The Little Shop of Flowers

Summary:

When Sam, Dean, and Cas discover witches and flowers are responsible for recent deaths, Dean and Cas visit a flower shop, where they soon get distracted from the case.

Suptober - Day 3: Digital

Notes:

I'm quite early today, but it's October 3rd here.
Today's story takes a bit of a different route than the prompt might suggest. I had some other ideas, but this one stuck.

Not beta'd as always during Suptober. Sorry.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

“How did he die?” Dean asked, unable to detect any cause of death himself.

Cas knelt down next to the body, his hand an inch above the dead man’s forehead. “Cardiac arrest caused by poisoning.”

“Duh?”

“For some reason this man ingested a heavy dose of digitalis purpurea, Dean.”

“Digital-what?” Dean asked, frowning.

Cas rolled his eyes. “Digitalis purpurea. Better known as common foxglove.”

“Isn’t that flower only native to Europe?” Sam inquired.

“Yes, but it has also naturalised in parts of North America in recent years,” Cas explained.

“So what? You wanna tell me that guy ate a bunch of flowers and died? Awesome. Case closed. Let’s go home.”

“Dean!”

“What?” Dean stopped at the door and glared at Cas and Sam who still stood next to the corpse.

“I don’t think this man ate the flowers willingly,” Cas said.

“Don’t tell me it’s witches,” Dean exclaimed looking from Cas to Sam and back, and his brother grimaced. “Goddammit, it’s those freaking witches, right? Can’t we have one month of peace? Just this once.”

“I’m sorry, Dean,” Cas apologised.

“Not your fault, sunshine.” Dean smiled crookedly at his friend. If his eyes rested a moment to long on the angel’s lips, he couldn’t help it. They were so damn distracting. “So, what now? Do we rob a flower shop? Or do we interrogate Eliza Doolittle to determine if she’s a killer witch?”

“Get this,” Sam chimed in, a notebook in his hand. “This guy actually had an appointment at a local flower shop. Yesterday.”

“Awesome! Don’t tell me we have to go flower shopping.”

“You and Cas can visit the store. I’ll head over to the library and research this flower. There’s something we’ve missed.”

Without another word, Sam walked out of the room and through the front-door.

“Huh?” Dean blinked, before he caught himself. “Come on, buddy. Let’s hit that store.”

Castiel watched Dean closely. He was sure Dean was oblivious about the language of flowers. He once had brought him a little bouquet of bellis perennis. Dean had looked at the daisies and smiled sheepishly. Of course, he had grumbled about the flowers, but his cheeks had coloured with a lovely shade of pink. However, Castiel doubted Dean had realised the deeper meaning of it all.

He had tried other flowers, always getting the same reaction from Dean. This time, though, Castiel wanted to do it right. There was one flower, even Dean wouldn’t be able to deny being aware of its meaning.

Taking the single red rose out of its vase, Castiel used a burst of Grace to revitalise the enfeebled flower, before he stepped in front of Dean.

At first, Dean frowned at him, but when Castiel handed him the flower, his mouth fell open and he gaped. Frozen in place, Dean’s jaw vibrated, but no words left his lips. He blinked at Castiel and stared at him questioningly.

Castiel smiled, and nodded.

Dean swallowed. “You're serious?”

“Yes,” Castiel answered, watching his friend closely.

A smile broke free on Dean’s face. He looked around and determinedly picked a single fern out of a vase, handing it to Castiel.

Castiel’s human heart skipped a beat. “You know?”

Dean wiggled his eyebrows. “Come here.”

Closing the space between them, Castiel shut his eyes when his lips met Dean’s.

Just when their kiss turned heated, the door to the store flew open, and Sam entered. He didn’t stop, but walked right past them to the back of the store.

Castiel heard the entire conversation that arose. Soon the voices got louder and a commotion started. Glass broke, before one single shot ended all of it and Sam strolled back into the store.

“Guys, seriously?” he asked, staring at them with a raised eyebrow.

Dean shrugged and grinned at his brother. Wordlessly, he picked up a bouquet of pink, red, and white Camellia and handed it to Castiel. Only a wink and the biting of his bottom lip indicated that Dean knew exactly what he was doing.

“You're coming?” he asked, when he strode to the back of the shop, ready to tidy up Sam’s mess.

Smiling, Castiel followed him, as he would always do.

Notes:

Hope you enjoyed.

I don't know anything about the language of flowers, but these are the meanings I found:
Daisy: Innocence, Loyal love, I’ll never tell
Rose, red: Love, I love you
Fern: Magic, Fascination, Secret bonds of love
Camellia, pink: Longing for You
Camellia, red: You’re a Flame in My Heart
Camellia, white: You’re Adorable
