The Waves Within

Summary:

Some said the biggest threat of a pirate's life is the sea in storm.
In reality, the most dangerous waves were the ones within you.

Chapter 1: One of his Kind

Summary:

I always thought Brook must have been so lonely in that boat, surrounded only by those he outlived.
I try not to think about what will happen when the same occurs with his second crew.

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

It was bright.

It was bright and sunny and shiny and just not dark.

Some may think of it as a the most normal occurrence, an everyday of life, but some may not be so out of his mind as he was always at the moment.

(Because he had no brain anymore, you get it? Ohohoho skull joke!)

He hasn't seen light since the concert the quartet trio duo solo...well he hasn't seen light in a long time.

(Do not dare think about that, you have a new life you should be grateful for it because they didn't get to, even when they should.)

(Even when Captain should.)

He had forgotten the smell of the open sea at sunrise, the feeling of the rays in his skin (or his bones, because he has no skin! Ohohoho), the sound of the seagulls' cry and the sea kings' rumble from the deep waters.

(Oh Laboon, how much did I make you wait? How much will you still be waiting for me?)

(Why would you do that?)

It was ironic how much a musician like him had become used to silence.

He even got the habit of barging his thoughts out loud, just to break the crippling sensation of isolation.

(But he couldn't do that now because what would they think? He was weird enough just to look at, he shouldn't add a vocal feature to it.)

(His Captain not Captain but still Captain had given him a chance, a blessed second chance, and he would cling to it with every fiber of his soul.)

(Because what else did he had to offer by now?)

He was still processing all that happened just some days ago. The expected fight, and hurt, and desperation.

The unexpected win. The harsh yet full of relief truth. The unbelievable offer.

(Was it all real or just another wishful dream?)

(It wouldn't be the first time.)

Yet here he was. Alive, still. Free, finally.

A member of his second crew. A nakama, they called him, their musician.

And he was.

From musician to Captain to musician back. A journey that had taken his everything his nakama his Captain his ship his shadow his sanity his hope his life and still he had yet to join the Flying Dutchman.

("What a blessing" some some would say, "to live forever".)

(Sometimes people forgot that Devil Fruits are called a curse for a reason.)

But how could he complain when he was given so much more than others? When he was given a gift, in the matter no one else did?

No matter how powerful, no matter how strong, no Child of the Sea could refuse Davy Jones' call.

And yet.

He was one of his kind. And for that there was always a price of solitude.

Notes:

I had never written from Brook's point of view, and it's both easier and more difficult that I anticipated.
It's hard to conceive the thoughts of someone who's been dead longer than you've been alive, but it's surprisingly easy to relate to a talking skeleton.

I hope I managed to make you see through his eyes as I did. Or lack of eyes, skull joke! Ohohohohohoho
