Work Text:
Bad and Dapper were out together on a boat they’re out on an adventure once again. It was quiet, only the whirring noise of the motorboat and the sound of the rippling waters of the sea as the motorboat sailed across it. Beneath the sky, along their left side ran an orange line of light from horizon to horizon: Setting sun on tranquil waters in explosion of color so brilliant that it hurt their eyes if they looked at it too long. The air was warm but sweet - filled with smells of salt spray and seaweed.
“I love you, son.” Bad spoke out, the motorboat’s humming nearly suppressed Bad’s voice soft voice. He followed the phrase with, “You’re a great little egg, you know that?”
Dapper's face lit up in surprise and joy as his dad, Bad, but he wasn’t able to respond to his dad’s message since there wasn’t any place for Dapper to place a sign, but he was persistent on showing his affection to his father, he wanted to show that he also loves Bad. Slowly, almost hesitantly, but growing surer by the second - Dapper wrapped his arms lovingly around Bad's shoulders in response.
After that, there was silence again. The motorboat danced lightly over the waves of the enthralling sea, the engine’s hums over the pleasant silence. Only for it to be broken again, “I’m glad we’ve been able to spend all these days together.” Bad said, his eyes soften as he took a glimpse at his son who was hugging his arm. “We had a lot of fun.”
Dapper nodded, his hand never letting go of his dad. The two of them shared this quiet moment together, and the fact that the sun was setting was just perfect. Its orange hue fading away, as the indigo night sky transitioned into the sky.
“I that’s - that’s the thing,” Bad stammers before he starts his rambling. “I think, something Quackity said, you know, he said something about the inevitability…” Bad trailed off, as if he’s almost hesitant to say it, saddened at the fact that it’s true. “…of how we’re gonna lose you guys, or whatever.” He continued. He knows that he’ll have to say goodbye to Dapper someday, their mother would come back, and when she does he’ll leave with her.
He felt a bit bitter about saying goodbye to Dapper, but he remembers the time he spent with him, the happy memories the two of them made. Bad smiled, continuing his words, “And I think that, regardless of what’s inevitable. It’s not so much that it’s the end of the road, but the journey you take, you know?”
“It’s the memories you make along the way.” Bad remembers the first time he first met Dapper at the adoption center.
He looked around the adoption center, before completely stopping at one of the glass cases. Through the glass was an egg wearing a top hat with a red ribbon laced around it. Bad smiled at the egg softly cheering, “Yeah, top hat egg!” Quackity approaches Bad as he asked, “You wanna get this one?” Bad nods, his eyes set on the dragon egg. “This one’s got a lot of character.” He said confidently.
“No matter what happens, Dapper - like - no matter what happens to you, whatever happens to me, whatever, like at least we’ll have memories of the time we spent together, you know?” Bad couldn’t look at Dapper anymore, his eyes stuck on the sea, he was afraid that if he looks at Dapper he’ll start tearing up.
"And I think thats what’s important, Dapper.”
Even though Bad said all that. He knew he’d be destroyed inside once Dapper does go back with his mother, but he had to accept it. Accept that all good things must come to an end.
