For some, the solar eclipse in the year six was an omen, a miracle, a sign of Providence and good things to come. At the least, Miss Anne Elliot thought it a wonder, and recorded the date in her journal, along with her usual prayers to keep all of England's brave sailors safe during uncertain times.
Captain Frederick Wentworth little noticed or cared for celestial portents: he made his own luck.
