Work Text:

Adam smelled good. It had been the first thing Kaoru had noticed when he’d met him.

He was the second Alpha he had ever met in his life after Kojiro, and that metallic smell, like rust or blood, had struck him as oddly pleasant instead of disgusting. It reminded him of the adrenaline rush he felt when he skateboarded down the side of the abandoned mine, faster and faster, more and more exciting. It was such an Adam smell, intense and peculiar and intriguingly dangerous.

Kaoru was only sixteen when he’d allowed Adam to claim him as his Omega. It had been painful, his sharp teeth had dug into the flesh of the neck until it bled. He couldn't hide the mark even if he wanted to, but it was when his natural cherry blossom scent disappeared and Kaoru started to smell like metal, like Adam, that his parents started to worry. He had shrugged and let them talk, they couldn't prevent him from seeing his mate anyway.

Looking back on that time, Kaoru still called himself stupid at times. He was so involved in Adam’s fantasy, in his desire to be free and brave and divine . Adam had intoxicated him, not just with the smell but with his own being.

Then they’d grown apart. It had been gradual, almost imperceptible, Adam was obsessed with this absurd idea of finding his ‘Eve’ and was getting angrier and more reckless. People had started to get hurt while beefing him, and instead he was getting less interested every day. Then when his mark had disappeared from Kaoru's neck and his original scent had started to reappear, instead of renewing it, he’d dumped him. Kaoru wasn't his Eve, why would he keep him?

He had cried at the time, but now when he thought about it it almost made him shiver. It was absurd how much Adam's spell had clouded his brain. And it wasn't just the natural attraction between Alphas and Omegas, Kaoru was certain that he would have been able to trap him anyway.

Even today, when he tried to place two fingers on his neck where Adam's bite mark once stood, he still almost had in his nose that dark and dangerous smell of blood.
