Work Text:
It was your first time to visit Vergil’s side of the portal.
After that adorable “If you would allow me to, I would like to take you to my world sometime,” that Vergil said with his usual indication of shyness — looking away, of course you couldn’t say no. And you were a big fan of the DMC games so that was even more motivation. The only downside was that an hour spent in the DMC World was already eight hours' worth of time in your world. So you had to take a vacation leave for this, but that was a small price to pay for this unique experience and for the chance to do the visit instead of him.
It was Vergil who opened the portal from the DMC World at the day and time you had set, but he still went in just to accompany you, since it was your first time going through one. It was an interesting experience, like a three-second rollercoaster ride, with all the cold wind and a bit of spatial disorientation. But it wasn’t scary because Vergil held your hand the whole time.
He was even holding it still when you arrived at the Devil May Cry office, when the portal closed, and when you saw Dante. The younger twin immediately scored one with, “How sweet,” but Vergil ignored him and his mocking grin. Although a summoned sword appeared and Dante barely dodged it. You had just arrived but you already witnessed their brotherly love, your fan soul was squealing inside.
Dante welcomed you with another red rose before he gestured towards the boxes of his favorite flavors of pizza. It was a pizza party as he called it. He even invited Lady and Trish, saying he wanted to show them the person who tamed his brother.
The girls were also very welcoming as they asked you to a girls' night out sometime and told you to call them if any of these two idiots would become too annoying. Though you noticed that they were not as friendly to Vergil as they were to you or Dante. Maybe that was just their dynamic, but at least they were at peace somehow. You couldn’t help but compare though, and notice that Vergil seemed nicer with your friends than with Dante’s friends. You wondered if he was just making an extra effort to be nice to people related to you. Or maybe it was still because in here he used to be the villain in their eyes. As Urizen he kinda used the girls after all. But really, at least they weren’t fighting or being rude to each other. That's already something to be thankful for. Though you couldn’t help but keep checking on Vergil and not just talk with Dante and the girls. Vergil, on the other hand, kept telling you to just enjoy your time with them.
It was actually fun. Dante, Trish and Lady asked you a lot about their versions in your world, and you told them that in DMC4 they were all playable characters. Dante even gave you a heads-up that he would one day visit your world to play these games, and you said he was very welcome. Upon hearing this, Vergil’s brows furrowed. He looked like he was planning how to do it considering the portal-concerns, while Dante just grinned at him.
You asked about their world and powers too, of course. You asked if Dante could show you the Devil Sword Dante, and he was more than willing to; he was proud of it. Vergil was alert the whole time, dad-mode or boyfriend-mode, he had always been protective. You tried holding the sword with Dante’s assistance and it was so heavy, good thing he didn’t fully let go. How could he swing that around so easily?
You also asked about Lady’s weapons, and aside from seeing Kalina Ann, you realized why she was known as The Walking Arsenal. The girl even had the tiniest gun you wouldn’t suspect to be one. For emergency purposes, she said.
Of course you also asked Trish to show you some tricks, but Vergil was against it, as lightning was dangerous to a human like you. She agreed with him, and opted to show you a sample of how she conjured her clothes in DMC5 instead. She made you stand, then after pondering for a few seconds, she dolled you up in a blue dress that was a balance of elegance and cuteness. "It suits you,” she said, and the others all agreed.
Dante kept on refilling your glass with wine even when not yet empty, which made Vergil glower at him every time. But Dante would just smirk and keep doing the same. You loved every form of the twins’ antics but you were getting the feeling that Dante had found a gold mine in you when it came to teasing his brother. You wanted to be helpful in promoting more of that form of brotherly love but you also felt bad for Vergil... just a little. You found him cute whenever Dante would annoy him, so...
When the girls left, Dante insisted that you spend the night here. Even though your ride home would take only a few seconds, he just insisted. It was surely one of his ways to tease Vergil, since he specified, “You can sleep with Vergil— I mean, sleep in Vergil’s room. His bed is wide enough for the two of you.”
You found out how far Dante would go as he practically dragged you upstairs, saying he would take care of the clean-up and told you to just take a rest. You felt as if it were the eight-year-old Dante that was pulling you to his brother’s room.
You heard Vergil call his twin’s name in a strict tone, but he didn’t follow you right away. He probably trusted that Dante would handle you humanly enough, and maybe Vergil couldn't simply leave the mess downstairs in Dante’s care.
##
You were lying on Vergil’s bed, with him right beside you. You couldn’t stop giggling as you stared at his sleeping face – so calm, so darn attractive, so--
But then he spoke, eyes still closed. “You won’t fall asleep if you keep staring at me.”
You replied right away, “I used to fall asleep staring at your face on my phone’s wallpaper.” It was the same phone wallpaper that you had even before Vergil arrived in your world, the one who you assumed that was always smiling at you.
“That one?” He was familiar with it, of course, as he had seen it a lot of times. So he shifted to face you, and smiled slightly, imitating his look on that wallpaper.
“I’m meltiiing!” You covered your face with a hand and he chuckled, saying, “Foolish.”
Vergil then asked, “Did you enjoy tonight?”
You nodded enthusiastically before saying, “It’s cool to have seen some of their weapons and tricks, but I haven’t seen yours up close.”
“You have even dropped the Yamato before,” he retorted, though smiling.
“No, the other stuff.” You then grinned and sat up, showing him two open palms while saying, “Summoned sword please.”
Vergil chuckled weakly at your foolishness before conjuring a spectral sword above him by his shoulder. Since he was still lying down and facing you, he had the sword facing the other way. Without looking at it, he took it with his right hand. The sword actually went to his hand as if magnetized, then he placed it gently on your palms. It was light, as if you were holding nothing yet you knew you were holding something. It was also a bit cold, which suited its color. You tried holding it by the handle, then you got curious if it was sharp so you also tried touching the edge. But it shattered into pretty blue crystals before your finger could land, so you just settled on trying to catch the falling crystals.
“Fool!” Of course it shattered because Vergil willed it to. But he couldn’t stop his smile seeing what you were currently doing. “Why do you do that every time?” He was referring to the time you also wanted to try the Mini-Yamato’s blade.
You just grinned sheepishly and said, “Well it’s an unusual sword, I’m curious.”
“Tsk.”
“Don’t be mad…”
“Don’t be reckless.”
“I love you, teehee.”
And Vergil’s mad-dad look was replaced by a smile. Then he pulled you to lie down again, closer to him. “What form of power is that,” he mumbled as he draped an arm over you, and you just chuckled.
Your idle hands then trailed fingers on his arm as you spoke again. “I have a question.”
“Hmm?”
“Why is it that sometimes the portal closes immediately, sometimes it doesn’t?”
“It depends on the will of the one who made it,” Vergil explained, “If I made it just to go to your world, it will close soon after I get there. If I made it to fetch you, it will only close upon completion of the task.”
“Then why not make a portal that will let you go to my world then will reopen after, let’s say, one week?” you grinned as you suggested. “An automatically-reopening portal.”
Vergil laughed a little, probably because he had the same idea. “I tried that last time. It didn't work.”
“Then how about a portal that’s open for about a week?” was your next suggestion. “Or just three days. So you can go back on your own. Not that I don’t want Dante’s help, I’m just curious.”
“That might be dangerous.” Vergil pulled you closer before continuing. Even subconsciously, he was very protective. “Unwanted things might get transported as well, and leaving such a rift between worlds for a long time might cause some repercussions.” He looked at you and smirked before adding, “The same goes for a permanently open portal. I know it will be your next question.”
You chuckled and shifted to face him. Vergil then cupped your cheek with his hand. It was so warm, so comforting. When you looked at him, he seemed serious, but still with a hint of a smile. You wondered what was on his mind, and he must have read yours that he said, “I’m just glad.” He lightly stroked your cheek and put stray strands of hair away from your face. “That you are here.”
You hugged him in response, as you were glad to be here too. His left arm held you close to his chest while his right hand combed your hair gently. All his touches were so careful, making you wonder how much effort he was putting in controlling his strength in this world. You could easily fall asleep cuddling like this, but you could feel that Vergil was deep in thoughts, and you didn’t want to sleep on that.
##
Vergil held you close, contemplating as he stroked your hair.
‘When we are apart, a lot of time passes in your world.
‘I don’t mind you aging fast; that’s probably better, so you will not call me old man or Vergil dad-mode anymore.
‘But when you are there, I cannot stand not knowing what is happening around you. In a couple of hours that I am here, a lot could happen to you in your world...
‘We could both stay here. You seemed to enjoy it anyway and you got along well with Dante and the others. I'm certain you will get along with Nero too. But our work and connection to Sparda might put you in danger... Although, in this world, I have the power to protect you... but will it be enough?’
Vergil shook his head as if to shove away some thoughts.
‘And if you would stay here, you would be away from your family, your friends, your job...
‘In your world, we could live peacefully like how we did. I would find a better work, we could live a normal life, but Dante and Nero... It would be selfish of me to just leave them behind. I was not even there in most of Nero’s life.’
##
“Something bothering you?” you asked, holding out a hand to Vergil’s cheek. You knew he had a tendency to keep his thoughts to himself but with the way he was holding you, there was longing in it, like he was afraid to lose you.
He took your hand and kissed it, then held it, before finally speaking. “I want to be with you.”
That could mean a lot of things.
Your mind was instantly flooded with ideas. ‘Is there a BUT that follows? Be with me… we’re together now, aren’t we? Is he talking about sex? Noooo don’t jump to conclusions! If he's talking about it then it’d be the first time in this world. I wonder how different that will be...’
Vergil chuckled, catching your attention. “You’re getting sidetracked again, I can tell.” He then pulled you closer to his face just to kiss you. Speed and strength, wow, you didn’t notice how that happened. But his kiss was so gentle and slow, so full of feelings, like he was trying to communicate his mind through this gesture. And you could sense a bit of sadness.
Then he smirked. “Focused now?”
You felt heat on your cheeks and you must have turned so red because he chuckled again. “Are we, uh, breaking up?” You softly spoke of your thoughts’ conclusion.
“Fool!” He got upset a little. “Didn’t I just tell you that I want to be with you?”
“Well we are together right now...”
Vergil sat up and sighed. You got up too, but sat a bit far from him. He threw you another grumpy look then pulled you close to sit beside him. His left arm remained around you when he decided to elaborate, “I want to be with you, always.” When you glanced at him, he didn’t look mad anymore. He seemed calm and even wistful.
His right hand took yours, as if hugging it from behind. He smiled at how your hand responded, before he continued, “I worry about you when we are apart. Three hours here is already a day in your world. When I am in here, I spend every minute wondering if you are safe, if you are having a good day, if the neighbor bothered you again…”
Your smile was growing but the last part made you laugh.
Vergil just smiled but continued a bit more seriously, "If something undesirable happens to you, I won't be able to rush to your side immediately. I might not even know about it until my next visit to your world. The mere idea of being too late or not being there when you need me, it bothers me." He faced you before he added, “That's why I want us to be together.”
You smiled at him and said with determination, “Then let’s be together.”
“But I still find it difficult, deciding where—”
“I’ll stay here.”
He was taken by surprise. But you were serious about that so you added, “I can’t take you away from Dante, he lost you thrice already. And Nero, you still owe him some fathering.” You gave a silly laugh, somehow aiming to lighten up the mood as well.
“But I cannot take you away from your world. You have a life there, your family and friends, your students… Oniichan would get mad at me.” Vergil also made a similar effort and you both smiled at that. But he had to add a serious one, “And in here it’s dangerous. My bloodline is a constant threat.”
“Well, in here you are more powerful than those threats.” You grinned, but he didn’t mirror the expression this time. So you said, looking a bit more serious, “You’d be missing a lot if you stayed in my world.”
“You’d be missing a lot more if you stayed in mine.” And you couldn’t argue with that, especially when he added, “If you spent a week here, 2 months have already passed there.”
Your foolishness was suddenly triggered and you said, “Wait, is this our first fight?” You couldn’t stop your smile though.
Vergil couldn’t help but smile as well. “Fool. But if it is then I’m lucky.” He probably envied the hands that he hugged you from behind. “We are both stubborn and want to show more concern.”
“Yep, we’re a weird couple.” You laughed. Somehow saying it out loud that you were a couple still brought you some warm and fuzzy feelings. It was then when you recalled one of the most important things to learn as a couple – compromise.
So you faced Vergil and said, “Why don’t we do both? We stay in here and in my world alternately. We can plan how long, so we won’t miss out on so much and we won’t age so much. Otherwise, you and Dante won’t be considered twins anymore. Although, my people say that you look a lot younger than Dante. We have different theories about that. So maybe aging a bit won’t hurt, but just not so much.”
The last part earned you a chuckle from him. “You got sidetracked again but that might work.”
“Yes, we don’t have to choose. We’ll do both.” You grinned at him.
“As long as we are together.” He smiled at you.
Vergil then turned quiet, but he was still looking at you. His eyes then moved away from yours to look at your face, your lips, and even more downward, as if he was taking in all the details. Then he locked eyes with you again and said softly, “I want to be with you.”
You smiled. “So now you mean—”
But you were halted by his kiss as it was more aggressive than the other previous ones.
And the sweet night became more memorable.
“Wait! Wait!”
“What is it?”
“Dante might hear us. You guys have heightened senses, don't you?”
“He went out,” Vergil said in between kisses from your neck to your chest, “I heard him... since we started... talking about our worlds...” He then faced you for a moment to say, “Dante must have thought of giving us some privacy to talk. Or…”
“Yeah, he probably knew where that talk will lead.”
And it led to where it was expected to lead.
