“Own you one? When?”

Notes:

This was a DCMK Secret Santa for Cruria.tumblr.com made 2019.
I'm proud of this even if it isn't the best fanfic out there. Two cakes is better than one, am I right?
I hope everyone has a good holidays! ( •̀ ω •́ )✧ peace!

Work Text:

Tokyo was a beautiful city in the dark, rarely did people see her beauty up from the streets but the phantom thief was the rare exception. But it was too cold - and awfully windy. Usually, after heists, KID would go to Jii’s bar to close any loose ends and tell if the heist’s target was the right objective or not and figure out how to send it back to the right hands. Tonight was different.

Heist work is mostly 60% pre-inquiry 30% heist 10 % fun. Actually 15% but who counts these things? Not him, while sprinting away from cops, detectives and the not-so-rare football of doom behind him.

KID took one last glance to the jewel before he would put it into Nakamori’s glove containment in the parking garage close to the building while the inspector was another side of the town following a fabricated claim of Kid being seen there.

Reconnaissance, right.

A nightclub is own by an upcoming street gangster, who got lucky and got connections to the high-end art world. His friends helped him to rent a vacant nightclub on the edge of the town close to the seaport and he would send them their annual party drugs. A Mutual transaction.

The nightclub was quite bleak from the outside with its brick walls and metal fences but tonight as always the place was jam-packed with people and tonight was the new year masquerade.  Wonderful.

Everything was going smoothly -  KID? Kaito? Hikaru? Right. Hikaru was enjoying his drink in the corner sofa with one of the real estate investors’ daughter.  And the lady was spilling all of the juicy things about his grandmother’s citrine embezzled bracelet and as a bonus - the estates’ information of security.

“Aaaahhh, thank you for the evening Hikaru-chaan.”, the lady pressed her chest against and rest her head to Hikaru’s shoulders: “ I really needed to rant about this to someone. But I need to go before my mother freaks out.”

“You sure you don’t need a ride home? My car is just around the corner?”

“Ah you’re so sweet - but no thank you. I’m gonna call a taxi.”. She picked herself up and slid her fingers top of Hikaru’s silk velvet shirt, admiring the wrinkles made by his physique. “ I’m gonna call you when I’m home. Enjoy happy new years~~”

Right, enjoy….Hikaru watched her leave by the side door and turned his gaze to the dancefloors and walked himself to the bar. “One water please.”

This was really a riching night, I did a heist and got some new important information about the estate’s back door system. I should go back to home before Aoko notices that I’m not home at all.

22.30 pm, still have time.

I really should get away from here before -

“Ah found you.”

Who was that? Oh shit.

Hakuba - of course, it’s him. Who would come in a masquerade with his black scarf and a mask which was clearly from their school drama club version of Zorro that their schools first years did to them - their soon leaving seniors.

And still, look like a complete cop. In a half illegal party house. This man is an idiot.

“Don’t even try to lie that you don’t know who I am.” Saguru said while taking a chair next to him.

“You stand out like a sore thumb, did you know that?”, KID looked into his class while glanced up from the bar wall’s mirror to see any people who looked this way behind them.

“Maybe so but I need a favor from you. And before you say anything you own me one.”

“Own you one? When?”

“The French diamond necklace heist couple months back? I let you go.”

KID pretended to ponder about it a moment.

“Ah yes but detective if I recall correctly you only left me go because you didn’t want me to be captured by that Osakan detective.” Hikaru’s calm composure turned into a KID’s signature smirk and leaned closer to Saguru,” Feeling possessive lately?” Saguru’s ears turned pink but KID assembled his composure after few chuckles and let Saguru finish his sentence.

“Yes and by that, you own me one.” Saguru straightened his jacket and ordered a drink.

Making Saguru lose his composure after two years of cops and robbers never got old.

Even now in their third year of high school and being classmates two years now and soon not seeing each other in day to day life they loved to annoy each other. KID and Kaito’s lives were drawn in the sand when Saguru was talking to them and Saguru must have enough evidence to arrest Kaito - even if the evidence was circumstantial. But Saguru made it clear that he wouldn’t try to catch Kid outside of heists so they started to communicate more and meeting outside of heists or school. But being called friends didn’t sound right.

“Well I suppose I could - consider it a new year’s gift, fellow coworker.”  KID shrugged and finished his water: “Let me hear it then before people get suspicious of you.”

“Is there something wrong with my costume?” Saguru touched his mask.

“It really doesn’t suit you. Even the Sherlock cosplay looked better.” Kid had to laugh.

“I really don’t need to hear that from a man who wears tacky white suits.”

“Rude.”

“You could have asked me anything but you want me to keep you company?” Kid said while they were walking to his rental car. “ You don’t have anything to do on New Year’s eve?”

“I just wanted to do something different.” Saguru said while taking his mask off when Kid was wiping the snow off the car’s windshield. “ All of my past new years’ parties were the same. I just wanted to do something unusual this time.”

“Aren’t you a little bit young to have a midlife crisis?”

“Listen here you -” Saguru’s retort was ended by a sudden shriek close to the street. Followed by a man running past the street “Help - Thief! Someone took my bag!”

Kid and Saguru changed glances. You’re thinking of what I’m thinking about?
“I’ll take the right!” Saguru yelled when sprinting towards the valley where the man ran to.

“I’ll catch you from the main street!” Kid could yell but it was obvious that Saguru would get lost here and the thief would run into the night. The whole place was full of tiny alleyways and storage houses which were excellent to hide in. Kid started sprinting to the storage house which was close to the alley where the man disappeared to.

Time to climb.

Kid climbed to the ceiling and started printing and jumping across the ceiling windows. He could see Saguru on his left running behind the man who did the strict turn to the right in the alleyway. The cold brisk air hurt Kid’s throat and his fingers started to become chilly but the adrenaline of the rush was an excruciating feeling. He saw the man run right in the front bellow of him in the alley and trying to outsmart Saguru who was couple meters behind him. Turning into a smaller alleyway. Trying to someway run sideways like a grab to the bigger avenue. Saguru stopped in the alley completely missing the man but him seeing Kid in the roof pointing to the alley, while Saguru looked confused of why Kid was on the roof, returned them to their chase.

Giving Saguru a couple of second headstarts while taking speed run to jump the other roof next to the smaller alleyway almost slipping off the roof. The man and Saguru almost at the avenue. Kid taking his balance, running couple meters, leaping across rooftops to the right side of the small alley and jumping across to the left side quietly so the man didn’t know he was closing the gap.

The man wasn’t really the fastest runner out there.

To catch the thief the smart thing was to do would be a capture in the intersection where the tiny alleyway connected to the main street to close all ways of escape with help of Hakuba  - but no one said Kid was a smart man.

Kid jumped from the rooftop to the small parking space next to the avenue. Sprinting the last meters he climbed the long metal gate just in time to tackle the man to the ground in the avenue right after he ‘poofed’ from the alleyway behind a storage building - Saguru close behind him.

The thief was incomplete disbelieve and grunting on the ground trying to split on Kid’s face.

“Have you ever thought about becoming a policeman?” Saguru said panting when he came closer to take the purse from the man’s grasp.

“Who said I wasn’t ever a policeman? Also does this count as different?” You don’t see me chasing lower-tier thieves like this every day.
“Let me go! I haven’t done anything wrong!” The man yelled from the ground his cheek to the asphalt. The person looked like he had had better days.

“Sorry friend - We have to take you back so we can give the purse back to the lady who you took it from.”

Kid had to keep a strong hold on the man’s hands while walking back to the same parking lot where they met with the woman, who thanked profusely. It took 5 minutes, 4;43;44 according to Hakuba,  police to come to take the man to custody and questioned Hakuba and Hikaru but it seemed like Hakuba’s family name made the questioning shorter. I guess there are bonuses of being a superintendent general’s son. After the lady went with her friends away - and giving chocolate bars as thank yous - and police after them. Saguru and Kid decided to sit in his car while sitting in comfortable silence, while Saguru was thinking of something new different him to do at New Years.

“I still wonder why the police officer was looking me funny.” Kaito broke the silence. Kid was slightly gone in Kaito’s mindset. This was starting to happen more in recent months with Saguru. And it seemed like Saguru noticed it too but never said anything when Kaito was fully a civilian.

“It’s because you’re wearing the mask still.” Saguru took a small bite of the chocolate bar, it probably tasted bad how Saguru looked like he had just tasted vinegar.

Kid touched his face to realize his cheap-looking white mask was still on his face and thought of taking it off until he felt Saguru’s fingertips touching the mask too, asking a silent question. Kid closed his eyes and leaned, felt how Saguru untied the string which kept the mask on the face leaving Kid with only slight makeup to cover his features.

Saguru still pressing the lines which were caused by the mask to smooth them with his fingertips. It was weird to Saguru to be so touch starved but he left it be. He and Saguru were playing with this feeling of closeness and flirting for months but it seemed Kid was the one pressing the romance between them but tonight Saguru was the one doing the daring.

“Hey Detective -” Kid tried to open a convo which would end the maddening silence but he was interrupted by fireworks and cheers inside the clubhouse which could be heard to the parking lot.

Saguru was also startled and leaned away to his own seat taking his pocket watch from his pocket leaving Kid on the driver’s seat: “It’s midnight.”

“Already? Time really flies.” Saguru gave a mute agreement while nudging his pocket watch for a couple of minutes of silence until Kid spoke.

“After when we split ways I will not replace you with somebody else, Hakuba.” That was an offhand remark but Kid could - Kid? Kid was nowhere in sight. Kaito was sitting now here with his hands tapping the arms rest nonchalantly his face tired of the heist and purse-grabber pursuit.

They watched on the fireworks in the distance and how the windshield wiper pushed the snow away which was slowly coming down. Watching how the sky greeted the new year with vibrant colors while Kaito could hear Saguru’s gears turning. The silence wasn’t suffocating as Kaito put his attention to the sky trying to forget Saguru’s presence.

Maybe not pushing Saguru would make him do his move? Kaito was very interested (and scared, but he won’t admit it) to see what he was about to do. Arrest him? No, they had gone that phase already. Kill him? No motive and no murder weapon to be seen on him. Rubik's Cube? Now there is a possibi-

“Hey, Kuroba-kun” Kaito turned to look at Saguru who suddenly yanked Kaito closer to him, so they were only two centimeters apart. Saguru took a small moment to put his fingers to Kaito’s hair. Ruffling them a bit to get them to the usual unkemptness. Pressing the magician so close to him that their cheeks touched. Saguru’s lips touching Kaito’s mouth’s corner which left them tingling of wanting more. Holding them there for a moment until Saguru pulled him into a hug.

Kaito could feel the smile on Hakuba’s face when he said: “Happy New Years Kuroba-kun.”
