Watch Me Fall

Summary:

My collection of Ava/Beatrice ficlets. There will be spoilers for season 2.

Because Beatrice knows that somewhere in between those days at the Cat's Cradle and now — in between the fighting, and training, and running, and saving each other's lives; in the living between the shared tears and shared bed, the fleeting touches and sidelong glances — her mission became less about the Halo and more about Ava.

Notes:

Starting a new collection for Ava/Beatrice in S2 of Warrior Nun. My previous collection started in the era where I was writing for Twitter and they were often so short that it didn't make sense to have a separate chapter for each ficlet. As time goes on I've been tending towards longer pieces, so one per chapter from here on out.

Chapter 1: Preparations

Summary:

In which Ava goes to save the world.

Notes:

This was based off of the first S2 teaser released.

Chapter Text

Ava paces the room in the dark and Beatrice's eyes follow. Beyond the door, there are weapons and armor laid out on the floor, waiting for dawn.  Ava wrings her hands together as she paces, the soft light of the Halo pointing alternately towards and then away from Beatrice.  Around Beatrice's neck, the divinium pendant glows too, increasing in intensity as Ava nears, and then fading again as the Warrior Nun steps further.  The cycle repeats many times, accompanied by a low hum as Ava's nervousness builds.

"You should get some sleep," Beatrice says.

Ava doesn't stop her wandering.  "You should too."

Beatrice reaches out and grabs a hand at Ava's next approach.  "I wish you didn't have to be the one to save the world."

Ava stills then, pulls Beatrice into a hug. And Beatrice tells herself not to cry, not to ruin this moment tonight, which might very well be their last one together.

But Ava squeezes tighter, whispers words that make her weak. "You're the one who made the world worth saving." And Beatrice can't hold the tears that do spill.
