Work Text:
Oliver gulped nervously, fixing his bowtie for what felt like the thousandth time even though Skylar and Bree assured him he looked fine just as many times.
It was no use.
The two gorgeous superhero women helped him every step of the way, any way that they could but getting married was…. intimidating to say the least.
It feels like such a huge step, it took months of preparation, his fiancé wanted everything to be absolutely perfect.
It only got the young superhero with light brown hair and steel blue eyes really starting to think they may have rushed things.
That perhaps he should have said 'No' the fateful day Alan Diaz got on one knee and asked for his hand, all sweet and loving.
But Alan can also be so….. intimidating.
No, the hot-tempered hero didn't threaten or blackmail Oliver into marrying him, or anything of the sort, believe it or not…..a lot has changed and… feelings have blossomed since the distant days of 2015.
Oliver actually, willingly wants this.
He's just doubting if it's really the right time, if it's not 'too soon'.
Or if this is really the right person…..
Even with all the powers he had obtained from coming in contact with the Arcturion as a teenager, Oliver was still determined to go to College back home away from Centium City, this current environment wasn't really doing any good for him, his two closest friends and biggest crushes had found love and neither were with him, his heart was crushed into tiny pieces, he couldn't take it anymore, he needed to get away.
Skylar, his biggest idol growing up and someone he genuinely pictured himself marrying someday started dating Bree, the now bionic-superhero hybrid.
Kaz, his childhood best friend whose he had developed feelings towards also started dating (ugh) Chase, the local charming smartass…..
Everyone saw all of this coming a mile away but Oliver had never felt this alone and desolate before, he wanted to die or freeze the world forever so he made a conscious decision and took an indefinite time off of his superhero duties to go to College, insert himself in a new environment, meet new people, make new friends…..
…….Or reencounter old, familiar faces…..
Like Gus….
…..and Alan.
The two nerdiest-looking boys in all of Campus but Oliver didn't mind, he had always fit in better with the outcasts and 'weird' kids anyway, he had always been socially awkward and almost took pride in it, he was doing alright.
Then Gus started dating Jordan (yes, that was a huge surprise for literally everyone who could swear she'd turn out to be a lesbian) and suddenly Alan was hanging out at Oliver's dorm a lot more often, sometimes just chilling, eating 'normo' food and yelling slurs at the tv screen as they played videogames 'til the sunrise.
From then on, if Alan got himself into a fight (which was often, he doesn't know when to shut up), Oliver was there to punch (or freeze) whoever was picking on him, even if said person was in the right (they usually were).
Almost overnight, they became inseparable, you wouldn't see one without the other.
When Oliver was almost half-asleep doing homework late into a Wednesday night, most times he'd open one bright blue eye to spot a floating cup of coffee, situating itself on its own by the taller boy's desk or a blanket draping itself over his thin, gangly frame.
A timid, fond smile would sneak it's way around Oliver's rosy lips, he'd look back and find a smug Alan with his arms crossed, devilish smirk on his round features, shades hiding his dark gaze away, the ominous shadows behind him did not help but Oliver had noticed, he wasn't fooled.
He had noticed Alan trying his hardest to act kinder not only to the older brunet but to everyone else around them ever since he started to get closer to Oliver and earn his trust.
Oliver was really inspiring him to try to be a better person and he saw it all.
How much effort it really took for Alan.
Their friends weren't really buying it at all but Oliver has always been a tad naïve so the others were 100% convinced Alan was just taking advantage of him to get something and soon his true colors would return.
Yet that blow never truly came.
The first night they kissed after spending hours cuddling in Oliver's dorm room watching horror movies, the older of the two found it really strange that he didn't freak out more.
By then it felt only natural.
And to think they almost became cousins once, he shuddered.
When Oliver announced he and Alan were dating, Kaz had laughed out loud on the phone, Bree and Chase had never heard of Alan or the young menace he used to be before, Skylar tried to hide her snorts at first but she really couldn't help herself.
All of Oliver's friends thought this was some elaborate prank.
Yet somehow, to Skylar, that reality didn't seem completely far-fetched after all, back in their Mighty Med days, Oliver really had been the only one to believe there was some good left in Alan, the only one who thought the loud, hot-tempered, demanding brunet teen was worth saving, that he could be redeemed, not even Horace believed that at the time.
10 years later, there's a huge chance that he could have been right all along.
In turn, Gus was happy for them, inviting himself to their wedding without missing a beat and Jordan made a bet that it wouldn't last past that summer.
She lost.
Oliver somewhat discreetly picked at his nails by his sides as his trembling limbs entered the neatly decorated chapel, it looked nice, traditional, Alan, Horace and sometimes Nelson and Hapax picked most of the decorations, they brought in a lot of their latino heritage to it, Oliver genuinely liked it, even though it didn't exactly look like a mixed couple of gay boys were about to get married in here.
Throughout the whole ordeal the smart superhero simply stood beside his overenthusiastic, hard-to-please fiancé awkwardly with a 'Yes, sir' attitude, he liked seeing the younger of the two ordering people around and taking control of everything, it made Oliver feel…. things.
Gus' whole face lit up when he saw the anxious groom way back from the altar, instantly running down the aisle towards him, the young man in the thick-framed glasses was not only going to conduct the wedding but also sing at the party afterwards, he turned out to be an incredible singer and Oliver was happy his eccentric friend took this path, he was going to be a great musician.
Gus gave him a reassuring pat on the shoulder, Oliver tried to inhale and exhale but ended up with a coughing fit instead before weakly managing to ask if the eccentric normo had seen Alan.
Somehow he managed to remain oblivious to the Superhero World to this day.
He shook his head 'No' and noted that Alan's absence was a little strange since a sizable number of the guests present were from his side of the family.
Almost all of it, actually.
Oliver observed closely…. Horace was here, obviously, crying on his Cousin Boris' shoulder about how fast their little nephew grew up, Alan's Dad Nelson made awkward small talk with Alan's Mom Helena, both haven't really seen eye-to-eye in a very long time and had very different views on how their son was raised, they loved Oliver though and already saw him as family.
A somewhat disfunctional one but nonetheless.
Hapax the Elder whose now has the physical form of an 8-year-old ran around the hallways being chased by a snickering Kaz while Chase stared disapprovingly, Oliver likes that they both managed to find some time in their busy schedule saving lives to be here even though he still finds himself resenting what could have been from time to time.
It's all good now, when they get married, Oliver is going to be their best man too.
Dr. Ricardo Diaz, Horace's twin whom Oliver also had only seen once or twice was here as well along with all the other aunts, uncles, cousins and anyone else from the Diaz Family who just so happened to walk by and compliment him and/or wish him good luck.
The tall, strong yet still somewhat charmingly awkward icy superhero looked to his right, where his own family should have been, his Dad claimed to be 'too busy' in Sweden to make time for his own son's wedding, in reality, Oliver had picked up between the lines that what the older man didn't like at all was seeing his kid getting married to another man, didn't matter who.
His mom…..died slowly in prison, after the powers she had obtained sucked all of her limited strength as a normo and now, not even Horace had been able to save her.
Despite everything, he loved her deeply and misses her immensely to this day, there was something weirdly soothing, comfortingly familiar about having every single aspect of your life being controlled determined by someone else who acted as they've owned you.
Perhaps that had been the void Alan quite successfully filled in Oliver's life, the tall, former doctor didn't want to think too hard about it but it made sense, in a twisted way.
Oliver felt his throat increasingly drying and tightening up, his body tensing, his pale hands shaking and starting to sweat, adrenaline rushing into his bloodstream, he ran out of nails to bite about a week ago.
His chest was heaving, he was practically choking on his own spit, none of his blood family is here on the most important day of his life and he wanted to cry, he was starting to sob, he couldn't breathe.
Where was Alan when he needed most?
Oliver rushed into the hotel room, his bright eyes blurred with tears, his heart almost jumping out of his chest from how fast it was beating, the entire place started spinning, the curly-haired groom was already covered in sweat under his fancy tuxedo, he practically collapsed on the floor, by the foot of the king-sized bed he just shared with his fiancé last night.
Contrary to what most people had warned him, Alan had surprisingly been a lovely boyfriend and consequently, lovely fiancé, they completed each other, Alan had been the fire to Oliver's ice when Kaz was no longer there to provide him warmth.
Why couldn't Oliver's own Dad see how happy he is now?
Is he happy though?
His 'found family' is all here, Kaz, Skylar, Jordan, Gus, Chase, Bree (even Adam and Leo!!!) No Davenport however yet he did help with most of the costs despite 1) His massive ego 2) He didn't really have to yet he did it anyway.
Horace's persuasion and Ricardo's hypnosis may or may not have had something to do with it.
All of that even with Oliver admittingly neglecting them during some of his College years, they still showed up to display support.
Shouldn't that be enough?
Hugging his knees to his chest, curling into himself on the floor and rolling back and forth on his heels, trying to breathe in and out but it seemed like all oxygen in the universe had vanished all at once.
Oliver should have known, this was a very bad idea,
They were too young to get married, Oliver just turned 25 and Alan is not even 24 yet, Oliver's strict family clearly didn't approve of it, even his grandma declined the invite, she practically raised him while his mom was at work, it hurts that they all turned their backs on him like this.
And- And even if Alan has improved considerably ever since they first started dating, doesn't mean he 'suddenly' changed his mind about being unapologetically evil.
What if….What if his friends were right and this is- this is all an elaborate plan to defeat Oliver and the Elite Force from the inside, Alan's Uncle Ricardo can hypnotize people, right? What if Oliver's unknowingly been under an evil spell all these past years?
How despicable would that be?!
Oliver started uncontrollably hyperventilating, feeling like he could pass out any second now....
....When he faintly heard in the distance……
………A mewl.
A cat's meow.
Oliver stopped forcibly pulling at his own once neatly gelled honey brown hair and furiously biting his lip to curiously look up for a moment.
Indeed there was a small, fat, black and white cat quickly rushing towards him, it purred gently as it rubbed it's head against Oliver's trembling knee, the anxious, neurotic groom couldn't help the shaking hand that reached out to pet it's soft, smooth, rich fur.
Oliver didn't know pets were allowed in here and if they aren't, how it got here, at the moment, he didn't care, he instinctively fluffed it's fur for a little while longer, it purred some more, clearly pleased to receive attention as well, it's vibrations helping wonders with Oliver's anxious nerves, the brunet former doctor could finally breathe again.
Oliver grunted softly as he took the tiny, round pet into his scrawny arms, holding it just tight enough to feel warm and comforting without possibly scaring it away.
The fancy-dressed, young superhero lovingly kissed the top of it's head, earning happy purrs and mewls and more head rubs, it was mostly black with white paws resembling tiny boots, that thought in itself made Oliver smile the widest, he and Alan should adopt a pet once they settle in their new apartment and-
Oliver suddenly froze in place, mouth agape, his steel blue eyes growing wide, he stared down at the cat's own fearing, widened orbs.
Big, doe, deep, very dark brown eyes innocently gazed back up at him, Oliver let out the sharp breath he didn't realize he was holding, everybody knows cats don't have brown eyes of any sort.
Love and recognition growing all across the older's oddly handsome features, butterflies in his stomach like he hasn't felt in a while.
"Alan!!!
….You were scared too…..
……Weren't you?"
"I hate to admit it, baby, but you're too smart for your own good." Alan swiftly transformed back, huffing in defeat as he was now fully seated sideways on his fiancé's lap, the grin adorning his supple lips, showcasing his adorable dimples was still warm and fond however.
Alan's heavy weight all up on stick-thin legs like Oliver's would have bothered any regular normo.
But neither men were regular normos.
Oliver grinned back widely, holding Alan closer to himself, softly patting the younger's head affectionately just like he had done with Cat!Alan.
"....I could use a nap, I haven't slept or eaten anything in the last 36 hours…." Alan sighed wearily, yawning and stretching his dormant limbs under Oliver's feather-y touch.
"What." Oliver frowned, not happy at all with the information he was just given.
How did Alan get away with this? How come Oliver didn't pay attention?
They were just so caught up on each other.
They forgot to care about themselves.
"Hey, that's my thing!" Alan whined playfully, pulling at the crumpled sleeve of his partner's expensive tuxedo, pouting stubbornly.
"Don't change subjects, big guy, come on, get up, the ceremony is in less than an hour so we won't be able to get any real sleep right now but I can still order something for you to eat." Oliver took a more strict tone, always the more responsible, level-headed one no matter what duo he was in.
Oliver is an awkward, neurotic, anxious, chaotic mess yet the people around him somehow always seem to be so much worse for whatever reason.
He wouldn't have it any other way though.
"Let me guess….veggie pizza….no onion…." Alan rolled his eyes good-naturedly, reluctantly standing up off of his partner's lap and dusting himself off.
Thankfully no hairballs.
"The first 'normo food' I ever made you eat."
"The first 'normo food' you ever made me eat."
They deadpanned in unison as Alan helped Oliver up, both grinning dumbly, affectionately at one another, kissing deeply afterwards.
Alan threw himself on the large bed with a heavy thud, hands under his head, obnoxious smirk on his knowing face as Oliver started ordering said pizza.
"You're too lucky I turned out to like that shit."
"Your whole family is right there, even Timeline and Horace are getting along." Oliver mused, genuinely surprised as he happily hand fed his soon-to-be husband yet another pizza slice.
"That's definitely impressive, up until a couple years ago, you wouldn't be able to even get them to be in the same room." Alan laughed out loud through a mouthful of melted cheese, radish slices and celery.
Oliver wanted to find the display disgusting but the inner feedee in him found his lover's sloppy behavior extremely endearing instead, Alan was going to eat so much normo food after the ceremony, Oliver licked his lips in anticipation looking forward to it.
After a beat of awkward silence, Alan spoke again. "Hey, what about your Dad, did he-"
"No, he's not here, he's never gonna be satisfied with anything I do, I suppose…." Oliver bit the inside of his cheek, looking down at the mess they were making on the fancy bedding.
"Hey, relax, babe, you could borrow my Uncle Horace and-" Alan reached out, placing a big hand under Oliver's stubbed, scruffy chin, caressing the scratchy surface with his large thumb.
"It's no big deal, sweetheart, really, I was just a little stressed, just like you were but it's fine now, thanks to you." Oliver admitted shyly, hesitantly glancing up as he squeezed Alan's hand tenderly under his own, absolutely downplaying how he actually felt.
It was a terrible habit of his.
Timid steel blue eyes met determined coffee brown ones and at that moment any doubt that remained looming over their heads was gone.
"I'm the one who should be thanking you…. for putting up with me." Alan tilted his head slightly, suddenly feeling a little bashful as well, painfully aware he isn't the easiest person to have around.
Yet Oliver still loves him.
Loves him enough to willingly want to spend the rest of his life with him.
That was remarkable.
Only 10 years ago, the short-tempered hero was convinced nobody liked him or even wanted to have him around, Teen!Alan would've never dreamed of any of this.
This Day coming.
Yet here he is.
Looking in the anxious yet hopeful bright eyes of the love of his life.
"You made it easier for me." Oliver kissed the palm of Alan's greasy hand, then giggled involuntarily, feeling a little silly for doing such gesture.
Alan only laughed back, slowly letting go of his lover's face and grabbing the last pizza slice on the box, they had 3 minutes left before they needed to head down to the chapel.
Both looked like they just survived a thunderstorm yet they could not look happier.
"You're worth it, baby."
"So are you, Alley Cat."
"Please, don't."
"Yes, sir."
