Work Text:
Ludwig twisted the ring around his finger over and over, the shining gold caught the light and the intricate carvings felt nice under his fingertips. The motion was soothing, rhythmic, helping to calm his racing anxieties. He still couldn’t believe it had finally happened, that he was married. The first in his siblings, and not only that to the love of his life. And not only that but to the King of Hearts. He should have long since adjusted to the shell-shock, after all they had been dating for a few years before this, but this felt so much more real.
He used to never think about it. To Ludwig, he was just Matteo. A loud and proud Heartian man who loved to sing, dance, take walks in the garden and make a problem of himself to the royal court. After all these years it was easy to forget he was King. But now it was something he couldn’t ignore. So much to learn, and so little time. He was being instructed on everything when it came to being in the Heartian court. He was no longer a mountain dwelling Spadian, who worked under the Spadian council and at his mother’s bakery on the side… He was a royal court member, the Queen of Hearts--
He learned very quickly that, experienced he may be in the wilderness, but the royal court was a jungle he had no knowledge in. He was lost, but a babe in the woods left alone in the dark, and scrambling to catch up. His brother would tease him a lot about if he could handle everything, but honestly? He let most of it slide off his back.
Because every morning, he got to wake up to the man he loved. He could kiss his sun soaked skin and trace and make patterns of the freckles on his cheeks. He could hold his hand, dance in their room together. And no matter how busy and hectic everything had become, at the end of the day, they would have time for each other. The price of royalty was steep, but Ludwig would pay it back in interest if it meant that he could continue to wake to that sight.
He kissed the ring on his finger gently, before turning over, and brushing the brunet’s hair out of his face.
“My love, it’s time to wake up…”
Matteo whined, and buried his face into Ludwig’s shoulder, pulling him close.
“No… don’ wanna…”
Ludwig laughed, and curled into him as well. He’d give the man a few more minutes.
