Chapter Text
Dobby froze in shock when he felt a change in Mr. Harry Potter sir’s magic. He’d been monitoring it closely this summer after the scare last year when he’d been seriously injured. He would not allow his Mr. Harry Potter sir to be hurt again, no matter what Mr. Harry Potter sir said about leaving it be. Dobby was a free elf, and could choose to protect Mr. Harry Potter sir if he wished, and there was nothing he could do about it unless he bonded to Dobby.
Dobby was a Good Elf, and he would ensure his Mr. Harry Potter sir was safe, no matter what.
He considered the magical change for a moment, then his eyes widened. His Mr. Harry Potter sir was now a dragel.
He had known his Mr. Harry Potter sir was a great wizard, but he hadn’t expected him to be one of the great ones. Dragels were well-known among house elves because they always accepted anyone, even free elves who wished to leave the wizarding world. They didn't even consider being sacked to be a bad thing, they wanted all house elves to be free. Dobby had considered trying to find a way to Nevarah, but he hadn’t wanted to leave his Mr. Harry Potter sir. Now, it seemed he wouldn’t have to choose. He could take Mr. Harry Potter sir to Nevarah where he’d be safe from the evil plans of bad old Dumbles.
He considered his options. The only one he was sure could be trusted with his Mr. Harry Potter sir and would know how to get to Nevarah was Miss Luna Lovegood miss. She was fae, and close to Harry. If they went there, Dobby would be with his Mr. Harry Potter sir, but Miss Luna Lovegood was also a trouble magnet. She’d need an elf with her to make sure she was safe.
Winky, he decided, would be perfect. Hogwarts wasn’t enough for her, but Miss Luna Lovegood was her favorite student and would be a strong connection for her. Even if they didn’t make an official bond, it should be enough to get her over her binge-drinking habits.
He nodded to himself and popped away to Winky.
Once he was done explaining his plan, he left her packing their things and heading over to Mr. Harry Potter sir’s house to pack his things and prepare. He’d get Miss Luna Lovegood miss and her things, and meet her there. From there, they’d go wherever they needed to go to get to Nevarah.

Luna smiled as Dobby appeared in her bedroom. This was one of the less likely possibilities she’d foreseen, but one she had been hoping for all the same. She knew she’d end up very happy with this path, even though the route would be quite strange and complicated. Despite it being unlikely, she’d prepared for it. She'd even made a mess in her usually neat room, because she knew how much house elves liked cleaning and being useful.
She waited patiently as Dobby explained his plan, despite already knowing it. Once he was done, she explained "The veil of death in the department of mysteries doesn't necessarily lead to death. It is a test and a portal all in one. The impure of heart can't pass, and will die, but those pure of heart, spirit, and intent will arrive safely in Nevarah."
She smiled at Dobby's excited reaction. "We must be going now, miss! We must get Mr. Harry Potter sir and Winky and go through the veil of death before the ministry opens!"
She nodded happily. "As soon as my things are packed and I write a note for my father I will be ready."
Dobby bobbed his head rapidly, making his ears flop wildly. "Dobby is being packing Miss Luna Lovegood miss's things. Miss Luna Lovegood miss should start her note."
She nodded, fetching parchment and a quill and writing a short note. She didn't need more as she'd informed her father before he left of this possibility. It was the reason she'd stayed home instead of accompanying him.
It didn't take either of them long to complete their tasks, and they were soon on their way to Harry's house.
She gasped in surprise and she took in his condition and room. She'd known his relatives treated him poorly and seen his room in her visions many times, but it was different to see it in real life. Harry's current physical condition was even worse. He was unconscious, and his back was covered in blood. His wings hadn't grown in yet, but they were starting to push through a little bit. She winced. They'd need to get going so the wings didn't burst out into view in the middle of the ministry.

Winky sighed softly as they got off the elevator at the bottom level of the ministry. She couldn't believe she'd agreed to something so impulsive, but Dobby had been insistent that it was necessary.
The three of them hurried down the long, reflective corridor towards the department of mysteries, Harry floating along behind them on Dobby’s spell. She was somewhat surprised when they reached the door unscathed and entered a room full of doors. She gasped in shock and fear when the room suddenly started spinning, leaving them with no way of knowing where they'd come from.
Miss Luna Lovegood appeared unconcerned, however, walking towards a door confidently and opening it. She stepped through, and immediately fell to the ground, spasming uncontrollably. Winky gasped in horror, and Dobby squeaked in shock. They ran forward, checking on Luna hurriedly.
“I is not being knowing what this is,” Dobby wailed, twisting his ears.
Winky glared at him. “You is being very impulsive Dobby. You is better be being hoping that the dragels know how to fix Miss Luna Lovegood or you is being in big trouble.”
Dobby nodded. “She is clearly knowing where to go, the veil is being here.”
Winky nodded considered the veil. “We should be all holding onto each other. I will be holding Miss Luna Lovegood and Mr. Harry Potter on this side, you will be holding on that side.”
Dobby nodded, obeying without hesitation.
They shifted towards the veil, the two house elves awkwardly shuffling the two unconscious and injured wizards between them.
“Is Dobby being completely sure about this?” Winky asked, wanting confirmation one last time before jumping into the veil of death with her two favorite wizards and best friend.
Dobby nodded. “This is what Miss Luna Lovegood is being saying. Jump in the veil, and if you is being good, you is going to Nevarah.”
Winky nodded. Her being good was debatable, after all, she was sacked. But Nevarah didn’t consider that a flaw, so hopefully their portal wouldn’t either.
They’d find out soon, she decided, as they did a strange shuffle jump sideways into the veil.
