Work Text:
Thomas Watson used to be a hated character. He was shunned in the books and the fandom. Thomas was a taboo topic, in the books, everyone would look at you in disgust, however, the fandom would berate you if it wasn't harsh words towards Thomas. Hell, it was dangerous to talk about the boy on online servers. Even the ones that claimed they were open-minded.
People would dox and threaten bodily harm if you even claimed that Thomas wasn't that bad. Of course, because of this, the fandom had a bad reputation. Multiple people who had read the books stayed far away from it, the servers, the blogs, Twitter and any other social media site were a war zone.
Some even joked that they were close to the ARMY. They were dealt with quickly as the people who made such light-hearted jokes were in the headlines.
The fandom was quite popular with the media. Every other week a new 'The Story of the Adopted Son!' fan was charged with assault.
Tommy was put in a hospital just for tweeting out 'lowkey relating to Thomas....both hated in the rich world'. And the worst part about it was some crazy attacker had printed out all his information (where did they even get it from??) and posted it on posters all around his town. It was safe to say he had moved out rather quickly from the stares.
And it wasn't even a lie.
For a while, Tommy wholeheartedly believed that he related to the main character, Ranboo Watson. Because he was also taken from poverty and suddenly thrust into the rich world and shunned. Because he was also attacked often by a younger boy who just seemed to loathe him.
But no, when the second book came out it became so much clear whom Tommy related with. Thomas Watson is the boy who never gained attention and was just put in a bad light. This is who Tommy was, a neglected boy who just got suddenly berated when this new son came into the house.
Of course, when 'Why Must I Grow In Dirt?' by hitting online novelist Sore Turtbird came out everyone suddenly changed. The whole fandom was sent into shock. It showed Thomas's point of view in 'The Story of the Adopted Son!'. Scenes that were often viewed as mysterious in the first book were finally shown.
Scenes that showed that Tommy was berated by people whom he was supposed to call family.
By people, he didn't even know.
And worst of all, it showed how Ranboo was. Ranboo was just the fakest bitch ever. It showed how Ranboo admitted to Thomas and how he was just using the Watson family for his use. But would show Ranboo talking on and on to the other family members about how great they were, how nice they were. For Tommy, it was painful to read how 'grateful' Ranboo was for the family taking him in.
Ranboo knew how nobody would believe Thomas, and he, the 'innocent' boy used this to his advantage.
Tommy, being the baddest bitch ever, read both books in one night which took up three hours, and made a fifteen-page google document of how Ranboo was one of the worst characters. Three whole pages were taken up because of one 'innocent' character. Tommy of course highlighted the manipulating phrases that Ranboo has used. Hell, it even had fucking citations of the most manipulating phrases from fucking therapists. Of course, it didn't just stick to Ranboo, it showed how bad every other character was.
Like Tubbo Under, the only son of Earl Schlatt Under, who had left Thomas (the boy's only friend) for Ranboo (the boy who manipulated him) under the guise of 'things weren't working out’. Of course, nobody believed this. Everybody in the book knew that Tubbo was humiliating Thomas.
And this was a huge flex for Tommy because even the most hated/popular author Sore Turtbird had fucking reposted the tweet and just commented, 'Everything in this doc is so true. Stan @thomastheonlyboy'. Six hours later after the tweet, they had even said 'Thomas was the only good character in both books. Along with Miss Jen the nanny. It's just that they were put into a bad light.' in the Twitter space.
Pretty fucking great right? Obviously not.
Cause the bastard who put him in Thomas Watson’s seven-year-old body deserved to burn in hell.
Tommy is not having a fun time!
