Chapter Text
“Why does it always seem to be YOU?”
Those were the last words that were told to Cas. The angel felt tears filling up his eyes as he left the bunker and the door shut behind him.
There was a clenching sensation at his heart and then a simmering anger in his stomach. He guessed he was of no use to the brothers any longer.
Tears fell down his face which he would have suppressed with his grace. The angel felt he was becoming too human for his liking.
Without money in his pocket, Cas knew he couldn’t take the bus and decided to walk by the road until he found… some place. Any place away from the bunker. Away from…him.
It was hours until Cas arrived at a nearby small town. He felt a weak connection with his grace and couldn’t fly if he needed to flee. He felt slightly anxious with the possibility of conflict.
Cas looked around aimlessly. He walked to a playground and watched children laughing and playing. This reminded him of when Dean sat next to him and told the hunter how he had doubts. No. No he shouldn’t think about that. He needs to move on.
Cas went deeper into the town and found stores lined up to the left and right of him. People freely walked from store to store. He took a moment to stop at a coffee shop. Even here he felt as though he didn’t belong.
He felt a buzzing sound in his pocket. Was it Dean? He wouldn’t forgive him so easily. Cas carefully took the phone out to look at the screen. It was Sam.
Cas’s mouth tilted down at the side. He then slowly slipped the phone back into his pocket. He sighed. Why was Dean so easy to love and so infuriating?
Well now he wouldn’t know. He wouldn’t bother Dean. He always felt as though everything was his fault right? He shut his phone off.
That clenching hand around his heart became stronger. He felt his body start to shudder and eyes to blur. Abruptly he got up. He would not be so dependent on him. He was- no is- a soldier.
He saw a flyer on the wall of the shop. They were looking for someone to serve drinks there. The coffee shop was a warm place. There were shelves of books to be sold on rows of wooden shelves, and a small area filled with couches that people could relax and drink coffee in.
The angel decided that a job is exactly what he needs. Especially now that he’s becoming more human. More vulnerable. Cas had enough grace where he didn’t need to sleep…but that could change. He needed money and a place for shelter.
Going to the library he had to use what he hated using. Computers. It seemed difficult as apartments would ask him for proof of prior income when he just started and no prior home. There would be no way he would get a job without some identification. Finally Cas called up Charlie.
“Hey what’s up bitch?”
“I am quite well, how about you?”
Charlie laughed. “Doing great with my new gf. What’s up?”
“I am in need of help getting the proper documents for housing and employment.”
“Dude I’m sure Dean and Sam can help-“
“I am no longer in the bunker. Dean and I are not on speaking terms”
“Ah you guys are broken up huh.”
Cas huffed “Dean and I are not dismembered no.”
“No that’s not… well anyhow I’ll be sending your documents as quick as I can just let me know where you are. Also I’ll send you a credit card.”
Cas thanked her and went to the postal service. He grabbed a box and found the credit card and documents. Cas found a small apartment. It was stuffy and small but bearable. He missed- no. The bunker was not his home. Dean wasn’t-
Cas started breathing heavily and sat on his bed. He was alone. No Charlie helped him. Maybe… maybe he could see Claire? She was not only his responsibility after all and it would be good to catch up with her. He decided he would do that as soon as he got settled. He laid down in his trenchcoat with his shoes on and tried to sleep as humans did.
With his minimal experience with Nora, he was lucky that it was enough.
“So you operated a… slushie machine?” said the man in a suit in front of him. He was an older man with thick round glasses scrutinizing the resume the angel had typed and printed out in the library.
“Ah…yes and I was responsible for overseeing all the products going in and out of the store. I have experience working with customers” Cas said with a small smile.
“Why do you want this job and why should we hire you?” questioned the coffee shop owner. Cas decided that money and keeping his mind off of a human that changed his very being wouldn’t suffice. “I think I have developed proficient enough skills to be a valuable member of this team.” The angel decided to be at least slightly truthful. “As for why… I feel as though I would be appreciated here. A sense of belonging. Even if it’s just to give someone coffee.”
The intimidating man in front him softened. “I think your work history is exactly what we are looking for. We just need the proper documentation and you will be all set. Welcome to the team Cas.”
Saying his true nickname that Dean- no don’t think about him. But instead of the alias name of Steve he wanted them to know his true name and form a genuine relationship.
