“This is dumb.” Eddie said looking at his Uncle with a displeased face. The StarCourt Mall was the last place he really wanted to be.
“The day you’re too old to bribe with ice cream, I don’t know what I’ll do.” His Uncle Wayne was laughing some as he said it.
“I really don’t need ice cream, it was a joke.”
“Sure it was, come on, it’s fine.”
“Really, we got what you needed let’s leave.” He could feel people stare at them. He didn’t like it.
“I said we would get ice cream, we’re getting ice cream.” Wayne was nothing if not stubborn.
“Fine, fine.” He conceded to his Uncle with a small smile. He saw the girl at the counter, Rachel maybe? Ruth?
“Hey Robs, I’m going to get a drink.” His eyes shot up to see Steve Harrington walking into the back, his heart rate picked up some with nerves. He didn’t want to be made fun of today. He didn’t want to be made fun of in front of his uncle by some high school has been waiting to happen.
“Erica, you cannot have another sample.” The girl was laughing as she handed another small spoon.
“Come on Robin,” so the girls name was Robin, he remembered her from band, “just a couple more.”
“There’s a line behind you.” Robin was laughing.
“Can I have a two scoop chocolate on Steve’s tab.”
“You can have a one scoop on Steve’s tab.” He heard Steve yell from the back.
“You heard the man.” Robin gave the little girl her ice cream while she made a comment walking past him and Wayne. The next person went up and he was begging everything that was holy that he didn’t have to face Harrington. He heard pushing behind him.
“Sorry, sorry, excuse us, we aren’t getting ice cream.” A group of kids pushing through the line.
“Damn kids.” Wayne muttered. He watched as the kids slammed on the bell looking Robin in the eyes, she sighed heavily.
“Dingus! Your children are here!” He walked Steve come out from the back with an exasperated look.
“You know the rules.” His hands were placed on his hips as the kids pushed through.
“We know we know!” The taller one said.
“Nothing scary, nothing we would need our parents for, and nothing that has sex.” The red head had a devious look. Robin had continued to serve ice cream as Steve walked over to the side with his children?
“We need money for snacks. Please?” The smaller boy, Will his name was Will, he went missing last fall, that’s right, begged him with puppy dog eyes.
“Ugh, you kids are killing me, you know that?” Steve was reaching into his back pocket as every child looked at him expectantly and he handed over cash.
“Thank you.” Was said by a couple of the kids.
“Yeah, yeah, you’re welcome. You know the rules, be back here by ten you got it? We close at ten.”
“Yes, we know.” The tallest boy who had slammed on the bell said.
“Okay, see you guys after the movie.” Steve said, the three boys ran off into the back, the girl stayed behind and smiled.
“Can we get food at the diner afterwards?” She asked him with a pleading smile.
“Magic word?”
“Abracadabra.” She deadpanned, Eddie couldn’t help but laugh some. Wayne looked a little more amused as well.
“Not the word I was looking for,” he started, Robin cut him off.
“It is a magic word though Steve!”
“It is a magic word, so fine we can.”
“Yes!” The girl smiled widely before taking off past him.
“Wrapped around your finger.” Robin said with a smile.
“Shut it Buckley.” Eddie had so many more questions and the interaction didn’t leave his head as him and his Uncle got ice cream. Just… so many questions.
