Work Text:

“Hello, Dean.”

The rain thunders down the car windows, a sound very familiar and soothing to Dean. He takes a breath and looks over at his companion.

“Hey, Cas.”

They’re outside of a Denny’s parked in the shadows. Dean fiddles with his bead bracelet.

They’re not meeting in secret, but they’re also not meeting out in the open. He hasn’t snuck past asleep Sam since he was a teenager. It was easy enough.

Now they’re here, sitting in Cas’ stolen 2012 Chevy Impala LT. It’s not the real deal, but being in an Impala’s walls comforts Dean.

Castiel isn’t supposed to be talking to the Winchesters on personal time after they realized he’s been sneaking away. They still do it anyway. Cas will text Dean a time and place.

Dean will get up, get ready, and show up. Most times they just talk. He loves those nights a lot. He’s never enjoyed anybody’s company like he enjoys Cas’.

“How have you been?” Dean scoffs and looks over at Cas, his face glowing orange from the street lamps outside.

He looks over and his eyes meet Dean’s, diamonds in the dark.

“I’ve been okay for the apocalypse. How’ve you been, Cas?”

“Alright. Heaven’s been on very high alert with Lucifer being back.”

“Yeah, sorry about that.” Cas laughs and it melts Dean’s heart.

It shifts into a comfortable silence for a second. Then the angel looks over at him, pupils dilated and tongue running over his lips. These nights are really good too.

Dean shoves himself into Cas’ lap, his back bumping the steering wheel. He ignores it as he brings Cas in for a kiss, his hand caressing his neck.

Cas places his hands under Dean’s shirt, pushing him closer. Dean pulls away to breathe and Cas continues kissing down his jaw. Dean sucks in a deep breath, watching the windows fog from the rain and them. Cas sucks a hickey into his neck and he chuckles softly.

“I missed you.” Cas looks up at him, eyes wide.

He smiles softly, barely just an up quirk of mouth but it makes Dean’s heart flutter in his chest.

“I missed you too, Dean.”

Dean grins and pulls the angel towards him, attaching their mouths together again. Dean sneaks his hand down and starts unbuttoning Cas’ pants.

“Eager?” Cas says, their gravelly voice making Dean shiver.

“Always.” He reaches in and grabs Cas in his hand.

Dean starts stroking and Cas is moaning in his mouth. It’s perfect then there’s a knock at the door.

Dean startles and hits his head on the roof. Cas buttons his pants back up and swallows.

“Cas, who is that? Is it a cop?” Dean blinks against Denny’s bright-lit parking lot.

“No, Dean, it’s far worse.”  He opens the door and Balthazar is standing there, arms crossed against his chest.

“Shit.”

Cas slaps and pushes him to get out of the car. He does and fixes his shirt as Cas climbs out behind him.

“Hello, Lovebirds.” Dean scowls at him and he smiles back.

“Sorry to interrupt.”

Cas looks up at Balthazar with steel blue eyes.

“I assume you’re here to turn me in, brother.” Balthazar raises his eyebrow and chuckles.

“No, Cassie. I would never snitch you out, no matter how bad your taste in humans is.”

Dean flips him and his dumb accent off. Cas turns to him with a stern look and he shrugs.

“Look, I could care less about your affair, but you should be careful, Cassie. If I could find you, the angels won’t be far behind.”

“We’re careful.” Dean objects and Balthazar raises his hands in surrender. Cas speaks up then.

“Then what do you need, Balthazar?”

“I need a tiny favor.” Dean groans and Cas jabs him in the ribs with his elbow.

“I assume in exchange for you not telling?” Cas asks straightforwardly.

“Well, it would give me incentive not to tell, wouldn’t it?”

“What is it, Balthazar?” Dean says annoyed.

“I seem to have lost one of my favorite heavenly weapons.”

“Lost?” Cas pipes up.

“Well, more like stolen by demons.”

Dean pinches the bridge of his nose.

“Jesus, okay, we’ll do your favor, but you better not fucking tell anyone you saw anything, you understand?”

Balthazar makes a zipping gesture in front of his mouth.

“Loud and clear, Lumberjack.” Dean scoffs.

He hands them a piece of paper with an address written on it. Cas grabs it and pockets it.

“I’m pretty sure that’s where they’re hiding. Just knock some heads and grab my weapon.”

“Pretty sure?” Dean questions and Balthazar shrugs.

“You can’t ever be one hundred percent in this game. You guys can get back to Brokeback-Mountaining each other. Good luck, boys.”

Then he disappears with a gust of wind and Dean lets out a noise of frustration. Cas pulls him close and Dean leans into him, pulling him into a hug.

“I wish we could just run away.” Dean mumbles and Cas hugs him tighter, placing a delicate kiss on his neck.

“Just get away from all of this. Get a house with a picket fence. Our own room.” Dean’s thought about it.

He’s liked Cas for a long time before they got together. Ever since they met, it’s like they can’t stay away from each other. He always imagined after the apocalypse, Cas would go off with him and Sam.

“Dean…” They pull away, but Dean keeps his hands on the angel’s waist.

“I know.” He hears in his own voice how sad he sounds and Cas pulls him closer so their foreheads are pressed together.

“You know I wish we could. Never having to say bye, waking up next to you. It’d be very nice.”

Dean chuckles wetly and kisses Cas’ cheek.

“It would be nice.”

They hold each other for a long moment. Dean wishes they could stay like this forever. He and Cas haven’t even been whatever they’ve been for long, but Dean doesn’t think he’ll ever be able to get over Cas.

He’s never felt about anyone the way he feels about Cas like it’s in his soul. They pull back, arms still tangled.

“Wanna get back in the car? Maybe I can show you what would be so great about waking up next to me.”

Dean says sultry, reaching down and palming Cas’ ass. Cas smirks, pulling them towards the backseat.

— —

After, they’re tangled in the backseat, Dean’s head on Cas’ chest with the trench coat laying over them.

Cas is drawing symbols on his arm with his fingers. They lay in silence, enjoying each other.

“Cas?”

He makes a noise of acknowledgment, his fingers making slow movements against his arm.

“After the apocalypse, after everything, if we survive, I wanna go off and get a house somewhere and I, uh, want you to come with me.”

Cas’ fingers stop moving and Dean sucks in a breath, looking up at Cas from his place on his chest. Cas looks down at him, eyes soft.

“Of course, Dean. I want that too.”

Dean reaches up and kisses him delicately. They pull back and Dean smiles against his lips, chest to chest.

“What about the other angels?” Dean asks tentatively.

“Maybe I will become… human.” Dean blinks at him.

“You wanna fall from grace? After seeing what Anna went through?”

Cas wraps his arms around Dean’s shoulders.

“Maybe I won't have to, but if it feels right, I will do it. It wouldn’t be so bad to spend the rest of my life with you, would it?”

Cas says like it’s not the most romantic thing Dean’s ever heard. Maybe they’re going too fast. They’ve only been whatever this is for 3 weeks, but it feels like it’s always been like this. Dean smiles and pecks him on the lips.

“No, it wouldn’t. I clean up after myself.”

Cas chuckles and Dean joins in, making a harmonized sound. They kiss for a little while, just enjoying the press of their lips against each other.

Cas cleans them up and they put their clothes back on. Cas gives him that look and he sighs.

“I know.” Cas kisses him goodnight and it’s chaste and sweet.

Dean climbs out of the car and Cas walks him back to his Impala. Dean climbs in and starts the engine while Cas leans in through his open door.

“See you later, Cas.” Cas’ lips upturn in a small smile.

“See you soon, Dean.”

Dean pulls off and watches Cas through his rearview mirror. He drives back to the motel while the radio plays country music. It isn’t half bad.

He gets out and sneaks in. He shuts it and looks around the room. Sam isn’t even back yet and it’s 5 in the morning. Dean’s gonna have to talk to him.

He sighs and throws his keys on the table, stripping his jacket and shoes off. He goes into the bathroom to brush his teeth and he sees where Cas gave him a very noticeable hickey on the side of his neck.

It’s a bright red, purple bruise and he’s gonna kill Cas. He can’t help it if touches it as he falls asleep.

— —

He wakes up at 9, rubbing his eyes until he sees stars. He sits up and Sam’s bed is empty, but it looks like he slept in it.

There’s a clang from the bathroom and Dean breathes a sigh. He can’t help it, it always relieves him when he knows Sam is safe.

“Mornin’, Sammy.” Sam comes out of the bathroom with a toothbrush in his mouth, toothpaste foam around his mouth like he has rabies.

Dean chuckles as he tries to form a sentence. Sam gestures something and turns around back into the bathroom.

Dean gets up and starts shuffling through his bag, looking for his toothbrush. Sam leaves the bathroom and sits down on his bed behind Dean.

“Morning, Dean.” He says monotone. Dick.

Dean doesn’t say anything more, grabbing his toothbrush and heading toward the bathroom. He sees Sam’s face of confusion and he’s not gonna give him the satisfaction of asking him where he was last night. Not yet.

He brushes his teeth while Sam puts on his shoes. They figured it was a ghost and they have a grave to light up. Dean gets ready and they’re out the door.

They go to the library and figure out the name in some old newspaper clipping. Dean and Sam wait till night, then go dig the grave. They take turns passing the shovel in silence, grunting as each dirt pile gets thrown up.

Dean climbs up and wipes his brow, grabbing the lighter from his pocket. He drops it in the hole and it goes up in flames. Dean looks over at Sam and sighs.

His phone vibrates in his pocket and he checks in silently. It’s Cas. Dean can’t help the excitement that flutters through him. God, he’s so gone.

angelface 11:37pm

Meet me at our place. We have something to get.

Dean smiles and replies something quick.

Dean❤️ 11:38pm

you got it babe

They clean up and head back to the motel. Dean plays his AC/DC cassette and hums to the songs while Sam tries to act like he isn’t humming too.

Nothing will ever make Dean stop loving Sam, but he can’t help the frustration he feels when he looks at him. He shakes the thoughts out and enjoys the familiarity of being with his brother in the Impala, listening to classic rock.

— —

When they get to the motel, Dean does the usual shtick of watching TV and acting like he falls asleep. He closes his eyes and thinks of Cas, slowing his breathing.

Sam tries to be quiet, tiptoeing to grab his shoes. He opens the door and shuts it softly. Dean hears Ruby’s car rev and a car door slam.

He opens his eyes and smiles, grabbing his phone and texting Cas he’ll be on the way soon. He grabs his jacket and his lucky gun, putting it in the waistband of his jeans.

Dean takes the time to put his shoes on in the room. He isn’t the one sneaking out.

He heads out and drives the Impala to the Denny’s down the road. He parks next to Cas’ Impala LT.

Dean jumps out of his car and gets in Cas’. Cas looks over at him with a small smile.

“Hello, Dean.” Dean grins back, pulling into a quick kiss.

“Heya, Cas. Ready to kick some demon ass?”

Cas nods and kisses him again, sweet and slow. Dean grins and pecks him more time before pulling back, buckling his seatbelt.

“Know where to go?” Cas nods and puts his car in reverse.

— —

It’s, of course, an abandoned house down some side road in the middle of some podunk town in Colorado. They pull up and park half a mile away.

Dean gets out and Cas follows suit, walking around to his trunk like a true hunter. He lifts it as Dean walks up. It has a couple of angel blades, some guns, and surprisingly enough, a grenade.

“What the hell do you need a grenade for?”

Cas picks up an angel blade and hands Dean one.

“It’s heavenly. It’s back up.” Dean hums and takes the blade, spinning it in his fingers.

“So what’s the plan?”

Dean asks as Cas closes the trunk, starting to walk toward the house.

“Scope it out, attack, find the weapon,” Cas says simply.

Dean just nods and follows Cas step by step. He grabs at his hand, Cas is hesitant at first because they’re on a mission, but his heart wins and their fingers are intertwined all the way to the house.

They sneak up from behind, peaking through the windows surrounding the house. Cas sees about 7 demons inside. Not an easy run, but Dean knows he and Cas can handle it.

Cas teleports them to an empty bedroom in the back. Cas puts a finger in front of his mouth and Dean rolls his eyes. They let go of each other’s hands so they can grab their weapons.

Cas makes a gesture to go and they tiptoe through the house, killing the first two demons they see. They catch them off guard, but the other 5 come running.

Cas catches the first one, slamming him on the ground and killing him with an angel blade to the chest. The other one tackles him from behind.

Dean can’t worry about it for too long because the other two are on him, trying to stab him with kitchen knives. One punches him in the face and the other sweeps his legs.

He’s on the ground before he knows it. The demon tries to hold down his arms, but he drives the blade into its side. He throws it off him and the other demon slices his arm.

“Fuck!” Dean stabs it in the neck. Dean shoves the body away and checks on Cas.

He’s getting up, shaking the blood off his hand, two dead demons tangled at his feet. Dean smiles at him.

“Easy as pie.” Cas smiles back then he’s back to business.

“We still have to find the weapon.”

They search the house from top to bottom for an hour. Dean sighs as he looks through the cupboards one more time.

“Maybe they have a secret compartment or something?”

Cas hums in acknowledgment and steps on board with a loud creak. Dean scoffs as he moves over tomato soup cans.

“Check that one.” He’s just joking, but Cas lifts up the board and he looks up at Dean with his eyebrow raised. He lifts the sword and Dean grins in triumph.

“And people say I’m the dumb one.”

Cas rolls his eyes and lifts the sword up, gripping it in his hands delicately.

“What is it?” Dean asks as he walks up, admiring the beautiful sword.

“It’s called the Fate-Killing Blade, in simple words.” Dean crosses his arms.

“So it kills Fate?” Cas nods and they head to the front door.

“Don’t we need to clean this up?”

Cas snaps his fingers and it’s gone. Dean kisses his cheek and opens the door.

“You’re such an angel,”

Dean says through his laughs and Cas rolls his eyes. They still hold hands on the walk back to the Impala LT.

— —

Cas calls Balthazar through angel radio as they get close to Denny’s. They pull up, the sign bright with neon yellow and red lights.

Balthazar appears by the car, his scarf blowing in the wind. Dean and Cas climb out of the car, blade in hand.

“That’s one angel blade in exchange for you not tattling on us to the angels,”

Dean says smartly and Cas elbows him in the ribs.

“It’s alright, Cassie. Thank you, boys, I didn’t think you could pull it off. No major damage, eh?”

Dean shows him the slice on his arm. Cas reaches up and heals it before anyone can say anything, fingers wrapped around his wrist.

“Thanks, Cas, you didn’t have to do that-“

“What a romantic gesture! I must be going boys, but thank you truly,” He pauses and looks over at Cas.

“Word of advice, Cassie, you have your sword, try not to die by it. See you around, Bert and Ernie.”

Then he’s gone. Cas looks over at him and Dean smirks.

“Told you Bert and Ernie were gay.” Cas chuckles and Dean pulls him close, kissing him gently.

“We have a few hours left, wanna hang in my Impala? I can show you my Metalica cassette.” Dean offers excitedly and Cas follows him to the car.

“Do you have any Lady Gaga?”

Dean stops in his tracks.

“Lady Gaga?” He says in bewilderment.

“I heard her on the radio while driving my car. I enjoy her music very much.” Dean chuckles in disbelief.

“She ain’t the worst.”

They climb into the backseat and cuddle while listening to Dean’s cassettes. They also make out like teenagers.

Cas’ hand is in Dean’s pants in no time, his mouth pressed against his fiercely. He jerks him off at a quick pace, Dean’s precome making it an easier glide.

“Fuck, Cas,” Dean moans, fingers pulling at Cas’ hair.

“You like that, Dean?” Cas says lowly, all gravel on a back road like it isn’t obvious.

Dean nods anyway, head thrown back against the window. Dean shoves his hand underneath Cas’ shirt, feeling up his chest as Cas strokes him fast and heavy.

He kisses down Dean’s neck, scraping his teeth against his veins, sending shivers down his thighs.

“Cas,” Dean groans, gripping Cas’ hair in his fingers as he comes. Dean barely catches his breath before Cas is on him again, kissing him frantically.

He reaches down as Cas attacks his mouth, unbuttoning his pants and having his hand on his cock in record time. Dean forgot to lick his hand, but he doesn’t need it.

“Dean,” Cas moans sweetly, biting down on Dean’s bottom lip as he fucks into Dean’s hand. Dean swipes his thumb at the head and Cas whines.

Dean can’t help the moan that slips out of his mouth. Cas pulls him into a sloppy kiss.

“You’re so perfect. Right there.” Cas says breathlessly. Dean doesn’t think he can get hard again but he’s getting close.

He jerks Cas off tight and quick for a little longer before he comes all over Dean’s stomach. They kiss for a little while longer, soft, warm, and breathless. Cas pulls back, blue eyes wide like a wolf.

“Did you mean what you said? About after the apocalypse?” Cas asks apprehensively.

Dean puts his hand on his face, curved around his cheek.

“Of course I did. I wouldn’t live with just anybody.” Cas chuckles and kisses him again devoutly.

“I mean it. After everything settles, you wanna get a house somewhere and live a normal human life? No hunting?”

Dean bites his lips and presses down on the cut Cas gave him.

“I’ve been a hunter for a long time, it’s basically everything I know, but after Hell, after everything, I just wanna go somewhere where it’s quiet. Somewhere I can go and feel safe. I’ve never really had that, except for the Impala.”

Dean slaps her door appreciatively. He looks up at Cas who has a frown on his face.

“Cas?”

“I’m sorry you’ve rarely felt safe, Dean. I hope you always feel safe with me because I would do anything to protect you.”

Cas says matter of fact. Dean feels heat rush to his face as he absorbs that. He kisses Cas, wet and desperate.

“I would do anything for you, Cas,” Dean says truthfully.

He feels like he’s known Cas his whole life even though it’s only been two years. Cas kisses him again and he knows it’s a goodnight kiss.

Dean savors it, pressing against his lips, deepening it. Cas tastes like thunderstorms and cheap bubblegum. Cas pulls back, a smile on his face. Dean loves seeing him smile. He does it a lot more these days.

“You want to walk me to my car?” Dean nods and they hold hands as they climb out of the car.

Dean swings their hands as they walk to Cas’ Impala LT. They walk up to the driver's side and Cas turns to him, those intense blue eyes.

“It’s okay. I’ll see you later, yeah?” Cas nods and gets into his car, letting go of his hand at the last possible second.

“I’ll see you very soon, Dean.” Then he’s gone, his car speeding off into the night.

Dean returns to his car and sighs as he puts the keys in the ignition. It doesn’t get easier having to leave Cas. It never does.

— —

When Dean gets to the motel, Sam’s there. He walks in, throws his jacket on the table, and kicks his shoes off. Sam is on the bed, watching TV. He glances over at him, some kind of look in his eye.

“Where have you been?” Dean scoffs.

“You know, I could ask you the same thing.”

Sam scowls at him, arms crossed against his chest.

“I was helping Cas with something.” Sam mumbles something that sounds a lot like “Yeah, I’m sure you did.”

“What is that supposed to mean?” Dean says coldly.

Sam looks over at him, a tiny smirk on his face. Dean wants to punch it off him.

“Nothing.”

“Whatever. I’m going to bed.” Dean sighs and that’s that. He brushes his teeth, throws his pants off, and gets under the cover.

He wraps his hand around his pillow and imagines him and Cas laying next to each other in their own bed in their new house, safe and at peace for once.
