something to get by

Summary:

“You act like you're in love with me, sometimes.”

“You mean, me asking to marry you?”

“No. Living with me, cooking for me, cleaning for me, mending my clothes. Taking me out to dinner. Telling me to go to sleep instead of reading or painting all night. Taking my jobs when I’m too tired to do them.”

Hisoka proposes, sort of.

Notes:

this is what happened in between election arc and black whale togashi told me. hisoka was never in pain once nothing bad happened to him ever

Work Text:

“I asked your father if I could marry you,” Hisoka tells Illumi over breakfast.

They don't look up from the book they’re reading as they sip their coffee. “Why did you do that?”

“I want to marry you.”

“To get on my health insurance?”

“And to be your husband.”

Now they look up. Hisoka’s face is perfectly straight, and even as they stare at him, he doesn’t flinch. “What?”

He drops the act and grins. Illumi should have known.

“So I can share your bank account.”

“Oh. I thought you meant—”

“—that I’m in love with you? You flatter yourself, Illumi.”

They shrug and look back down at their book. “Many people have been in love with me.”

“I don’t doubt it.”

“You act like you are, sometimes.”

“You mean, me asking to marry you?”

“No. Living with me, cooking for me, cleaning for me, mending my clothes. Taking me out to dinner. Telling me to go to sleep instead of reading or painting all night. Taking my jobs when I’m too tired to do them.”

“And fucking you?”

Illumi thinks about it for a moment. “I suppose. But you could do that if you weren’t in love with me.”

“Would I?”

“I’m not sure. Wouldn’t you?”

“Are you asking me if I’m in love with you?”

“Are you confirming that you are?”

“Would you be angry if I was?”

Illumi closes their book with a snap. “Don’t I let you do all those things for me?”

“Are you confessing?”

“Do I need to?”

Hisoka is silent for a moment, and then starts laughing. “You’re impossible, you know that?”

“Are you going to ask me to marry you, or not?”

He leans over the table and kisses them on the head. “I am. It was nice to know we love each other first, though.”

Illumi blinks. “Is love important in a marriage?”

“Quite. And I am going to kill your parents.”

Hisoka’s smile isn’t anywhere near as fox-like as usual, and somehow, it makes them feel sort of—warm, as if they’re under a heated, weighted blanket in winter. “Wow, you do love me.”

“I do. And, knowing that you love me too, I would love to know if you, Illumi Zoldyck, will marry me.”

Hisoka isn’t down on one knee, nor are they in an expensive restaurant or the Eiffel Tower or anything like that. He isn’t even holding a ring.

They’re just eating breakfast in Hisoka’s apartment, and somehow, that’s how Illumi knows that it’s real. That it’s not to share their health insurance, or to get access to their bank account, or even just for the knowledge that their family can’t go after him.

Somehow, they know that Hisoka is doing this for them, and that’s why they nod and say, “I think I’d love to.”
