Chapter Text
Excerpt from Daiya no A: The Seidou Saga. Originally played by Sawamura Eijun, one day before his death. Transcript.
You see as the prince steps towards you, bathed in the light of the first full moon in 100 years. He tosses a grin towards you, more genuine than the others you’ve seen before…
With a gasp from the crowd, full of the judgemental students you’ve grown accustomed to these past three years, you see the prince sully his pristine white suit as he kneels in front of you.
“Ei-chan… Will you marry me?”
>Yes, Kazuya-kun!
Of course, Kazuya-kun!
I love you, Kazuya-kun!
You jump into his arms and he twirls you around. Raucous applause picks up as you kiss under the moonlight, a sign of your destined love.
Eijun clutches at his console, staring at the sweet ending scene between the main character, nicknamed Ei-chan, and Miyuki Kazuya, the crown prince of the Seidou Kingdom, from the titular otome game Daiya no A: The Seidou Saga.
Silently, he turned off the game, got ready for bed, and laid down on his stomach with the lights out. Only after being fully bundled up in his blankets, with his face pushed far into two pillows, did he speak.
“WHAT WAS THAT????? AGH!!! I CAN’T BELIEVE EI-CHAN ENDED UP WITH THAT TANUKI BASTARD!!!!!! WHERE DID I GO WRONG??????”
He continued on like that into the next day, where he got berated for looking like he had been dumped.
I might as well have…
Miyuki Kazuya! Curse you!
Daiya no A: The Seidou Saga was a very popular otome game, following the story of the MC (who the player got to nickname) as they attend Seidou Academy, the prestigious school for nobility, despite being a commoner. The MC would go on to meet the eclectic personalities of the school, all the while learning about magic and battling for their spot amongst students who didn’t think they deserved to be there.
Daiya no A: The Seidou Saga had won countless awards in Japan, as well as some overseas. Even people who weren’t fans of otome games found themselves enjoying the colorful cast, witty dialogue, and beautiful art style.
DnA was considered innovative not only for the open-world aspect, which would see being able to explore the world in its beautiful wholeness and discover hidden lore, but also the relationships displayed in it, with the player able to set up a variety of side ships or help characters discover their sexuality. Depending on what character route the player chose, DnA allowed for the player to break down (and even dismantle) the screwed up systems prevalent in its world, such as the aristocracy or speciesism towards hybrid characters. DnA was also written with a gender neutral MC, which prompted a reassessment in the otome game community about how gendered the game could be. Although others were quick to point out the fact that all of the capture targets were men, despite the rich female cast.
Eijun hadn’t known any of that before purchasing Daiya no A, however. No, he had taken one look at the character on the cover and gotten his debit card out to pay. No matter how bad the game was, he knew he would be willing to sit through it just to see that character on his screen.
He remembered being surprised that the cashier was so casual about him buying it, as he was used to getting weird looks or being asked if he was doing a chore for his girlfriend. He shrugged it off, though, figuring that times were changing and a man could now buy an otome game without being subtly judged.
It wasn’t until he made it home that Eijun realized the character he had bought the game for was displayed on the back cover, not the front. No, the front was filled with various other ikemen, although all of them seemed to pale in comparison to the beauty on the back cover. In fact, some of them rubbed Eijun wrong, like the character who was at the front and center, who he later found out was the crown prince (and most popular character route).
After booting up the game, Eijun was quickly pulled into the complex world of DnA, which seemed to keep all the best parts of otomes without any of the hair-pulling ones. He fell in love with all the characters he met and their individual struggles, from the second son of the Kominato family, who was struggling to figure out his role in the world since he wouldn’t inherit the title of marquis, to the awkward but charming foreign exchange student Furuya Satoru, who ends up being the kidnapped heir to a dukedom.
Daiya no A was also known for its unique game design. Rather than having multiple saves, the game only allowed the players to have a single save at a time, and would fully delete a save after you loaded the game back up. While initially a turn-off to people, it became clear that the game designers wanted to keep the otome game as linear as real-life, with every decision being final. Of course, you had the option of just restarting the game if you got an ending you disliked, or if you made a mistake you absolutely couldn’t live with, but the fandom generally discouraged starting over due to mistakes.
Eijun went into the game with the intent to experience it fully, without any guides for the routes. For him, otome games were all about genuine first experiences, not playing to maximize rewards. He only played his other otome games once before, preserving the sanctity of his experience. For him, Daiya no A would be no different.
Luckily, it only took a few in-game weeks to meet his (literal) prince charming from the back cover: Takigawa Chris Yuu, 1st prince and second heir to the throne of the Seidou Kingdom, and magical tutor to the MC.
Takigawa, or “Chris-senpai,” was quite different from how Eijun imagined he would be. That didn’t stop him from constantly hanging out with him though, even when his stats were far above the requirement for the level. The game devs didn’t seem to have crafted a lot of dialogue for him, as he was (supposedly) just a character to help you boost your stats, but Eijun didn’t mind. Where other players would groan over the lack of skippable cutscenes, where Chris and the MC would be shown studying into the night, Eijun always treasured them.
Of course, Eijun didn’t neglect the other characters’ routes. On the contrary, he made sure to do his best to max out every side characters’ storyline. After all, Eijun never stopped believing that if he maxed out every route, perhaps… he could unlock a secret.
I mean, no way the makers would waste such a beautiful character design…
Chris-sama! Just you wait! I’ll unlock your hidden route!
Unfortunately for him, it seemed that he had unknowingly completed Miyuki Kazuya’s love route instead, whose ending saw Chris moving to the countryside as Miyuki became King and you became his partner.
“I DON’T EVEN GET TO KNOW WHERE HE MOVED?”

Summary: You find yourself growing closer to Chris as he leads you through your magic lessons. Despite his cold attitude, you can’t help but want to mend his and Miyuki’s relationship.
This causes some problems when they both confess to you on the same day.
…
“I’m sorry, Chris-senpai,” you say. “I just… I don’t feel the same way about you.” Chris’ face, fully of earnest hope, seemed to dim.
“Do you have somebody else?” he asks. His face looks like he knows the answer.
“I… ” You hesitate to continue, but this only seems to confirm Chris’ thoughts.
“That’s alright. I… understand.” He starts to turn away, but stops for a second. “I hope he makes you happy.”
He does, you think. “I hope you can find someone who makes you happy, too,” you say.
Chris doesn’t reply.

What a beautiful story! However, could you consider tagging Takigawa Chris Yuu/MC as unrequited, or add the Unrequited Love tag?

I feel you. I’ve been trying since the game came out to unlock his romance route. I’m beginning to lose hope that it actually exists…
MiyukiStan OP
I’m starting to believe that all the people who looked into the code to confirm it were just screwing with us and it doesn’t actually exist.
kazuyapologist
i think the game devs created miyuki kazuya’s advisor route just to fuck with us. there is no other reason. why is it easier to romance amahisa kousei, a character who shows up halfway through the second act, while miyuki’s romance route is so hard that we may not even know it exists???
otomehime
they anticipated his popularity and decided to watch the fandom burn

LOL I remember the first time I got the advisor ending, I nearly threw my Switch across the room when I got to the second screenshot.

Here, here.
“Ei-chan, you can’t just take time off work because of a video game,” Wakana says over the phone. Eijun huffs back at her, pouting childishly even though she can’t see him.
“I just! How am I supposed to focus when all I can think about is that bastard’s smirk! GAH!” he yells. A nearby mother shoots him a nasty look, and he quickly bows, shouting out an even louder apology. The nearby shop owners, accustomed to his attitude, only laugh.
“If you’re so invested in this game maybe I should pick it up,” Wakana says, ignoring his theatrics. “Personally, I think that Miyuki character is quite good-looking… ”
“Not you too, Wakana,” he says. “You can’t be tricked by his handsome looks! Not as handsome as Chris-sama, of course… ”
“Oi, Sawamura, your break’s almost over!” his coworker yells.
“Ah, I gotta go, Wakana!”
“Alright, I’ll talk to you later, Ei-chan. Be careful on your way home!”
“I will, I will! I’ve gotta hurry home and restart my save file… ”
Guide to Beating Miyuki’s (Advisor) Route
by World’s Best Otome Gamer
Hi all! I’ve been getting so many requests to do a walkthrough guide on our beloved Prince Miyuki’s route from Daiya no A: The Seidou Saga.
Oh boy. You guys really wanted me to suffer this time! This was probably the hardest walkthrough guide I’ve ever done, and it included hiring a computer scientist to go into the game code to explain it to me. (The things I do for y’all.)
Truth be told, I was hesitant to do this not just due to the difficulty, but because of how much of a lowkey downer his route is. I mean, it’s not even his romance route! We literally end up being his advisor. I wanted to do his romance route, but… that was even harder to figure out. So, apologies, but this is just a guide to his platonic/friendship/advisor route.
Regardless, he’s not the most popular character for no reason, and I know so many of you have been pulling your hair out trying to figure out how to make our cold and snarky prince even just spend time with us. So, at the very least you’ll know you’re going to spend the rest of your life with him. Just, as his royal advisor.
While I usually try to keep my guides beginner-friendly with only minor spoilers, I quickly realized how impossible that would be. I know many people bought DnA for Miyuki-sama, so I really wanted to preserve story spoilers, but this route is too dependent on certain answers that keeping it to minor spoilers could cause problems.
So here’s your official warning for spoilers! Also, if you haven’t realized it yet, this guide is very, very in-depth. You will become frustrated. You will rage quit when the RNG isn’t in your favor. You will cry.
But it’s a small price to pay for perhaps the most satisfying ending for our beautiful Miyuki-sama!

REQUIREMENTS
These are either events or continuous decisions that will make or break Miyuki’s route. While I focused on the five most important, just assume every decision listed in the walkthrough itself is there for a reason. Because it is. But these are the things that have the biggest effect on Miyuki’s route, and not doing them will make completing his route almost or fully impossible.
- You MUST choose to become a support mage. While this decision happens on Day 16, I feel like it’s necessary to know prior to even entering Seidou. Support mages are the most frustrating class you can choose in the game, as they require a lot of stats which are largely useless for everything else. It also causes the game to give you greater requirements to pass exams, which makes the fifth requirement very, very hard. Also, almost every stat must have 1 more point than usual, with the exception of KND (+2 points), MAG (+2), LCK (+0), and ATK (-1) to prevent forced magic tutoring. This means you’ll have to learn how to carefully manage your days to ensure your stats are up-to-par.
- You MUST be late for orientation on Day 3. Deciding to wake up early opens up about half of Miyuki’s encounters, making his route a lot easier. Becoming closer with Kuramochi is also highly beneficial. While it’s possible not being late would still allow you to begin his route, as there’s nothing in the code to suggest it’s an automatic dead-end, nobody has been able to figure out how to. So, just make sure to bond with Kuramochi and Masuko on Day 2 and choose the option to try and sneak into the orientation.
- You MUST max out Kuramochi’s friendship route before Act 1 Semester 2. Kuramochi is Miyuki’s closest friend, so becoming close with him will cause Miyuki to trust you slightly more. There’s also a necessary event at the beginning of Semester 2 which can only occur if you’ve maxed out Kuramochi’s friendship route. (Just be careful to not trigger his romance route, which is frustratingly easy to do.) Also, Kuramochi’s route will unlock many benefits, such as occasionally hanging out in Miyuki’s room or being invited to the Kuramochi family home between Act 1 and 2. Maxing this out ASAP should be one of your main priorities.
- You MUST make it onto the Student Council before or on Day 54. Council meetings are the most important events to further your relationship with Miyuki. They also allow you to have at least one set time to talk to Miyuki, whose schedule is one of the most frustrating parts of his route. (I mean, I get that it’s more realistic for the crown prince to be constantly busy, but I JUST WANT TO TALK TO HIM.)
- Lastly, DO NOT HANG OUT WITH PRINCE CHRIS. AND I MEAN IT. Under absolutely no circumstances. If hanging out with Kuramochi will increase your relationship with Miyuki, hanging out with Chris will absolutely destroy it. NOT EVEN CHRIS’ ADDED STAT BOOSTS ARE WORTH IT. DO NOT HANG OUT WITH HIM. Once again, this means spending a lot of time in the library to prevent forced magic tutoring, since, remember, you’ll also be on the support mage path. Woo!
…
GENERAL ADVICE
- Answer smartly. The best answers for Miyuki will always be the ones that match his vibe: sassy while still being respectful. Try to avoid any type of obnoxious answer or any answer that seems disrespectful. They will almost always worsen your relationship. Also, never, never rat him out if you find some blackmail on him. It’ll make him hate you. He values discretion in his friends.
- Focus on increasing your CHM, MAG, and INT. Miyuki seems to value people who are talented and intelligent, so try to focus on these stats. This is yet another thing that makes his route hard, since CHM, MAG, and INT are all great for a Psychic or Enchanting build, but you have to choose the support mage path, which focuses on entirely different stats.
- If given the option, talk about him with everyone you meet. This will unlock crucial dialogue options later on, allowing you to grow closer with him and not waste any encounters. While many characters will require you to become closer with them to give you useful information, it’s definitely worth it (and also required).
- Keep his schedule somewhere. Yes, seriously, I’m saying you need to keep track of his schedule like you’re playing Stardew Valley or like you’re an overprotective girlfriend. Unlike every other character, Miyuki is available on seemingly random days (which can also be dependent on RNG). Only council meetings are a set time to see him, and those are only twice a month. You need to make sure you don’t miss any chances to see him.

(surrounded by knives) okay okay so hear me out…
truth be told, i was looking forward to this video essay, as i thought it would be pretty straightforward. however, as i delved deeper into the lore of the seidou royal family and the relationship between miyuki and chris, i started to come across some… interesting inconsistencies. i hope i’ll be able to make you reassess the relationship between the two princes by the end of the video!
thank you for watching, and don’t forget to subscribe!

How does this explain that one line from Miyuki when you mention Chris to him during Act 1 Semester 2? “Don’t mention that name while we’re together.” Is that not superrrr hostile?

Replying to @Prince Miyuki-Sama while this may be a stretch, i think you could take it as miyuki being careful about what other people hear them talking about. during that scene, mc and miyuki are in the hallways, with students passing by, which could mean that miyuki was warning you to not speak about chris w/ him to avoid awkward situations

okay but you bring up good points????? why does miyuki defend chris when mc mentions being bored by their study sessions???? i guess you could say that it’s ambiguous, since he specifically says “you should take every chance to grow.” he could just be reprimanding you for being lazy, but… hm.

Replying to @dontspeaktome i feel like he was more implying that mc shouldn’t badmouth royalty more than anything. i mean, chris may not be the crown prince, but he’s still a prince.

Replying to @lovergalla I agree, Miyuki is known for preferring people to be respectful, even when someone else doesn’t deserve it. He prefers more psychological warfare than outright fighting.

Let it be known that Eijun was far smarter than people gave him credit for.
Sure, he’ll never be clever, with witty comebacks or unthought of solutions to problems, but he had a good sense for emotions. A lot of that probably came from his family, which unlike many Japanese households was never afraid to confront emotions head-on. Some of it might’ve been from his years of being a shoujo fan, which taught him how to pick up on certain social cues.
Of course, his emotional intelligence served him well whenever he would play otome games. He was never afraid to answer as himself, wanting to see how the game would react to his personality. Most of the time this worked out well, and Eijun generally ended up with the ending that suited him best.
Daiya no A was perhaps the first otome game he had played that made him want to tear his hair out in frustration with its ending. Eijun had been largely devoted to spending time with Chris, who slowly opened up to him over the course of the story, despite not being a capture target. (Trust him, he spent all of the night before asking online if there was anything in the code to suggest that he had a hidden route.)
For some reason, the game seemed intent on pushing encounters with Miyuki Kazuya onto him, even when he’d choose to spend time with other characters. He’d decide to hang out with Kuramochi only for the older boy to invite them over to the prince’s quarters. He’d go out to the town to help out at the orphanage and end up running into Miyuki sneaking off from his duties. Sometimes, he’d just be minding his own business, and it would somehow trigger a whole new cutscene.
So, sure, Eijun wasn’t the smartest person out there, but he was certainly smart enough to pick up on the clues that he was on Miyuki’s romance route.
Didn’t mean he was just going to sit back and allow it to happen, though.
Whenever Miyuki appeared, Eijun chose the option that seemed to piss the prince off most. At first, it wasn’t deliberate, with Eijun just choosing the option that spoke to him. It was clear that their personalities clashed, with every single encounter ending in the two characters being frustrated. Yet somewhere in the middle of Act 1, Semester 2, it seemed like Miyuki was becoming more and more amused by his answers than anything else.
By the time he made it to Act 2, Eijun was close to pulling his hair out. Chris had graduated from the Academy already, meaning he could only hang out with him on the weekends. While this gave him a lot more time to bond with some of the new characters (like Okumura Koushuu, the tsundere prince from a neighboring country), he couldn’t seem to shake Miyuki. Worse yet, his answers no longer annoyed the prince, and even started to raise their relationship level.
Eijun was thinking all about this as he started on his way home. So caught up in thought about how he could avoid Miyuki’s route, and hopefully uncover the hidden route that he just knew had to exist (despite what the internet said), that he didn’t hear the warnings from other pedestrians until it was too late.

You turn around, swinging your arm out in an attempt to hit the person.
A hand grasps your wrist instead, pulling your body flush against their own, with your face pressed against a muscled chest. Instinctually, you take a breath in, and the scent of pine needles fills your nose.
What do you do?
Say “Who are you?”
>Say “What do you think you’re doing?!”
Attempt to get away.
Nothing.
“What do you think you’re doing?!” you scream, blushing furiously. Your voice is muffled by his chest and despite yourself, you can’t help but notice that the mysterious man’s hold is very secure.
“What do you think you’re doing,” Prince Miyuki asks. “I’m pretty sure this is a private garden, Ei-chan~” He smirks at you, lifting your chin up.
“Although, perhaps you were hoping to run into a charming prince?”
“Perhaps I was.”
“Sorry, I didn’t know this was a private garden.”
>“What ‘charming prince?’”
“No way in hell!”
“What ‘charming prince?’” you ask. “All I see is a lurking creep.”
Miyuki laughs, finally releasing you. He keeps a warm hand around your waist, though, and begins to lead you through the garden.
“But seriously, you’re lucky it was me who found you,” he says. “If it had been one of the servants you might’ve been seriously punished.”
You duck your head.
You two continue to walk in companionable silence, examining the beautiful flowers and plants present. The moonlight seems to perfectly highlight everything in the garden, including your walking partner.
Eventually, Prince Miyuki stops in a secluded corner which, unlike the rest of the garden, is filled with common plants in the Seidou countryside. It seems to be less perfectly-designed than the other parts of the garden, with
“My father said he created this garden after meeting my mother,” Prince Miyuki says. “Apparently, he had stumbled upon her selling flowers in the streets, and fell in love instantly.”
He begins to weed the garden beds, uncaring of the dirt.
“He always told me there was something special about the flowers we see everyday, more so than the ones we collect. When I turned fourteen he gifted this garden to me.”
He continues, “I loved to hide out here when the stares of other’s got too much for me to take. It was like my own little world, a piece of the life I could’ve had with my mother, full of flowers not even good enough to be displayed out in the open.”
“It’s beautiful… ”
“Thanks for telling me.”
“I always loved common flowers, too.”
>Start to weed.
You bend over next to him and begin to weed the garden beds as well. Prince Miyuki stares at you in surprise. “You don’t have to do that,” he says.
After a moment, “Not that I can ever get you to do something you don’t want to.”
Answer sincerely.
Make a joke.
>Play along.
[This option is hidden]
“It’s like when we first met,” you say. Prince Miyuki laughs, a melodic sound that cuts through the quiet of the garden.
“I think you were the first person in a long time to call me out so brazenly,” he says. “I’m sure if Kuramochi had heard you call me by my full name he would’ve lost it.”
He smiles at you, straightening up from where he had finished weeding. “When I was a child, my mother used to use the same tone with me, you know? I was just her kid back then, not a magical prodigy, not a prince… I was just her little Kazuya.” He gazes at the flowers, caressing the petals of one.
“I think I’d like it if you called me that,” he says.
“Called you what?”
“You want me to call you Kazuya?”
“Kazuya-kun… ”
>“I’ll stick with Prince.”
“I’ll stick with Prince,” you say cheekily. After a moment, Kazuya’s smile grows wider.
“Not even my father calls me Kazuya,” he says. “I took my mother’s last name, after all. So don’t feel embarrassed about it.”
“I’m not!” you say, although you can feel your cheeks heating up.
“It’s okay if it takes a bit. I’ll wait.”
He moves towards you and circles his arms around your waist. He pushes your foreheads together and you both close your eyes, enjoying the tranquility of the moment. As he holds you, he starts to hum a common children’s lullaby that your mother used to sing to you.
Eijun stared at the floating screen in front of him in confusion, waving his arms around like it would cause the hallucination to disappear.

Eijun turns to observe his surroundings, taking in the cheap but comfy bed he’s sitting up in, the side table with a single sunflower on it, the dresser in the corner, and the desk with an opened letter on it.
He doesn’t need to get up to read the letter. He’s pretty sure he knows what it says.

While I’m disappointed there won’t be a sequel, I agree with what one of the game developers mentioned in the original statement: It just wouldn’t have felt the same. Glad they’re trying to keep the artistic integrity of the franchise.

“Sawamura, just notice that you missed today’s shift. Since you haven’t missed a shift before without notice I figured I’d call you, but I also know you can be pretty scatterbrained. Luckily today wasn’t too busy, but please let me know why you missed it if you can. If you’re sick I hope you feel better soon.”

“Hi honey! I haven’t talked to you in awhile. I just got a phone call from Tokyo to come to a police station for you. You better not be in trouble, you hear? But they did mention you weren’t in holding so… Did you need some kind of legal help? Anyway, we’ll be seeing you in a bit. By the way, did you happen to… ”

“Hey, Kid! Your mom and I are on the train to come see you. You know, would it kill you to call your parents first once in a while? At least you tend to answer when we call… You know Nobu-kun always answers his parents' calls? We heard from him and Wakana-chan that you haven’t been answering their texts or calls, either. Is everything okay? If you need any help… ”
