More Than Friends

Work Text:

It was a sunny Friday afternoon and school had just let out for John. The ravenette was sitting in his dorm bedroom, sunlight streaming through the window on the right side of the room, bathing him in a warm glow while giving his messy black hair a lighter gray appearance.

John didn't bother hiding his giddiness as he grabbed his laptop off his desk and flopped down onto his bed, opening it as he adjusted himself into a more comfortable position.

It had been a little while now since John had made amends with Seraphina. She had managed to finally get through to him, and promised to be by his side as he finally got the proper mental help he had been needing for almost two years, and she stayed true to her word. Throughout the whole process, the two had grown even closer than they were before, and John had started finding it hard to hide the fact that he had started thinking of his best friend as more than a best friend.

He hid his feelings though, because he didn't know if she had developed similar feelings about him, and he didn't want to confess and make things awkward between them after things had finally turned around for them both. Seraphina had gotten her ability back, and John was finally realizing where his true morals lied.

The ravenette had become a king everyone had started to look up to. He was kind, charismatic, and he wasn't afraid to step in and stop an unfair fight when needed, usually between low-tiers and mid-tiers.

No one had believed him when he suddenly walked into the Safe House one day with intentions to help instead of to harm. Blyke had tried to throw him out of the classroom, but with Seraphina's convincing, who had been by his side, they both managed to convince the whole club that his intentions were no longer to hurt. He genuinely wanted to help and that's what he did. Him and Seraphina definitely made a great team.

John smiled as he clicked the call button under the contact named "Dad" on his laptop, his bright white smile enough to light up the whole room.

Turns out, Seraphina really did reciprocate his feelings.

It happened around the middle of the school day, as the pair both decided they had had enough of class for the day, and just decided to chill on the roof of the school as they always did.

John was trying his very hardest to beat Seraphina's Slappy Pig score, but with her ability returned, she was kicking his a*s. Of course he could've copied it, but he wanted to play and win the traditional way.

Seraphina snickered as John let out a frustrated sigh and nearly chucked his phone across the rooftop as he lost another round, her head resting against his broad shoulder with her magenta bangs falling over the side of her face as she stared at her own phone, but she seemed to be distracted. She wasn't even using her ability to play the game this time!

In fact, John had noticed that she had been distracted all day, more than usual. He had watched her accidentally bump into someone in the halls, their papers flying everywhere, as the poor kid tried to hastily gather his belongings all while Seraphina continued to walk by with a finger to her chin as if nothing had happened.

'That's not like her at all.' John had thought as he bent down to assist the other student in picking up their scattered belongings, raising an eyebrow in Seraphina's direction as she just continued walking away.

She would've definitely stopped to help.

Now John had tilted his head slightly to the left to glance at the girl who still had her cheek pressed against his shoulder. She seemed to be tapping at nothing on her phone.

She seemed almost nervous.

"Hey, Sera?" The young male decided to speak up. "Is everything ok? You seem awfully distracted today."

Seraphina tensed a bit at the question, lifting her head off John's shoulder to meet his beautiful golden gaze.

Leave it to John to notice all the little things about her. She didn't mind though. She liked someone paying attention to her the way John did. It made her feel important and special.

John watched in concern as Seraphina adjusted her school blazer, before taking a deep breath and opening her mouth to reply to him, her expression hardened into one of determination.

"John." She began, as said ravenette slightly tilted his head to the side at the mention of his name. "There's something I've been wanting to tell you for a little bit now."

The black-haired teen took a sharp intake of air as his heart practically started beating out of his chest, a light blush dusting his cheeks. Is this what he thought it was?

'No, John! Don't get your hopes up!' He scolded himself. God, why was he so easily flustered.

"Just….promise me you won't freak out and start avoiding me after we've come so far. I just need to get this off my chest." Seraphina's voice cut into his internal scolding. She was staring at him, and her fists were clenched together so hard, her knuckles were turning white.

"Sera, you know i could never avoid you." John smiled, his gaze softening as he looked at her. "And stop clenching your hands together so hard like that!" He scolded her as he grabbed both her hands and intertwined his fingers with hers. "You'll make your palms bleed with how sharp your nails are."

John playfully teased her, not fully aware of what he had just done. When he finally looked down, he nearly fainted in embarrassment, but hid it with practiced ease.

"S-sorry. It just kinda happened. I can let go-"

"No." The young female's voice interrupted him. "It's fine."

The two teens sat in silence for a few moments, both staring down at their interlocked hands. It wasn't an awkward silence though, it was surprisingly comfortable.

"Hey, John?" Seraphina's voice cut through the silence, and John found himself staring into her stunning azure eyes as she stared into his golden ones. "This might come off weird, but what I was trying to say before was….we've been through so much, both together and the few weeks where we were apart. After our fight, I started realizing how hard it was to get through each day without you by my side, us taking on the world together, ya know? Certain feelings started to develop, and they have only continued to grow since we've made up, and I just had to say something."

As she was talking, John was nodding his head thoughtfully, trying to show her she had his full attention. Excitement began bubbling in his stomach, but he pushed it back down. He wasn't completely sure if this was a confession yet. He hoped to everything in existence it was.

"John, I've been seeing you as more than a friend lately." The magenta-haired girl stated, keeping her eyes locked onto his. A small blush had begun making itself known on her face.

"What are you trying to say?" John asked, trying to remain calm and collected on the outside, but inside his stomach was doing flip flops and his heart was practically beating out of his chest in happiness. He knew what she meant.

"I want to be with you as more than friends. I like you, John Doe." Seraphina confirmed what he knew, a small smile gracing her lips, and he couldn't contain himself any longer. "I know this might be sudden and I understand if you don't feel-"

Seraphina was abruptly cut off as she turned her head to the side, and John flew forward, placing a quick kiss on her cheek. The girl's blue eyes widened in surprise as she brought a hand up to delicately touch her cheek where the ravenette had kissed her.

John, realizing what he just did, threw his hands up defensively and scrambled away from her like an idiot.

"Sorry! Was that weird? Is it too soon? Gah, I probably just ruined everything!" John spewed out, his face beet red as he started fiddling with his tie.

Seraphina, recovered from her shocked stupor, simply just chuckled at the sight before her. John really was entertaining, not to mention cute when he was flustered.

"You missed." She giggled.

John stopped fiddling with his black tie to look up at her, his brows furrowed in confusion.

"Huh-"

A pair of soft lips crashed into his, and John found himself immediately melting into the kiss as he wrapped his arms around his Sera and pulled her closer to him. The kiss became more passionate as Seraphina pressed her hands against John's chest, before moving them to wrap her arms around his neck, his arms being wrapped affectionately around her waist. This was John's first kiss, and he wouldn't have wanted it to be with anyone else.

Seraphina was thinking the same thing.

After a while, the two pulled away for air, staring into each other's eyes as John broke into one of his usual dorky smiles and brought a hand up to sheepishly rub the back of his head.

"I like you too, Sera."

"Wow, I would've never guessed." Seraphina playfully teased him as the two shifted their positions to lean with their backs against the fence.

"So….does this mean we're a thing now?" The young male asked shyly as Seraphina nuzzled into his side.

"I would think so." The magenta-haired teen mumbled as she buried her face in John's chest as he slung an arm around her, both relieved that their feelings were now out in the open without the fear of one rejecting the other.

John glanced up at the sun, still smiling brightly as he turned his gaze back downward to look at the girl cuddled up to his chest.

"Do you...maybe wanna get some boba after school? As more than friends?" He was so lucky to have her in his life.

Seraphina smiled into her now boyfriend's chest as she closed her eyes and opened her mouth to respond.

"It's a date, you dork."

John was so lost in thought at the recent memory that he hadn't realized his dad had answered his call and was staring at him as if he was crazy.

"Uh, John? Why are you staring at me smiling like an idiot?" John startled at the sound of his father's voice through the laptop and nearly fell off his bed as he was snapped back to the present.

"Oh, Dad! I didn't realize you picked up." John laughed. He was definitely a lot more happy ever since the events of earlier today.

"Well that wasn't obvious." William stated sarcastically as he rolled his gray eyes, a fond smirk adorning his expression. "Did you need anything? You aren't high are you? You look stupidly happy."

"No, Dad, I'm not high." It was John's turn to roll his golden eyes and fondly smirk at his father. "I actually needed some advice."

"Oh? About what?"

John then proceeded to tell the older ravenette on the other end of the call the events of the day, and how he was now in a relationship with Seraphina and he needed some relationship advice as he didn't really know what to expect.

William's eyes widened in amusement as he leaned back in his chair and crossed his arms over his chest, and watched his son excitedly tell him about his first kiss, and how him and Seraphina were going on a boba date this evening.

The father smiled as John finished up his story, a light shining in his eyes that William hadn't seen in a long time. He was so happy that John was finally happy, and finally figuring out who he was meant to be in life.

It had been a long, painful struggle for him, but things seemed to finally be looking up for him and William couldn't be more glad.

"So what do you think?" The younger's voice cut into the man's thoughts.

"That's wonderful, son." He said, straightening his posture. "I'm so proud of you."

John beamed on the other end of the call, flashing one of his bright smiles from where he sat on his bed as William returned it. Nothing could describe the happiness he felt seeing his son being able to genuinely smile again.

The older male ran a hand through his gelled raven locks as he opened his mouth to start giving John the best advice he could give as a father to his son who had just started his first relationship. As he was talking, with John listening intently on the other end, he made a mental note to contact Seraphina later and thank her for everything she had done for his son.

He really was so grateful that John had someone like her in his life, and a gut feeling told him that those two's feelings would continue to expand for each other until he would one day be sitting in the front row of their wedding.

Call him optimistic, but he knew those two would be happy together, and he was going to support his son till the end.
