood up and started clapping. We both smiled brightly as we walked back to the dressing room only to be met up with the rest of our friends running towards us, pulling us into a group hug.

“Damn that was amazing. Way to raise the bar for us.” Gahyeon said.

We all laughed and enjoyed the rest of the night, watching the others perform.

In the end we won the competition. That was the start of our journey together. We confessed to each other that night. We kissed under the night sky, leaves falling from the trees, a cold breeze in the air. Thinking back, things were so much easier back then. Simple yet loving. We didn’t need more than each other, we never did. We loved performing, it was something we enjoyed sharing with the world.

*15 years later, 5 weeks before Siyeon was on the bridge*

After college we started touring around the world. Performing everywhere together. Bora had taking singing classed in the end and I dance classes. We had helped each other along the way. We still performed under the name dreamcatcher. It reminded us of where we came from, back in the time when we were just 2 students. We had just finished our world tour to promote our new album. Bora wanted to celebrate with some friends of ours from back in college. I was too tired and I told her that she could go alone, that I would come with the next day after getting some good sleep after weeks of stress. Bora being the understanding wife that she was, didn’t make any trouble out of it. She was as loving as the day that we met. If only I had gone with her, then maybe it wouldn’t have happened.

She was on her way back home. She had drank a little, not too much. She was too responsible for that. Would it had mattered if she hadn’t drank, I don’t think it would’ve. It was snowing that night, so much that there was only a limited few of the road. She was on her way home, calling to let me know that she was on her way back home. That’s all I have left of her, the voicemail.

“Hi baby. I’m on my way back home now. I had such a great time with the girls, they can’t wait to see you again. I hope that you’re sleeping well right now. Soon I’ll be cuddled up with you in bed. Sounds great doesn’t it *chuckle*. I love you so much baby *slipping noises* *screams* *complete silence...*”

*today*

So now you know why I have to do this. As I stand here on the bridge, that bridge, listening to that voicemail for the 15 th time this week. Standing in the exact spot where my wife slipped and crashed into the water. I let the tears stream down my cheeks. I miss her more than anything. I simply can’t move on. These past 5 weeks had been nothing else than hell. This is my only option. I took that step. I wasn’t scared as I felt my body hit the ice cold water and my vision went dark.

My eyes fluttered open and I was met with her sweet doe like eyes and bright smile. I held her tightly as I began sobbing in her shoulder. I could feel her shaky breath against the top of my head as she cried as well.

“What are you doing here silly? You aren’t supposed to be here yet.”

“I couldn’t live on. Not without you. I love you.”

She wrapped her arms tighter around me.

“I love you too.”
