Chapter Text
“What a night!” Kara crooned when the newlywed’s car was out of sight—for those common folk without supervision, that is.
She threw her head back as a waterfall of happiness and relief intertwined with a tingle of exasperation washed over her. As rewarding as it had been single handedly orchestrating the best wedding the universe had ever witnessed—second only to Pam Beesly and Jim Halpert’s Niagara Falls wedding extravaganza—, even the Girl of Steel needed a rest.
“I can’t wait for the next wedding! Wahoo!” Winn cheered, his cheeks tickled champagne-pink.
Brainy nodded stoutly in agreement. “Even without the genius genes I possess, one can clearly see that the statistical probability of the next wedding we all shall attend to be that of Nia and mine is exceptionally high. I have factored in that not only did she catch the bouquet, but that my love for her continues to increase at a rapid rate day by day, nearly exceeding the tender restraints that my heart can hold. If my love were to continue rising at this rate, which surely it will, then there is a 100 percent guarantee that soon enough my heart will burst from a sheer overload of oxytocin!” The Coluan finished his ramble with a giddy arm in the air, a gesture of hoorah!
“I know the feeling.” Lena whispered under her breath, loud enough that only those equipped with super hearing would be able to detect it.
“Is this his romantic way of saying he wants to get hitched ASAP?” Kara wondered aloud, trying to ignore the flurry of questions that had begun to swarm in her stomach, ebbing away at her insides one pinch of jealousy at a time.
Who on Earth, or Krypton, made Lena feel like her heart was going to explode? And why, for the love of Rao, could Kara not be the one to do so?
Of course Lena was allowed to date whomever she desired —Kara wasn’t that possessive. And after all, Lena was Earth’s most desirable bachelorette—unarguably second to only National City’s recreational blonde spandex-wearing heroine (although said heroine would never admit it).
Still, Kara couldn’t shake the sinister and slippery feel of jealousy from slithering up her spine, ready to coil around her heart and crush it with a final squeeze.
(If anyone noticed the way Kara clenched the hem of her periwinkles dress, hard enough she tore a chunk off, well, no one said anything.)
Lena was her’s! Or more accurately, she was Lena’s, Kara realized with a sigh.
Falling in love with Lena was an irrevocable, inevitable thing. And as devastating as it was to keep the truth from her best friend (once again), Kara wouldn’t trade her feelings (or Lena) for the world.
Until the sun died and even after that, Kara’s heart would belong to Lena Luthor regardless of whether the CEO returned her feelings or not. For years Kara suspected the latter, but now she was not so sure. The energy between them had been different ever since she was rescued from the Phantom Zone. More charged. More… reckless. Their relationship had gone to hell and back, what else did they have to lose?
(“Everything.” Kara thought).
Nia beamed at her boyfriend with pride and pressed her lips in the back of his left hand with an audibly loud, smacking mwah!
(Kara cringed as the crackling feedback reached her ears.)
Brainy reciprocated the action and then cupped Nia’s cheeks clumsily, smushing his mouth into hers.
Feeling the need to give the couple a bit of privacy, Kara averted her gaze and smiled adoringly at the back of her best friend’s head. She tried wholeheartedly to telepathically communicate all the love and adoration she felt for the witch.
Presumably—and terrifyingly— the Super Friends had another telepath on their hands because within a moment Lena met her gaze with a soft, incalculable smile across her face and a raised eyebrow.
Upon being caught staring, Kara abruptly moved her vision down to a less trackable area.
She had intended to purge her gaze from Lena all together, but it’s not her fault that her eyes were compelled to trace every sweet curve of Lena’s body that that mauve satin had the absolute pleasure of hanging around. She ogled the excruciatingly plunged neckline and envied that it dwelled in the area from Lena’s clavicle to just above her navel.
And, oh. Oh.
Lena was like a mouthwatering grape popsicle of whom Kara wanted lick every inch of and—
Esme let out a squeal of laughter which prompted Kara to look up from The View. She found her niece staring right at her with a perplexed expression. “Aunt Kara, don’t be silly! Aunt Lena’s not a popsicle. She’s a human bean like my mommies! You can’t lick her!”
The blonde let out a strangled and mortified yelp.
It’s not polite to eavesdrop on people's mental pining, Es!
“Excuse me?” Lena raised an entertained yet bemused eyebrow in Kara’s direction.
In fact everyone seemed to pause their conversations and turn around to stare at Kara expectantly.
Nia, who was still wrapped around the figure of her twelfth level intellect boyfriend, sent Kara a brilliantly-gleaming smirk that put the notorious Cheshire Cat to shame.
Winn guffawed impishly and elbowed a sour-faced James Olsen in the ribs.
Eliza’s eyes widened and flicked around curiously at the group.
The Martian Manhunter was frozen in a rigid grimace, his green complexion completely blanched.
“Okay!” Kara yelped through gritted teeth, ignoring the fact that her face had shape-shifted into a ripe tomato. “Well this was a positively lovely wedding, but I think a certain princess needs her beauty sleep.” She squeezed Esme’s shoulder with one hand and ruffled her muddy curls with the other.
Despite how humiliated she was, it would be a herculean task for Kara to stay mad at her niece. She understood, better than most, how difficult it was adjusting to new powers. Alex and Kelly had the talk with Esme about not tapping into others’ powers or using them on people without their consent (unless of course a situation entailed her to do so; for self-defense), but Kara also knew that new powers were difficult to control and sometimes curiosity would get the best of you (she was speaking from experience).
But, Rao help her to never so much as think about Lena in the presence of a power mimicker again.
Wait. If Esme read her mind by tapping into J’onn’s powers then that meant—-
Oh sweet jeju of Rao!
Her father figure had overheard his daughter mentally thirsting over her best friend, hadn't he?!
Fudge.
No, you know what? This predicament called for a proper fu—
“Sweetie,” A tap on her shoulder knocked Kara out of her anxiety spiral. “I’m going to start heading back. I just wanted to say goodbye.”
“No!” Kara exclaimed, dramatically shaking the shoulders of her foster mother. “It’s too late for you to drive back to Midvale. It will take hours!”
“I know. I was referring to the hotel room I booked for the night.”
“Nonsense!” Kara shook her head with a giddy smile. “You are staying with us at Alex and Kelly’s house. There’s more than enough room for Grandma, isn’t that right, kiddo?” Kara booped Esme’s nose.
“Yep!” Esme beamed. “Stay with us, Grandma! Please…”
“Oh…I wouldn’t want to impose.”
“These two won’t take no for an answer.” Lena chuckled, draping her arm around the Kryptonian.
Thankfully the remaining guests had quickly decided to go back to their conversations after Esme busted Kara for ogling her best friend.
“You know us well.” Kara kissed the brunette’s cheek, making the witch flinch in surprise. But after Lena recovered from the initial shock, she shot the blonde a luminous smile. And Kara…Kara was gone. Lost in ‘La La Lena Land,’ as Nia had once said.
“I appreciate the offer, really I do, but I’ve already checked in and paid for the room. It just wouldn’t make sense.” Eliza shook her head. “Unless…” The matriarch lowered her voice and peered at Kara with raised eyebrows and a knowing smile. “I can watch Esme for the night and… you two can take the hotel room.” She gestured between the blonde and the brunette.
Kara gasped at the completely false implications. “Eliza!” She hissed, cheeks burning a vibrant shade of public humiliation. “Why would best friends need a hotel room? That’s…that’s…crazy! Insane! Bonkers! Hah hah hah.” Kara laughed weakly, eyes bulging out of her head. “Okay let’s go!” She picked Esme up and wrapped her remaining arm around Lena's waist. “Bye, love you, Eliza!”
“Love you too, sweetheart.” Eliza shot the hero a semi-remorseful smile.
“Shall we?” Kara whispered, nuzzling her face into Lena’s neck.
“Up, up and away, Supergirl.”
“No fair!” Esme pouted. “I wanna fly tooooo.”
“We’ll talk to your moms about when they get back. Until then, I’m going to be the one who does the flying, okay?”
“Fiiiiiiiiiine. But I get a cookie before bed.” Esme whined. “No, two!”
“Oh, she really is a Danvers.” Lena chuckled, earning a menacing glare from the blonde.
Somehow Kara knew this was going to be a long week.
