Kage stared out into the woods. The trees towered over him, seemingly forming a wall. The shadow had been waiting for who knows how long, but the hope he had was slowly diminishing.
“He’s not coming is he..”
Just that morning, Bojji and Kage had agreed to meet up in the forest just outside of the kingdom. The time during the day wasn’t enough for Kage, he wanted to spend every hour with his friend. Ever since the two met and got acquainted with each other, their non-stop chats invigorated them with a feeling of closeness neither of them had ever felt before, no one could keep them separated for long; like they were stuck in their own little world together, the feeling was blissful.
However, neither of them ever questioned the nature of their fondness for one another. They figured it was merely a strong friendship but would friends really dote on each other… and hold hands… and catch each other staring?...
Kage was especially inexperienced in matters of the heart, but even he knew something was different about how they treated each other compared to anyone else.
He wanted to ask the boy, was the warmth he felt in his chest being around him normal? But the thought made him anxious for a reason he couldn’t put words. He only ever felt this way about the little prince.
Maybe that night he could figure out what was going on.
Bojji’s eyes lit up when Kage shyly asked that day to meet up later. He nodded intensely, and pinky promised Kage he would be there. The contact between their hands should have ended but they stayed connected for a few moments longer, a faint warmth radiating from their fingers as the small gesture persisted. They awkwardly pulled apart after realizing how lost they had become in just the brief touch, quickly saying their goodbyes.
As they parted ways, a certain reoccurring warmth started up in both their chests, unknowing to each other at the time, a faint smile appeared across both their faces.
In true shadow fashion, the boy had hidden just how excited he truly was to see Bojji again that day. The thought of him and his best friend spending the night together having fun made Kage giddy beyond belief.
So what was the holdup?
He said he would be here, but he wasn’t. He knew the prince would never stand him up like that right? He was too good for that. That didn't stop the little blob from overthinking the situation, unfortunately.
“He couldn't have been scolded by that old queen, could he? What if he got lost on the way?”
He paused a moment.
“What if he really didn't want to see me at all tonight?” His heart sank at the possibility. He sat in silence for a bit, looking down at the grass barely visible in the moonlight.
A sudden rustle from behind snapped him out of his thoughts. His thief instincts kicked in as he braced for potential danger, only to catch a hint of blue before fully turning around hoping it was who he thought it was.
“Bojji?”
He heard a familiar voice. “Ae!”
He knew.
“Bojji!!!”
Kage ran to the prince and with a leap, dived right into his arms as they laughed. Bojji tighten his grip and spun around, making him lose his balance, and fell backward onto the grass. (still holding on to the blob of course)
“Where were you!? What took you so long?! I missed y-“ the blob stopped, coughing and catching himself right before he said the last part. “You were late.” The blob pouted and looked away.
Bojji giggled and then enunciated a genuine sorry. Kage could still understand him perfectly, however.
“Well whatever, it doesn’t matter now!”
The two boys lay together for a while, laughing as the grass settled and swayed underneath them, the pair was unbelievably happy.
Together they stargazed, pointing and connecting the tiny dots, making pictures in the sky.
The night was so peaceful, nothing but the crisp air and the faint hum of crickets flowed in the atmosphere.
Bojji shifted a bit, but Kage didn’t pay mind to it until eventually, the shadow boy felt something soft on his side. He looked over and Bojji was leaning against him.
Kage jumped a bit at the realization, his heart refused to be still. Bojji’s cheek pressed against him like a pillow, and licks of hair tickled at him as well. The soft curly mess was tempting him and a thought plagued his mind. Oh, how he wanted to just reach out and play with his hair…
“Calm down calm down!” he told himself.
He had to do something to acknowledge what just happened, he knew couldn’t just pretend it didn’t.
Kage took glances back and forth from Bojji, making sure he really meant to do what he did. Bojji just lay there comfortably and smiled looking up at the sky. The blob had never seen the boy look so peaceful so up close before, he noticed his eyes glittered and shined, reflecting the stars above them. It brought the blob a certain joy he couldn’t explain.
Kage quietly chuckled to himself, and just like it was natural, wrapped his arm around Bojji’s shoulder and settled in closer. Bojji jumped a bit at the contact and look down at his shoulder. After noticing it was Kage's hand, he relaxed again and smiled a soft, warm smile. Seeing Kage’s sudden affection made him happy. He looked back at the sky more content than ever, his heart beating a little bit faster this time.
The pair continued to stare at the night sky laying in comfortable silence. Several minutes passed. Bojji looked back down after a bit and caught Kage doing the same, their eyes met.
The split second of direct eye contact took Bojji by surprise but the boys just kept staring at each other and there they were, transported to their little world again, just the two of them.
The moonlight reflected off their features, highlighting each other’s faces, and entrancing them even further, they just couldn’t look away.
A moment passed. The two realized just how long they were staring at each other. Embarrassed, Kage looked away and muttered a shy and stumbled “sorry” darting his eyes away, taking the arm that was around the boy's shoulder to fidget with his hands instead.
Bojji hurriedly turned to face him more, a bit hurt Kage pulled away his hand but noticeably more flushed in the cheeks. Kage had a faint look of uncertainty in his eyes, he thought to himself. “Ah, he must think this is so awkward...”
“L-Listen… sorry if I made it weird I-”
“Ae!” Bojji faintly pouted as he shushed his friend. He was having none of this fumbled apology.
The prince scooted closer and lay on his side facing Kage, the blob said nothing but his breath wavered briefly. The boy inched closer and closer and closer. Bojji's free arm moved to Kage’s side and gently cupped his face. The space between them was practically nonexistent, and the arm practically enclosed them within their world refusing either of them to snap out of it again.
The intense beat of the shadow boy’s heart came back, the feeling so familiar yet so new. He could feel the warmth between them, the faint breaths taken between them, everything.
“B-Bojji..” Kage’s expression wore a distinct softness that told Bojji to move even closer, his eyes now half-lidded.
The boy slowly leaned in, Kage’s beak following suit, and together they closed the gap.
The kiss was soft and chaste, and the both of them closed their eyes to focus on the dreamlike sensation. It was a little messy seeing as it was both their first times but regardless, it felt right.
Kage held Bojji's hand firmly in place, not wanting him to let go. They wanted nothing more than to just be in the moment.
This moment.
This one special moment.
Together.
Their eyes opened back up as they parted. Their eternity had been only a few seconds but the starry night sky was now irrelevant as they stared at each other in awe. A shy, breathless smile on both their faces.
The little prince's face softened as he looked at the shadow boy, he chuckled as he rubbed his thumb back and forth on his cheek, Kage leaning into it. Eventually, they lay there together in comfortable silence again, they could think about the details of what that kiss meant later, all they wanted to focus on was the present moment, and each other.
