Quakemaster pulled open the oven door and was dismayed to find that his cookies were as flat as paper and burned to a crisp. As he gazed sadly at their blackened appearances, a huge plume of black smoke wafted out from the oven and engulfed Quakemaster’s head, making him cough heavily and back away.
A forlorn sigh escaped his lips as he looked at his failed attempt to surprise Obsidian with freshly baked cookies.
Where had he gone wrong? he wondered. He thought back to when Nightmare Knight had taught him how to bake.
“Don’t mix too much when you put the flour into the dough. That will make the cookies spread out too much in the oven.”
Quakemaster nodded along with Nightmare Knight’s instructions, but he wasn’t really listening. He was too excited about surprising Obsidian and seeing the smile on his face when Quakemaster gave him a warm cookie, fresh from the oven.
He turned his attention back to Nightmare Knight when he realized the being hadn’t spoken for a while. When he looked at Nightmare Knight, Quakemaster wasn’t very surprised to find his stony gaze fixed on him, silent and judgmental.
Quakemaster frowned, suitably ashamed. “What was that again?” he asked. Nightmare Knight’s expression didn’t change at all, but Quakemaster imagined he was rolling his eyes as he answered.
“I asked you what you were learning all this for,” Nightmare Knight said.
Quakemaster looked down at the table, absentmindedly picking at the edge with his fingernail. “…No reason,” he eventually said, avoiding Nightmare Knight’s eyes.
Nightmare Knight sighed heavily, sending a blast of air towards Quakemaster. “Why do I even ask?” he said, seemingly talking to himself. Quakemaster smiled internally.
Nightmare Knight blew out another long breath and shook his head. “Well, as long as you’re not planning to poison anyone.”
Quakemaster shook his head in reply. “Definitely not,” he said.
Nightmare Knight surveyed him for a moment then, seeming to decide he was telling the truth, got back to teaching him how to make cookies.
Quakemaster was shaken out of his thoughts by the sound of footsteps approaching the kitchen. He whirled around just in time to see Obsidian walk into the kitchen.
The smile on his face was replaced with a look of suspicion as he took in the scene in front of him.
Quakemaster stood in front of the oven, effectively hiding it with his large form. However, Obsidian could see a wisp of dark smoke rising from behind Quakemaster and judging by the burnt smell that lingered in the air and the utter ruin of every single bowl and mixing utensil in the kitchen, he could guess what had happened.
Quakemaster slumped defeatedly as Obsidian’s smile came back and he walked towards Quakemaster. “Did you try to bake something for me?” Obsidian asked.
Quakemaster nodded, frowning. “It didn’t turn out very well,” he said gruffly.
Obsidian laughed lightly. “That’s fine, I’ll still eat it, whatever it is,” he said. Quakemaster’s frown deepened and he shuffled aside to show Obsidian the cookies. The smile faltered on Obsidian’s face as he took in the charred remains of the cookies. “Oh, well…at least we’ve got chocolate chips,” he said.
Quakemaster huffed a laugh. “At least there’s that.”
Obsidian wrapped his arms around Quakemaster and hugged him tightly, filling Quakemaster’s chest with warmth. “Thank you for trying,” Obsidian said. Quakemaster smiled and hugged him back. “You’re welcome,” he replied.
Even though his plan of baking for Obsidian had failed, he could still rest easy knowing that his partner would always be there for him (despite his poor baking skills).
