I've looked at love (from both sides now)

Summary:

Kara Danvers loved sleep and Alex teased her about it relentlessly.
But there were nights when she couldn’t sleep. Nights that were plagued with images of her parents; of explosions, and of her home planet fading into the distance as her pod flew away.
And on those nights she would find refuge in her sister’s arms. She’d fly in through the window that Alex always left open and shake the brunette softly until she opened her eyes. But tonight was different. Tonight she hovered outside Alex’s apartment, staring at the closed window that had greeted her like a slap in the face. Tonight she was alone.

OR

Chapter Text

Kara Danvers loved sleep and Alex teased her about it relentlessly.

“Did you get your full fourteen hours last night?” She would often joke when she strode into Kara’s apartment of a morning. The blonde would chuckle at her sister’s antics, not bothering with a comeback because the comment was often not too far from the truth.

Alex would sleepily lift her blanket and Kara would climb in and nestle herself against her chest, comforted by the steady and familiar beat of the woman’s heart.

Tonight was different. Tonight she hovered outside Alex’s apartment, staring at the closed window that had greeted her like a slap in the face. Tonight she was alone.

She soared over National City until the soft light of dawn settled over the high-rise buildings beneath her.

“Fuck.” a familiar voice muttered.

Kara tuned her ears and located the unmistakable source, Lena Luthor, in a top floor apartment of the building below her.

“And now I’m going to be late.” The woman muttered as she bent down and collected papers scattered over the floor.

Kara watched her intently for a few moments before she cut her x-ray vision off completely.

Rule 2: Never invade people’s privacy. She reminded herself, with a shake of her head.

“I’m just so over this.” Lena groaned, and Kara fought against her desire to peek through the walls again. “So fucking over my life.”

Kara listened as she heard keys jingling and a door slamming shut. Goodbye Lena, she thought with a sadness lingering in her chest.

SCSCSCSC

The streets were buzzing with life by the time her feet touched down on the balcony of the DEO. Alex rushed over to greet her, her smile wide and her eyes dancing.

“Maggie stayed over again last night.” She gushed, and Kara’s hearing picked up on the way her sister’s heart pounded rapidly at the thought of her girlfriend.

She feigned a smile, refusing to let her own loneliness take away from Alex’s joy. Her sister deserved to be happy, she deserved to be loved. She didn’t need a co-dependent sibling ruining the first real relationship she has ever had.

“I’m so happy for you Alex.” She said. And for the first time in her Earth Life Alex didn’t seem to notice the catch in her voice as she spoke, didn’t hear the plea behind her false cheerfulness.

SCSCSCSC

That night she tossed and turned until 2am when her phone rang for a DEO emergency. She donned her suit and shot into the sky, ready to wreak havoc on whomever it was causing trouble on the streets of National City.

She landed outside an abandoned warehouse, only to find The Guardian leering over an unconscious body.

“Looks like I beat you to it.” He croaked through his voice changer.

Winn hopped out of the van that was parked across the road and jogged over to them.

“We were in the neighbourhood.” He explained, with a sheepish shrug of his shoulders, “We’ve got it covered, Supergirl. We’ll take him back to the DEO.”

She fought against the urge to roll her eyes and instead offered a curt nod before she took off from the scene. Just what she needed, her two friends stepping on her toes and putting themselves in danger.

She hovered above the clouds, tuning in her ears in hopes to find something, anything, to distract her from her problems. But the night was as silent as a city could get.

Then her ears pricked up as the sound of a yelp followed by a loud crash. She darted through the air, following the sound until she found herself on the balcony of Lena Luthor’s high rise apartment.

“Supergirl!” the woman gasped at the site of the hero standing outside the opened doorway.

“I’m…I’m sorry for the intrusion Miss. Luthor.” She said, standing straight and folding her arms over her chest. “I heard a scream and was worried you were in trouble.”

She pulled her eyes away from the brunette and surveyed the apartment. It was a mess. There were boxes and wires everywhere and a table in the centre of the room with what appeared to be a very complex science experiment atop it.

“I was …working.” The woman explained, running her hand through her tangled hair. “And I’m clumsier than I’d care to admit, apparently.”

It was then that Kara noticed the pieces of vase shattered over the floor.

“Was it expensive?”

“Most likely. It was a gift from my mother. I never really cared for it.” She bent down and began to collect the larger shards.

“Let me. You might cut yourself.”

Before Lena could even contemplate arguing, Kara was whizzing around the room in a blur of red and blue.

“All fixed,” She said with a grin, once she’d slowed back down to human pace.

“Well, thank you.” Lena said, releasing a breath of air. “I shouldn’t keep you too much longer, I’m sure there are lots of people in need of your Super abilities.”

“Not really.” Kara dropped her chin to her chest and offered a disheartened shrug.

“And that’s a bad thing?”

“Does it make me a horrible person if I say yes?”

“It makes you human.” Lena said, her lips tugging up at the sides, “There’s nothing wrong with wanting to be needed.”

Kara snorted, and scuffed the toe of her boot along the crisp white tiles beneath her.

“I just feel… lost.” She admitted, “And being a hero always grounded me, you know?”

Lena bobbed her head, and Kara could see that the brunette understood.

“So, stay for a cup of coffee.” Lena suggested, motioning towards the kitchen. “There’s nothing that a swig of bitter black liquid can’t solve.”

SCSCSCSC

Kara was perched awkwardly on the edge of Lena’s couch because it was impossible to relax when her suit creaked and squeaked with every movement.

She struggled to maintain her Supergirl confidence up close and personal with Lena. The brunette was smart (she was the CEO of a multi-million-dollar company before the age of 25!) and she would see right through Kara’s disguise if she was allowed to get too close.

For a moment Kara contemplated fleeing, but then Lena breezed over carrying two lavish mugs and slumped in the chair beside her and she knew she couldn’t leave. Not now. Not when Lena wanted her and she had nowhere else to go.

“So, what is really keeping National City’s resident Super up at this time of night?”

Kara shrugged and pulled at the hem of her skirt.

“Ok Super, we don’t have to talk about it. We can talk about something else.”

“Anything else.” Kara mumbled, wrapping her hands around the warm mug.

“Ah, avoidance. I approve.” She said with a chuckle. “Talking is overrated anyway.”

Kara sipped her drink slowly, allowing a silence to fall between them.

She had always sought comfort in the presence of others, tuning her senses completely into them to block out the rest of the world. It felt invasive and insincere when she did this with Lena, who had no way of knowing that her soft breathing and steady heartbeat were not only audible to Kara, but also so distinct now that she could locate the woman from across the city based on the sound alone.

Would Lena mind? Probably. She was a very private person.

But Kara didn’t mean any harm. Her powers were hard to suppress when it came to her close friends; the special people in her life. And Lena was special to Kara. Kara liked to think that she was special to Lena as well.

But she is not Kara now, she reminds herself, pulling back a hand that had inched closer to her companion. Supergirl and Lena didn’t hug, or watch movies, or chat about work. What did Supergirl and Lena do? Aside from save the world.

“I must look like hell.” Lena commented, probably because Kara was staring at her like an idiot.

“N-no!” Kara stuttered, cursing her own awkwardness. “You look beautiful.”

“I wasn’t fishing for compliments.” She retorted, almost firmly. But Kara could sense the effect her words had on the other woman; pounding heart, uneven breath, coloured cheeks.

“It wasn’t a compliment. I was simply stating a fact.”

“Well, aren’t you charming.”

She let out a puff of air, one that could be considered a laugh.

“So they say.” She wiggled her eyebrows and smiled, hoping it came across as a confident.

“Who says?” Lena challenged.

“Well-” She hesitated “you just did.”

She lounged back in the chair, cringing at the Totally Uncool Squeaks her costume made as she did.

She’d stayed well after she’d finished the contents of the mug. There was a moment, when she glanced out the window and noticed the sun peeking over the horizon, that she feared she’d perhaps overstayed her welcome. But even as she bid Lena farewell, she saw a hint of sadness in the brunette’s eyes …like Lena, also, did not want to be alone.

SCSCSCSC

Kara backed into the door of Lena’s office the following morning, jutting out her bum to push it open whilst her hands struggled to balance two steaming coffees and an overflowing bag of food. Despite the CEO’s many protests over the past few months of their friendship, the ‘oh you shouldn’t have’s and the ‘I’m fine, I ate last night’s, Kara had remained persistent. She’d even stolen Lena’s calendar from a protesting Jess and cleared a 30-minute slot (aptly labelled ‘Kara Time’) every workday for the remainder of the year. Jess scowled when she saw the new edition, but Kara knew the secretary was secretly pleased that someone else was pushing Lena to engage in some form of self-care.

“Is it Kara Time already?” Lena glanced up at the clock. “I lost track of the day going through all this paperwork.”

Kara rolled her eyes and handed Lena her coffee.

“And that is precisely why Kara Time has to exist. I’m surprised you’ve lasted this long without me.”

Despite being perfectly put together, it was obvious to Kara how exhausted Lena was. The woman was no doubt running on empty after having been up all night with Supergirl.

Kara empathised. Whilst she didn’t need sleep, she too was tired. But in the light of day it was easier to pretend; to be the bubbly happy reporter everyone saw her as.

“Rough night?” Kara couldn’t help but ask after she watched Lena try to muffle a yawn with the sip of her coffee.

“Not rough – just void of sleep.” She smiled softly and Kara noticed the way she turned briefly to glance out the window behind her.  Is she thinking of me?

“I know the feeling.” Kara sighed and began to pull out the contents of the paper bag and lay them on Lena’s desk.

Sugary donuts. Bagels. Chocolate.

“You know I now have to work out twice as much as I used to because of your truly horrifying eating habits.” Lena groaned. “I don’t know how you look the way you do. I’ve never even heard you mention going to a gym.” she added, trailing her eyes down Kara’s figure.

“I work out.” Kara responded, ducking her head awkwardly.

“You don’t pay gym fees, do you? You know there’s an employee gym in this very building. I’m sure I can get you a pass … I know the CEO.” She joked with a soft laugh.

“I don’t really go to a gym. I just do my own thing.”

“We could work out together.” Lena suggested, pausing momentarily before hesitantly adding: “I mean, they say it’s better to exercise with friends.”

Kara bobbed her head and sipped her coffee, taking a moment to ponder her response. It’s not as if any harm could come from humouring Lena just this once. It would be fun. Quality time with her best friend… She would just have to remember to reel in her super powers. And to not tell Alex.

“Sure.” She agreed, “But only if you go home and rest tonight. I forbid any exercise or working late today.”

“Fine. Tomorrow, 8am.” Lena clapped her hands together with excitement. “I think this will be really fun, Kara. I used to go to the gym with an ex-girlfriend of mine. It really did help with my motivation.” She took a bite of a strawberry iced donut and grinned, “Actually, seeing her in gym shorts and a crop top was my motivation.”

Kara gulped, what the hell had she gotten herself into?

SCSCSCSC

“So, did you know Lena Luthor is at the very least not one hundred percent straight?” Kara found herself asking Alex in the sparring room that afternoon.

“Maggie did mention it.” Alex replied, throwing a punch in Kara’s direction. Kara, quick on her toes, easily avoided the attack despite feeling more than a little distracted by these revelations.

“How would Maggie know?” She questioned, trying not to be annoyed that no one ever thought to mention it to her. Alex shrugged, jumping back as Kara lunged towards her.

“It seems to be a gay thing. Gay women make it their job to be aware of other potentially gay women. Apparently, she made front page of the tabloids the first time she was photographed lip-to-lip with another              woman.”

Kara stopped, lifting her hands in surrender, before turning her back on Alex to take a deep breath.

“Does it matter?” Alex questioned, after a long moment of silence.

Kara shook her head but for some reason, deep down, it mattered to her.

SCSCSCSC

She flew by L-Corp during her midnight patrol and was pleased to see the CEO’s office dark and empty; Lena had kept her promise.

Kara’s midnight patrols were usually infrequent. They occurred only when sleep evaded her which was happening more regularly recently. Alex was staying at Maggie’s tonight. James and Winn were doing their vigilante gig. And Kara was…here. Lost and alone, floating through space like the alien that she was.

Her normal route home took her past Lena’s apartment. She slowed to a stop a few meters from the building and engaged her super hearing. Through the muffled noise of the city she was able to distinguish the brunette’s soft breathing. The sound was calming so she allowed herself to drift closer to the building.

“Spying on me, Supergirl?”

Kara nearly fell out of the sky. In fact, she dropped a few metres before she managed to regain some composure.

“As the infamous Luthor daughter - target to many a villain - I made sure to have state of the art security installed in the building when I moved in.” Kara heard footsteps padding about the apartment before Lena emerged through the balcony doors.  “Including cameras with motion sensors.”

“I wasn’t spying I was just-” she felt her face flush red, “I was doing a patrol and-” she shrugged, “I’m so sorry.” she finished guiltily.

 Lena laughed.

“Coffee?” she asked, heading back into the apartment without giving the superhero an opportunity to respond.

Kara hovered cautiously behind her, allowing her feet to touch down once they reached the kitchen.

“Can’t sleep again?” Lena questioned, seemingly unphased by the intrusion.

“Unfortunately.” She nodded. “How are you still awake?”

“Maybe I’m an insomniac?” Lena offered.

“Or maybe it’s your midnight caffeine habit?” Kara jested, as she watched Lena prep the machine.

“Or maybe it’s the feeling of someone watching me; An alien from out of space, lingering by my window, perhaps?”

Kara felt the colour drain from her face and she stepped backwards until the pressure of the wall met her back.

“I’m sorry Lena. I shouldn’t have come here. It is one of my rules. Rule Two, actually – one of the most important ones.” She rambled.

“You have a rule about visiting me?” Lena asked with furrowed brows.

“No!” Kara gasped, “My Alien Rules: ‘Never invade people’s privacy’.”

“Whoa, whoa.” Lena placed her hand gently on Kara’s shoulder.

“I would never spy on you Lena. I just wanted to-”

“Relax. I know you weren’t spying on me. If I thought you were spying on me, would I have invited you in for a drink?”

Kara shrugged her shoulders half-heartedly. She felt Lena’s arms circle around her waist and guide her toward the couch.

“Are Kryptonians always this sensitive?” Lena teased, brushing the hair back from the hero’s face, “Or is it only when they are sleep deprived?”

Kara sniffled out a soft laugh.

“You did not break any of your rules, ok?” She felt Lena sink down into the couch cushions beside her. “You have my permission to hover outside of my balcony window whenever it pleases you. Though I would prefer it if you just came inside, so I get to enjoy your company.”

“But you should be sleeping.”

“So should you.”

“Touché.”

Kara relaxed into the soft leather, released a shaky breath and closed her eyes. She heard the brunette shuffling beside her before the soft sound of the television filled the room.

“It’s okay to not want to be alone.” Lena whispered, pulling a blanket over them, “I don’t want to be alone either.”

Kara recognised the opening title of Mama Mia - her favourite movie - and lolled her head to the side to face Lena.

“A fan of musicals?” She asked, knowing the answer already. Lena was into gritty, dark thrillers and depressing documentaries. Kara was the one who had begged her to watch this specific romcom during one of their movie nights.

“Not particularly.” She admitted, “But I am a fan of seeing you smile.”

SCSCSCSC

Her DEO phone rang just before dawn. She stirred from her spot on the couch and blindly reached to retrieve it from the coffee table in front of her.

“Hi.” She croaked into the receiver.

“Sorry to disturb your beauty sleep Supergirl, we have a Xenomorph on the loose and your assistance would be appreciated.”

“Fine, I’ll be there in a minute J’onn.” She groaned, before disconnecting the call.

“Duty calls?” a sleepy voice asked.

She turned to find Lena still snuggled into the lounge, her eyes and nose just peeking out from underneath the blanket. How easy it would be to lean back into the warmth, and sleep the day away listening to the sound of Lena’s heartbeat.

“No sleep in for Superheroes, I guess.” She rose from the couch, tugged her suit back into place and slid her feet into her boots. She really needed to speak to Winn about a redesign, because this outfit was not comfortable.

“I could loan you sweatpants and a t-shirt next time.” Lena said, having read Kara’s mind.

“But then you will be able to see straight through my amazing disguise and my secret-identity will be revealed. Rule 1: Never reveal your secret-identity.”

“Fine, sweat the night away in that pleather.” Lena rolled her eyes. “And who is to say I don’t already know who you really are?” She asked, an amused grin on her lips.

“I would know if you knew.” I would know because you would be mad at me. Kara squirmed at the thought. She was a coward, avoiding the truth because she knew it would mean an end to this friendship. Lena deserved better.

“I think I know.” The brunette said confidently, “I just need concrete evidence.”

“Well tell me when you work it out. I am eager to know who I really am, too.”

“You’re a smartass, that’s what you are.” Lena threw a pillow in her direction, which Kara dodged with ease.

“I’ll see you around?” she asked, as she walked backwards toward the balcony.

“I will wait eagerly for the motion alert on my security system.”

“Goodbye Lena.” Kara said with a laugh.

“Goodbye Supergirl.”

SCSCSCSC

Kara arrived at L-Corp a few hours later to find Lena waiting by the security gates, wearing a tight singlet and some leggings. She smiled, enjoying her opportunity to once again see this side of Lena. She loved the power suits and blazers, but she knew she was one of few that got to see the CEO comfortable and relaxed.

“You made it.”

“Of course. Did you think I’d bail?”

“No, I just thought you might be…held up?”

Held up? She couldn’t mean….

Lena was eyeing Kara warily, so the blonde shrugged her shoulders.

“Nah, what else would I have to do at 8am on a weekend?”

Lena pursed her lips but seemed to let the topic drop.

“I hope you’ll be able to keep up with me Danvers.” She said after a beat. “I’ll be going extra hard to work off all of the junk you try to pass off as lunch.”

“Better than kale.”

Kara bumped her hip against Lena’s as they made their way to the gym. Lena scanned her pass and two large doors slid open to reveal the fanciest exercise place Kara had ever seen. Even the DEO, a secret government facility, couldn’t rival this…and they had the entire place to themselves!

“Golly.” Kara breathed, taking in her surroundings, “I knew befriending Lena Luthor would have its perks, but this is insane.”

“I aim to please.” Lena laughed, dropping her gym bag on the bench.

“Befriending Kara Danvers also has some perks, you know. I make sure you have a good rep through the press.” Kara joked, following Lena to a treadmill. She watched carefully and made sure to press all the same buttons as the brunette. If she matched pace, hopefully she wouldn’t raise any suspicions.

“I’m not in it for the reputation benefits.” Lena promised, “I’m in it for the eye candy.”  She added with a wink.

Kara damn near fell off the treadmill. Thank Rao for her ability to fly.

SCSCSCSC

Kara touched down on Lena’s balcony just after 9pm. The doors were open and she knew Lena’s sensors would have alerted the brunette of her arrival, but she still tapped softly on the glass with her knuckles.

“You’re early tonight.” Lena called from the couch, “Are you coming in?”

“If you’re not busy.” Kara responded, as she stepped into the apartment.

“Nothing important.” The brunette closed her laptop and placed it gently on the coffee table. “How’d you go this morning?”

“With what?” Kara asked. Surely she isn’t talking about their gym session?

“You left at like 5am...” Lena said slowly, “for an emergency of some sort...do you not remember?”

“Oh, the Xenomorph!”

“The what?”

Kara chuckled and plonked herself down on the couch beside Lena.

“It’s an alien.” She explained, toeing off her bright red boots.

“As are you.” Lena said, gesturing to Kara.

“Well, Xenomorph’s are more of a stereotypical ‘alien’. They are kind of scary looking – slimy all over – and they are very aggressive.” Kara pulled out her DEO issued phone from the hidden pocket in her suit and brought up the ‘Alien Identification’ App.

“Here.” She said, holding the phone out to Lena.

“Whoa.” She studied the picture of the creature in amazement, “It has an exoskeleton.”

“That’s not the scariest part. They implant their eggs into a living host!”

“Oh my God!”

SCSCSCSC

“I don’t like having to call you Supergirl – it feels impersonal.” Lena said a few weeks later, midway through uncorking their second bottle of wine for the night.

“I never said you had to call me Supergirl.” The clock was close to ticking over to a new day, they were two movies into a Harry Potter marathon and Lena was three glasses deep into the red wine.

“What can I call you then?”

“You can call me whatever you want, Lena.” She said, holding out her own glass to accept Lena’s offering of a top up.

“I’ll call you annoying, if you continue to insist on being so.” She poked her tongue out. “Clearly alcohol doesn’t affect you, does it?”

“Not human alcohol, no.”

“Dammit. I was hoping to get you buzzed so you would spill all your secrets.” She said with a laugh.

“I thought you said you’d cracked my secret identity.”

“Well, I think I have.”

“Then just call me by my name.” Kara responded with a nonchalant shrug of her shoulders. The truth was that the topic left her feeling uneasy. A part of her wanted Lena to just guess who she was so the hiding would all be over.

Lena scooted closer to Kara until their knees were touching. “If you haven’t told me then you don’t want me to know.” She whispered, meeting the blonde’s eyes. “I would feel like I am exposing you somehow. Like calling someone out for being gay before they’re ready to admit it.”

“Did that happen to you?” Kara asked.

Lena swirled her wine around in her glass, taking a few moments before responding.

“I have never been ashamed of my sexuality. No one forced me out of the closet.”

“I am not ashamed of my identity. I still don’t want it posted on the front page of the newspapers.”

“Have you been scouring the archives? That press release was nearly ten years ago now, most people have long forgotten.”

“I would never.” Kara refuted, “That would be such an invasion of your privacy.”

“Now I feel guilty for all of the times I google searched you.” Lena shot back the remains of her wine and placed the glass on the coffee table. Kara followed suit, fighting the urge to scrunch her face as she gulped down the unpleasant liquid.

“That brings my official count to four. I can no longer be held responsible for my behaviour.” Lena winked, reaching out to tug the end of Kara’s cape playfully. “Was it Alex who told you, about my stint in the tabloids as Lena the Lesbian? I must say, it was a nice break from Lena the Villain.”

“How did you know?”

“How did I know it was Alex, or how did I know I was into women?”

“Both, I guess.” Kara answered hesitantly.

“Gay women make it their job to be aware of other potentially gay women; you two are very close and she is very gay.” Kara nodded, the logic was sound.

“and people always think that knowing you’re not straight has to be this big revelation.” She continued, “For me it was very simple.” she smirked, leaning in so close to Kara that their noses were almost touching, “I really, really enjoy kissing girls.”

Her eyes dropped to Kara’s lips suggestively. Her one hand was still loosely gripping the end of Kara’s red cape, the other placed atop the blonde’s bare knee.

Kara wasn’t sure how long it had been since she had last taken a breath; she did know that a normal human would probably have passed out by now.

The shrill ringing of her DEO issued phone broke the moment.

“Saved by the bell…” Lena mouthed, as Kara put the phone to her ear.

“Yup, ok. On my way now. Thank you, Alex.” She disconnected the call and tucked the phone into her suit.

“More Xenomorphs?” Lena asked.

“Wookiees, actually.”

“They don’t sound too scary.”

“They’re pretty harmless, kind of like giant teddy bears.”

“And giant teddy bears require a Supergirl intervention?”

“Apparently.” She made her way on to the balcony, and Lena followed closely behind, “I’ll just cuddle them until they surrender.”

She pushed off the ground, pausing a few feet in the air. Lena watched on, resting against the doorframe with her arms crossed over her chest.

“I guess I will see you around, Supergirl?”

“You certainly will, Miss Luthor.”

SCSCSCSC

Lena: Early meeting today, can I take a rain check on our workout?

Kara sighed; this was the second consecutive day that Lena had to cancel their gym session.

Kara: No problem. Does your calendar permit a lunch break at least?

Lena: I think I can manage an hour of Kara time – My office at 12.

Lena: NO DONUTS.

Kara laughed.

Kara: I make no promises.

She brought a salad – selected from her favourite salad bar in Italy. The smile on Lena’s face after her first mouthful made the flight worth it.

“You always manage to find the most amazing food. You must tell me where you got this.”

“I can’t reveal all of my secrets.”

“Oh, so mysterious Miss. Danvers.”

Kara grinned, taking a bite out of her loaded bagel. She chewed slowly, watching on as Lena responded to an email with one hand whilst feeding herself with the other. She scrunched her nose in disgust, then pulled the bagel away from her face to examine it closely.

“Something wrong?” Lena asked.

“They put onion on my bagel. I hate onion.” She announced, picking the remains from her food - revolted.

Lena just smiled.

“I am sorry I had to cancel on you this morning.” She said, shutting her laptop to give Kara her full attention. “These anti-alien rallies are really causing some issues for L-Corp.”

Kara groaned, “I can imagine. I saw that there were protests happening outside yesterday.”

“Yes, well apparently L-Corp’s new pro alien stance has pissed off some of our more seasoned financial partners. Unfortunately, Lex made a great number of deals with likeminded businessmen.”

“And by likeminded you mean…”

“Xenophobic. Anti-alien. Assholes.”

Kara released a frustrated sigh. “What are you going to do?”

“Damage control. I just need to find a way to stand by my beliefs, by what is right, without jeopardising the business. I am more concerned for Supergirl; some very rich people want her dead and I speak from experience when I say that money is power.”

“Someone always wants Supergirl dead.”

“This is different Kara. The participants in these rallies are actively planning alien genocide, harming Supergirl is the political statement they need.”

“Supergirl will be fine.”

Lena rolled her eyes.

“I think sometimes Supergirl forgets that, despite what the headlines infer, she is not invincible.” She said, pushing her food away and leaning back in her chair with an exasperated sigh.

“Coming from the woman who throws herself into the line of fire every other week, despite having no superpowers at all?”

Lena glared at Kara, who responded by throwing a scrunched-up napkin that hit the CEO right between the eyes.

“You have very good aim.”

“You have terrible reflexes. You didn’t even try to move.”

Silence fell between them for a few moments before Lena spoke again.

“They are coming for blood Kara, Kryptonian blood. Don’t underestimate the strength of hate.”
