The Calm After The Storm

Summary:

Piltover and Zaun. Both cities thriving by their own means. Though as much as both have improved in terms of their quality of living, there is only so much Hextech or Shimmer can do against external forces. This includes Piltover’s finest as they’re pushed to the bone for means of survival.

So what does it come to when the two finally get their needed conjoined break?

Notes:

I wrote this after a typhoon hit our area just recently. It was certainly an... experience, to say the least. But I definitely don’t wish it upon anyone, not even my enemies. Stay safe everyone.

Work Text:

Zaun has its fair share of problems, what with drugs scattered around the premises in every Zaunite’s hands. However, their problem was now one of external factors: a typhoon that came just as strong as it left. With the whole of Piltover affected, one could say they were in a state of crisis—the lacking of water in every household, the depleting stock of food as the days passed by, and no power for lights.

Vi did her best, working both up and below while looking after her family, or at least what should be left of them. Ekko and the firelights are hard at work making sure their group stays provisioned, doing the occasional runs to the topside to raid for supplies. Rallying had been happening over the last three days as the whole of Zaun is in need of necessities, the enforcers simply trying to hold back the masses lest they get out of hand.

As for Caitlyn, the woman had her fair share of troubles as well, trying to ration the resources for the people while making sure to check up on what else needs to be attended, under the commands of the council.

Overall, Piltover is a wreck, poles bent from the strong winds, roofs flown off the top of houses, plants uprooted and destroyed—everything of which was nature’s work. Through there was only so much of what Hextech could fix or do.

So when the two finally had the chance to take a break—especially with conflicting break schedules—there was no chancing the given moment as the girls snuck into Caitlyn’s room once again, finding solace in her bed despite the messed up room.

The room settles in a form of peace in cuddles as their bodies find warmth in each other and only the faint sounds of breathing could be heard. Vi had her head nestled against the raven-haired girl’s chest as she snuggled close. Caitlyn doing the same as she lightly played with Vi’s hair. She missed this. They missed this.

The peace was calming. At least while it lasted.

“Hey, cupcake?” Vi broke the silence, her question coming out in a soft tone.

“Yes, Vi?”

“Do you ever sometimes wish you could just...fall asleep and never wake up?”

Caitlyn paused to ponder over the question. It wasn’t all the time that the two had talks of deep inquiries but it certainly didn’t mean they don’t have them at all.

“Believe it or not, but yes—sometimes,” she said, her voice holding the same softness Vi knows by heart.

The pinkhead shuffled to look up at Caitlyn, her vision focused on orbs of blue. “Really, cupcake? Even you?”

“Yes. Why do you ask?” Caitlyn’s face held no judgement for the random inquiry, in fact, her features now held the resemblance of a small smile, a comforting sight to the Zaunite.

Vi let out a sigh, “This whole disaster thing had been, I guess, traumatizing? I don’t know what to call it.”

“Ah yes. I don’t blame you. It was certainly a first for the majority of people.”

“I mean, those winds were stronger than any storm I’ve experienced, not to mention the downpour that happened throughout the night.”

Caitlyn flinched at the memory. It was as Vi described it—Cold, brutal, and unexpected. No amount of preparation could the city of Piltover be ready for a natural disaster like the one they experienced days ago. Sure, they have Hextech, but how far could Hextech take them when even the power is out?

“We’ll just have to keep going. Soon enough, this will all be down in history,” Caitlyn reassured, almost seeming as if it was for herself rather than just for Vi.

Vi simply smiled before closing the gap between their lips, a soft and gentle kiss shared between them. It was them and only them and the both wishes it could just be like that. Though everything has to end at some point as Vi broke the kiss before leaning her forehead against Caitlyn’s, a finger slowly tracing her girlfriend’s lips before whispering a gentle ‘okay’.

Sometimes life just has us making room for the things we experience. We don’t always get an answer for our whys, the moments for our whens, the explanations for our hows, and nor the people for the whos. All we can do is live in the present and make it worth our while, no matter what comes in our way.
