A Little Nerves Never Hurt

Summary:

Bakugou Katsuki had only been nervous a handful of times. This, disgustingly, was one of those times. He had finally come to terms with his sexuality and realized that he needed to tell his parents before his mom started pushing him for grandchildren. He shudders at the thought.

Notes:

This isn't based on a song, I think I wrote this before I got into my whole song shit so...it's just kinda there. Anyways, hope you enjoy reading it. It was fun to find again.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Let it be known that Bakugo Katsuki has only been nervous a handful of times in his life. Once when his quirk first came in and he burned a boy. Once when Deku offered his hand under the fallen log after he fell into the creek. And once in high school when he heard the nerd wanted to go to U.A.

He knew how he acted all of those times and he knew that it was a terrible reaction. That being said, his list of times for being nervous was starting to grow. There was the time when the League of Villains kidnapped him and several other times that involved the League. And that one time when Deku left U.A. for a brief period.

The final time he was nervous, which he can actually add to his list of times he was nervous, was when he had to tell his parents something. He wasn’t afraid of them. There wasn’t a reason to be afraid of them.

Sure, his mother was a little rough around the edges but she loved him. He knew that. He just couldn’t shake the feeling she’d be disappointed in him.

In his second year, he managed to apologize to Deku and explain why he acted the way he had. He wasn’t excusing his behavior, far from it actually. He was giving himself something to work toward, to prove that he changed. He told Deku he liked him.

It was the first time in his life he willingly gave someone the upper hand. He may be loud and brash, but he never gave anyone anything to hold over him. Deku was the first.

Of course, the nerd had just blushed madly before Katsuki walked away. Katsuki had ignored him calling after him and spent the rest of that week that way. It wasn’t until the next Monday that the nerd had managed to pull him aside and tell him he felt the same way.

Since that day, things have been great between them. Really great, actually. It was odd knowing that they didn’t have to deal with the League anymore and knowing that his relationship won’t be cut short with his partner's life. It was a breath of fresh air.

Until it wasn’t. Katsuki knew at some point he’d have to tell his parents he was gay. There was no getting around it. And with how much his mother would talk about wanting grandchildren well...it needed to be soon.

So he set up a weekend where he’d be able to visit them. Izuku was by his side, as he always was these days. It was weird bringing Izuku into his childhood home. It felt wrong, almost. Like the boy, he had bullied since middle school shouldn’t have been in his house. His parents definitely haven’t seen him since the beginning of middle school.

Naturally, his mother answered the door loudly. His father joined them almost immediately after her announcement and they were both pulled into the house.

“It’s so nice seeing Katsuki with friends again,” Mitsuki said brightly. “I haven’t seen any of his other friends in a while. What were their names, Masa?”

“I think Kirishima, Ashido, and Kaminari,” Masaru replied.

Katsuki rolled his eyes as he walked into the kitchen, roughly shoving his boyfriend into a chair at the table as he passed. “The idiots are still around if that’s what you’re asking. They just failed their tests and need to study. If they haven’t studied by the time I get back then I’m beating their asses and I don’t give a damn what Aizawa says.”

“Kacchan, don’t beat them up. They do try,” Izuku chided.

“Well they aren’t trying hard enough,” Katsuki growled. “Believe me, if they were then I wouldn’t hear Eyebags and Dunce Face every other night.”

Izuku’s face went bright red after he said that, reminding him almost of a strawberry. “It’s not nice to gossip about our friends, Kacchan.”

“Eyebags is a new nickname,” Mitsuki noted.

“Yeah, well, he’s a new fucker in our class. He looks like he hasn’t slept a day in his life and with how loud Dunce Face is I’m sure that’s just gonna keep on going.”

“Do you even remember his name?”

“Of course I do, you old hag! It’s Shi-something or the other.”

“Kacchan,” Izuku giggled. “His name is Shinso. And he’s very nice.”

“Oh sure, he’s really nice,” Katsuki drawled. “Always scowling at people and telling them to fuck off. RBF for sure.”

Mitsuki cackled from her seat while her husband gave a small chuckle. Even Izuku laughed lightly at his sarcastic comment. Katsuki smirked to himself as he watched the food finish cooking. He plated it up for everyone and sat down.

“What’s his deal anyway? I never hear you talking about anyone new,” Mitsuki commented with a full mouth.

“Him and Dunce Face started hanging out together,” Katsuki said. He kept the whole truth from her because it wasn’t his secret to tell. He was an asshole but not that big of an asshole. He wasn’t about to out people if they didn’t want it. Besides, Hypno was by far the least annoying fucker the three of them had tried dragging in. He could begrudgingly approve of him. “Dunce Face is way too eager to hang out with him.”

“Kacchan, he was like that with you, too,” Izuku pointed out. “I thought he liked you even though he said you had a garbage personality.”

Both of Katsuki’s parents sputtered, some of their food flying out of their mouths. “Holy shit. Pikachu said that?!” Mitsuki cackled loud enough to cause Katsuki to wince. “Damn, what’s that kid’s favorite food? I need to make him something for that. Izuku, please come over more and tell me everything Katsuki’s classmates say about him.”

“Izuku, if you do that I will stop being your friend,” Katsuki warned. The damn nerd just giggled cutely and batted his lashes. Fuck, Katsuki was whipped. “Speaking of the pipsqueak coming over more. There’s something I need to tell you.”

Katsuki’s mother tapped his father’s arm repeatedly while she stared at the boy. “Are you two finally dating?!” At both boy’s shocked looks she grinned widely. “Yes! Masaru, you owe me 1,107 yen.”

Her husband silently handed over the money with a defeated look on his face.

“What the fuck just happened?” As confused as Katsuki was, that exclamation had not come from him. His parents stared at the green nerd for almost a minute before his mother slapped the side of his head.

Katsuki held the place she slapped with a scowl. “That’s what you get for corrupting little Izuku.”

“Hag. Seriously, what the fuck was that?”

“Masaru and I made a bet when you were four and declared that Izuku was going to be your wife. He bet it’d take you twenty-five years to realize what you meant and actually do something about it. I bet twenty years. Since I was the closest I got the money.”

The blond hellspawn stared at his mother at a complete loss for words. He wasn’t even sure he could form a coherent thought after that. “So you knew?”

“Knew what? That you were gay or that you were gay for Izuku? As you grew up, you being gay became very obvious. I don’t know very many straight men that can wear eyeliner as well as you. We only knew you liked Izuku because of that time when you were four. Hell, we almost called the bet off a few years ago until we saw little Izu trying to save you from the slime villain.”

Katsuki stood up from the table and walked out of the house. He didn’t know where he was going until he ended up at one of the little parks he and Izuku hung out at as kids. He sat down on one of the swings and just thought.

Why was he even nervous in the first place? He knew they’d still love him even if the word was only used by his dad. The love in that house was clear to anyone that walked in. Disgustingly so.

Notes:

Did I give bakugo supportive parents? Yes, yes I did. Was it because I love Mitsuki and Masaru? Yes, yes it is. Could it also be because I don't have supportive parents? ...Maybe. Anyways, hope you had as much fun reading this as I did finding it again. I actually forgot I wrote this during a depressive episode sometime like??? two or three years ago? Fuck if I know.
