Chapter 1: Quinn

Chapter Text

There is another definition for onism, or a more complete one.

Onism - n. The frustration of being stuck in just one body, that inhabits only one place at a time. To grasp onism is to be apprised of how little of the world you have experienced, are experiencing, or will ever experience.

Quinn could see how they could’ve confused the definition all those years ago, and they also deeply wished they had multiple bodies right about now.

The week after the whole ordeal with Maven wasn’t a busy one, surprisingly, but the newly discovered princen had errands thrust upon them, little by little, day after day. Quinn was just relieved to finally sleep their usual hours and that all of their friends were fine. Quinn was so exhausted that they didn’t register the high amount of tasks they’ve appointed on themself until the morning of the new month. Prank Day.

What a prank indeed. Though normally Quinn would make sure their tricks wouldn’t backfire.

Helene has been a huge help throughout all of this, for better or for worse. She taught Quinn how to organize stuff, a skill they never really had a knack for, and she promised to help them understand the world they have unknowingly been born into; the world of being a magical heir to a throne that doesn’t exist anymore. However, the way the lawyer taught her pupil these things…irked them, to say the very least. More robot or textbook than actual human; her tendency to bring chills everywhere she goes didn’t help either, though it did help with the upcoming summer heat.

But, Quinn finally decided to use Helene’s lessons for something useful. Something productive, even.

They made a wheel, an actual functional wheel. It wasn’t super fancy, just pieces of colored paper plastered against the right wall. However, the garishly bright colors made their kind of dull white and beige hotel room a little bit more like home. Helene said once that she always felt bad that Quinn slept in the cold air, and like hell they’ll become someone to be pitied. Plus, it turned out mattresses are comfortable. Who knew?

Each one had a different name, for a different errand Quinn had to do. The craftsperson looked at their creation as they leaned against their precious mimic.

  • Sylvia: Send her ingredients, gifts, and flowers, or whatever.
  • Mint: Help her with taming the new horse.
  • Muktuk: Have him examine your weird, weird monocle.
  • Saffron: Thank her for her work by planting new trees in her forest.
  • Baptiste: Save him from getting eaten while picking flowers.
  • Oswald: Convince him that you are a good partner for Sylvia, and maybe help with deliveries if it's convenient.
  • Roxanne: See her in her new digs, and make sure Ceras hasn’t burnt down a building yet.
  • Luna: Entertain her by participating in her lecture about the history of…everything.
  • Corsac: Encourage him to adopt from the shelter, because he needs to stop screeching or chirping to other humans.
  • Xid: Applaud her as she comes out with her new single, “The Story I Can’t Tell Yet.”
  • Helene: Confront her about this whole therapy business, and the game plan for the excursion that’s required of them.
  • Salt & Pepper: Repay them for a favor that they had no part in agreeing to (thanks Syl.)

Twelve errands. Twelve. How did Quinn let this happen? Their limit is three errands a month!

They sighed, taking a glance down to Boxer. “…You don’t think I have to do this all the time now, do ya?”

Boxer yipped, slobber coating the expensive rug beneath them.

“Yea, me neither.”

Quinn gave their pet a quick scritch on the head as they reached over to their dresser for a tack. They straightened their back, closing their golden eye, their crimson one surveying the wheel. It was basically a randomized game, because their vision was so bad that even if one of their eyes was obscured, their whole world became a swath of browns and whites, though the little disc of color was still somewhat perceptible.

They stuck out their tongue, raised their tack, and threw it to where the wheel was. Hopefully. If it broke a window then at least it would be funny.

A thunk afterward, Quinn opened their other eye.

…Mint.

Alright, taming horses should be easy, even without their magic. Quinn thought it was a pretty good quest to start off with. Easy too, hopefully.

…Horses were easier to tame with magic mind control singing powers, right?
