“shit! SHIT! oh my god oh my god what do i do” oikawa was absolutely panicking. he stood on a chair, dishcloth in hand waving at their smoke alarm.
“please, please, please, please!” he repeated the word like a chant at their smoke alarm, praying that the incessant beeping would cease to exist in the world.
all he wanted was to cook dinner for his husband, how did he mess this up?
oikawa wanted to do something special for iwaizumi. they had been together for such a long time; vacations, nights out, restaurants, dinner parties, oikawa felt like they had done it all.
so he challenged himself to cook for his wonderful husband, who did in fact cook most of their meals. he researched a recipe for a simple ramen for beginners and of course, agedashi tofu.
he thought he knew not to take on too much so he ordered a cake from their favourite little bakery and it was waiting for them in the fridge and 2 small candles were in their drawer where the lighter was.
the day had started off great, iwaizumi was on schedule and exactly where he was supposed to be which left oikawa plenty of time to prepare everything he needed, or so he thought.
he bought everything from their grocery store the recipe called for and he put on some music to get himself motivated, which brought him to the current moment.
where he was standing on a kitchen chair in the middle of their kitchen, trying desperately to put out their loud ass smoke alarm, which had gone off because somehow, while he was preparing the ingredients for agedashi tofu, the ramen broth had spilt over and started burning and oh god nothing was going right anymore why did he think he could do this.
after what felt like maybe the longest five minutes of his life the stupid smoke alarm finally turned off and oikawa was seriously debating whether or not to smash it up with a hammer, but like the responsible adult he was, he did not.
was he going to possibly have a mental breakdown right then and there on his kitchen chair, maybe? but that would have to wait because guess what it was iwaizumi hajime, the absolute love of his life’s birthday and he was going to cook his husband a meal if it was the last thing he would do.
that was what he thought until he heard the door open and footsteps make their way to the kitchen. oikawa looked around in a panic at his surroundings.
the boiled over ramen broth on the stove, that he had at least had the sense to turn off, himself, dishcloth in hand squatting on a kitchen chair he dragged under the smoke alarm, the kitchen, a mess of knives, spoons and chopsticks, looking like a whirlwind of ingredients and a typhoon had simultaneously hit and let out a strangled sob.
iwaizumi finally walked in, eyes widening at his surroundings until they landed on oikawa, the center of the storm, looking absolutely exhausted.
as oikawa met eyes with his husband, a small “happy birthday hajime” could be heard as his eyes welled up with frustrated tears.
iwaizumi rushed over to his husband as soon as he saw oikawa’s beautiful eyes tear up.
“thanks baby, what’s wrong”
“ugh! i don’t know! so many things! but today is about you and i wanted to do something special and make you ramen and agedashi tofu but i couldn’t even do that without half burning down our kitchen and how do you do this all the time! i’m tired and sore and i’m an athlete! i just wanted to make it all homey and comforting and like you could come home and feel relaxed, but instead you get a mess and a husband who can’t cook to save his life! and i’m so sorry hajime i really am” oikawa let his frustrations out as tears trailed down his face
“everything that could’ve gone wrong did and i just wanted today to be perfect for you” oikawa sighed as his lips formed in a pout and he looked up at iwaizumi.
as iwaizumi gazed down at his lover, who had tried so so hard despite hardly cooking ever and being an extremely meticulous person, surrounded by their mess of a kitchen, dish cloth in hand and a pout on his face, he couldn’t help but laugh.
“oh baby if i wanted a chef i would’ve married someone else”
“iwaizumi hajime! that! is! not! funny!” each word was punctuated with a slap to the chest as oikawa’s pout deepened.
iwaizumi laughed again, a deep throaty chuckle that had oikawa feeling like he was 16, when he first realized how in love with this man he truly was.
“thank you for trying baby i love the effort you put in. but all i need for a birthday for it to be perfect is already here in front of me”
oikawa looked around confused, “a ruined kitchen and a crying me? seems a little rude doesn’t it hajime” he rolled his eyes sassily and gave iwaizumi a pointed look
“no silly of course i mean you. i’ve only ever really needed you to have a perfect birthday. i can’t even remember one without you”
oikawa smiled at his husband. the feeling of love and safety spread through his body, a warm, comforting feeling that was always accompanied the time he spent with iwaizumi.
“you can’t just say that hajime! it’s your birthday let me spoil you!”
iwaizumi laughed again and this time oikawa joined in.
“okay sit, i have one final surprise, close your eyes”
as iwaizumi closed his eyes, oikawa set up his phone to record the moment. he turned off the lights and lit the candles as iwaizumi opened his eyes. oikawa sung happy birthday and iwaizumi blew out the candles.
“okay cut it cut it!”
“patience tooru”
“cmon baby i want to eat it!”
“stop whining tooru”
“hey! i am not whining!” oikawa whined
iwaizumi quickly swept his finger on the frosting of the little cake and smeared it on oikawa’s face.
“oh no you did not iwaizumi hajime.” oikawa looked at iwaizumi, and iwaizumi felt a flash of terror seeing oikawa’s eyes as he locked him in a death stare, and could do nothing to stop oikawa as he took an entire scoopful of cake and shoved it in iwaizumi’s face.
but iwaizumi, used to oikawa’s tactics just used it as an advantage to somehow get more cake in oikawa’s face.
and it ended up as a whole food fight, the two of them covered in cake and giggling like schoolchildren, but still so endlessly in love with the other.
“after this, you better take me on a date hajime, i deserve it after tonight”
“anything for you, your highness”
