Harry had never been to a magic concert. He and Ron had gone to plenty Quidditch games since graduation and Hermione had managed to drag him to one or two magical museums, but he'd never been to a magic concert. He barely payed attention to who sang what on the radio. The closest thing to it had been the Weird Sisters playing at the Yule Ball in Hogwarts; and that had been the closest thing he'd been to any concert at all.
A few weeks ago, Ginny had invited the three of them to attend the Wixen Pride in the Scottish Highlands. It was their first time and Hermione had told them about the muggle ones, but that did little to prepare them for Wixen Pride. They'd arrived by portkey the same morning and spent the day putting up their tent and preparing an early dinner before the inauguration that same evening. As soon as they'd finished dinner, Ginny had produced a make-up bag out of seemingly thin air filled to the brim with glitter in different colours. According to her, one could not attend Pride without it. Harry sat patiently as she applied a generous amount of green glitter on his cheekbones. She herself put it on her eyelids, cheekbones, lips and hair in all the shades of the rainbow. Hermione went for golden glitter on her eyelids and hair and Ron got something that looked more like Quidditch face-paint across the face in magenta, purple and blue. Ginny then declared them Pride-ready and poured them each a shot of firewhisky.
They made their way through the sea of tents on the field, with people dancing, lounging about, eating, drinking and putting on make-up. Sean, Seamus, Luna and a whole bunch of strangers joined them as they entered the festival area on their way to the main stage. Stages and tents where being prepped for the festivities but everyone moved in unison towards the top of the cliff where a gigantic stage was set up. Harry was awed of the crowds outfits and make-up and the feeling of expectancy building up in his gut. The sun started to slowly sink behind the horizon and orbs of lights in rainbow colours floated up towards the sky, bathing them in red, green and blue and reflecting off of all the glitter. Hermione was telling them something about the orbs, but Harry was too busy trying to look at everywhere at once.
He was brought out of his thoughts when the crowd started cheering as the same kind of orbs floated above the stage and turned into sharper spotlights, turning to shine the path of someone walking out on stage.
"Come on, let's get closer!" Ginny said and started pulling them in through the crowd. They managed to find a good enough spot and Harry could now get a closer look at the person on stage: she was short, black with big black hair down to her thighs. She wore a pink metallic corset with a matching skirt and thigh-high boots in the same material. On her lips she wore red glitter and there were flickering silver stars and butterflies magicked onto her black curls.
"Witches, wixens and wizards!" She called out and the crowd cheered again. "I am Nyx and I want to welcome each and every one of you to the 4th Wixen Pride!"
At this, the crowd erupted into such a long cheer that it seemed it'd go on forever, but she gestured to the band joining her on stage and the drummer picked up a deep, slow beat.
"This one is called Imagine" she said and began singing in a sweet, breathy voice.
The crowd started moving to the beat at once and Harry was pulled into it almost as if in a trance. She stood probably 20 meters away and still Harry could hear her clear as if she were standing right in front of him. He felt Ginny laughing beside him and put an am around her as they swayed side to side, Luna hugging her from the other side. Ron and Hermione were snogging and Seamus and Sean danced with their arms around each other. He felt his chest filled to the brink with... Something. Just about to overflow.
"Why can't you," Nyx sang, her eyes closed and hands raised to the sky. "Imagine the world like that. Imagine a world..."
Everyone sang along and even Harry joined when Nyx sang Can you? And everyone began singing back Imagine. As the song built up, she put a hand against her ear and made a sound like the chirping of a bird. And before he even had the chance to process that, the song was over and the crowd was yet again erupting in a deafening cheer.
So, no. Harry had never been to a magic concert before and right before the band began strumming the second song he had a second to wonder... How could he have missed out on this? This was one of the most magical experiences of his life, and he'd had a few of those.
He was quickly pulled back to the concert by the change of light. The floating orbs above the crowd turned from a soft glow to laser lights and pointed towards the sky, making beautiful patterns as everything beneath went darker and he could only make out the faces of his friends by their shining glitter. As the next beat began - quicker, like heartbeat? - the laser lights started moving and glittery smoke began spreading between their legs.
"I'm so into you, I can barely breathe..." Nyx began singing as she walked from one side of the stage to the other, the crowd singing along to every word. "And all I wanna do is to fall in deep..."
Beside him, Ginny turned to dance with a stranger from the crowd and Luna joined them. Harry joined Ron and Hermione. It was more of a jumping up and down than dancing, but no one was watching him anyway.
"So come light me up!" The choir sang as Nyx responded: "So come light me up, my baby."
"Little dangerous!"
"A little dangerous, my baby..."
Then as soon as that song ended, the melody for the next one began and the smoke turned red. The lasers turning to strobing lights and a couple of silver-haired dancers joined Nyx on stage.
"Wixen Pride! You still with me?!" Nyx yelled as the melody got louder.
"YES!" Everyone including Harry, yelled back.
"We're here! We're queer!" She yelled and cupped her hand behind an ear, expecting a response.
"We're here! We're queer!" They parroted back.
"Anytime I'm alone I can't help thinking about you..." Her melodic voice began. The lights shifted to pink and turquoise bubbles began to fall as everyone went back to dancing.
And so it went for another two songs. Every time Harry felt like he was about to catch up - to what, exactly, he didn't know - the song ended and the next began. Ginny had somehow gotten them beers and he drank it down gratefully, not realising until then how parched he was. During one of the slower songs, Charlie managed to find them. He hugged the others first, then got to Harry when he'd finished his beer.
"Heya, Harry." He shouted - barely audible - and gave him a quick hug, then did a double-take. "You look kind of high. Are you high?"
"I've never been to a concert before." Harry shouted back.
"That explains it." Charlie said and laughed.
And just like that, Harry was pulled back to the magic on stage.
"For this next song I want to invite a dear friend of mine. He's here, he's queer and we recently wrote a song together and I can't wait to share it with you!" Nyx said. "Wixen Pride! I want you to welcome... Drake!"
The guitarist began playing a soft riff and the drums picked up. All lights but the one spotlight turned blue and moved as if through liquid. On stage, Nyx had disappeared and the lone spotlight shone on a dais as if through water. From behind the platform, a blonde head began to emerge as an insisting beat took over from the drums.
The figure emerging was wearing a suit in a holographic-coloured material with no shirt underneath. He was standing in profile, one hand on his neck and the other on his chest, below his suit jacket.
"Young ambition... Say we'll go slow, but we never do." he started singing, his voice starting off soft, low and a bit raspy. "Premonition, see me spending every night with you."
The singer turned his face, only slightly, to cast a glance at the crowd. Harry froze.
"Oh, under the kitchen lights, you still look like dynamite and I wanna end up on you."
"Isn't that..." Ron began asking, bowing slightly to be ear-level with him.
Harry nodded and saw in his periphery how their whole group had come to a stop. Well, almost everyone. Luna simply kept dancing. Ginny looked at the three of them with a surprised look, laughed, shrugged and followed Lunas lead. And so did the rest of them, soon enough. All but Hermione, Harry and Ron.
"Oh... Don't need no place to go, just put on the radio. You know what I wanna do..."
His voice was higher now, clear and still so soft. While the last word stretched almost to a sigh, Harry felt like he was going under water. Looking around him, he saw his friends' hair start to float as if they were indeed submerged. On stage, Draco Malfoy had turned toward the crowd and looked intensely at them, at him, like a merman straight out of muggle stories, luring sailors in with his sultry voice.
"We can just dance to this. Don't take much to start me." He sang, moving his hips along to the beat. "We can just dance to this. Push up on my body." His pressed his left hand to his stomach, moving it downwards. "You know we've, already seen all of the parties..." He raised his arms, as if cradling the face of a lover, and lowered them slowly, tracing his invisible lover's body. Harry felt it, although he doubted it was part of the magic. "We can just dance to this, we can just... Dance to this."
Nyx had walked back on stage during the refrain, now wearing a dress and boots in the same material as Malfoy's, picking up the song on the next verse.
"It's quite good." Hermione yelled over the music and pulled Ron in to a soft sway.
Harry didn't move an inch. He stared as Malfoy danced along to Nyx' singing and joined her during the bridge.
"Oh, under the kitchen lights... You still look like dynamite... and I wanna end up on you." They sang and smiled to each other. Harry couldn't remember ever having seen him smile like that. "Oh... Don't need no place to go, just put on the radio. You know what I wanna do..."
Two dancers, one male and one female, came up to each of them and started dancing close to them from behind. Malfoy leaned back, resting his head on the taller man's shoulder and threading a hand through his curly hair, as they kept swaying and entered the refrain:
"We can just dance to this, don't take much to start me. We can just dance to this, push up on my body. You know we've already seen all of the parties... We can just dance to this, we can just... Dance to this."
The soft guitar riff came back as the dancers moved away and kept dancing on the sides. Then the riff disappeared again and left only the beat. The light orbs went out, then luminescent sea creatures emerged from the floor and started swimming around the crowd as the drums came in. Now he could only see the outlines of Malfoy and Nyx and the dancers. Malfoys voice dropped lower and Harry felt it close to his right ear, like a rough whisper:
"I don't wanna sleep tonight-night-night-night-night, I just wanna take that ride." He sang alone first, then Nyx' voice joined in Harrys left ear. A jellyfish swam by. "I don't wanna sleep tonight-night-night-night-night, I just wanna take that ride."
Before Harry even had a second to digest the impact they'd had on him, they were back to the refrain. The lights shining on stage and on the crowd now shifted, turning quickly into blue and then something warmer, like they were resurfacing after swimming in the depths of the ocean. Malfoys voice felt, if possible, even closer. Like speaking directly into Harrys thoughts:
"We can just dance to this, don't take much to start me. We can just dance to this, push up on my body. You know we've already seen all of the parties... We can just dance to this, we can just..."
While they picked up the beat again, Harry took his first deep breath in a while and blushed slightly as he felt the beginnings of an erection. He rearranged himself discreetly and kept watching as they brought the song to an end.
The crowd went crazy as the last chord faded away. Nyx laughed and hugged Malfoy closely and Harry thought he could see Malfoys hand shaking slightly as he hugged her back.
"Thank you!" He said to the crowd and waved awkwardly as he bowed his head and moved to stand to the side of the stage with the dancers.
"Wasn't that something?!" Nyx said and laughed. "He's single, you know!"
There was a bunch of wolf-whistling and Malfoy shook his head and covered it with his hands. Then Nyx introduced the next song.
He tried to dance along and ignore the dancing Malfoy, now barely visible at the side of the stage. But each song brought his mind back to Malfoy's swaying hips and the way his hand had slid down on his abdomen during his performance. Before Harry new it, the show was over and the crowd was making their way to the after-parties. They followed the crowd into the festival area and Harry did his best to ignore his intruding thoughts for the rest of the night.
