Work Text:
It was a long day. Miles' teacher was kicking his ass, figuratively of course. The last thing he wanted was for the week to continue, but it was only a Tuesday. Almost half way there. At least school was over. As he was walking home, he had bumped into someone, then dropping all their stuff.
"I'm so sorry!! Here, let me help." As he reached down, he noticed the green hand trying to pick it up. "Oh, it's okay! Don't worry. Really!" The voice was soft and sweet, like smooth milk chocolate. Finally gaining courage to look at the stranger, he gasped. They're completely green from what he could see. A face mask and hood covering their face made it hard to see, but the glowing hazel-brown eyes made contact with his own. This person(?) is beautiful.
Blinking back to reality, he inwardly shook his head and smiled softly. "Sorry for staring! Here, is this your sketchbook?" Handing them the sticker covered book, he noticed that compression gloves. More importantly, only three fingers. "Oh yeah! Thanks- um... Sorry, what's your name?" They both went quiet until Miles burst out in giggles. "Ugh, where are my manners! I'm Miles. Miles Morales. You?"
Sticking a hand out, he shook the slightly shaky hand given to him. Soft, though calloused. "You can call me Mike! Or MJ! Either works! Nice to meet you Miles. And um... I'd really appreciate if you didn't tell anyone about...." Silence. "This whole situation?" They motioned to their entire body, causing more laughter from the dark skinned teen. "Of course! Oh, just wondering. What are your pronouns? I um.. I don't want to mess up." A huge smile on MJ's face (or he assumed was a smile, mouth being covered) showed him it was okay to ask.
"I use any! And by any, I mean any! How about you?" Not realizing they're hands were still connected, he walked with the mutant. "I'm still kinda figuring it out, but for now? He/they... I just realized! You're the first person I ever told about that!" Mike stopped walking.
"You trust me that much?" I just looked at her face. All that showed was shock. "Well... I guess. I mean, it feels like I've known you forever. I don't know why, but... It does. You know?" A nod was his reply as they continued to walk and talk, ending up in front of a random park an hour or so later. All their talking was just about each other and their families, friends as well.
Soon enough, the moon started to peek out. MJ brought Miles up a ladder, ending up with them sitting on a roof and looking out over the city horizon. "You know... I don't think I've gotten your number. Do you think we could share contact info?" The shorter asked, holding out their phone for the boy to type in. He just grabbed it and put in his number, giving it back to Mike.
Just in time too because soon his phone rang, the Sanrio theme playing. Raph as the caller ID.
"Heyyy big bro! Um... What's up?" Uh oh. Big brother never means a good thing. Miles had his experience with his friends/big sibling figures. He kept quiet, trying not to listen in when a panicked screaming came through the phone line, Mike just rubbing her temples and rolling his eyes. Though their smile was still present, meaning this was normal or just sweet, maybe both. "Okay Raphie! I'll be there in... 2 hours tops. Promise!" A laugh from the one sided conversation Miles could hear. He smiled at the angelic sound. Hopefully he'll hear it more often.
"Wanna walk me home, Miles? Or you just want to stare?" The (now known) turtle teased him, raising an imaginary eyebrow. Both laughed and Miles held out his hand, bowing like a gentleman from the 18th Century. "If you would allow me to, my lady." Miles winked, holding back a loud laugh.
Mike froze, face red and giggles. He knelt into a courtesy, taking the hand. "Why thank you, kind sir. How kind and chivalrous." The tried so hard to hide their fluster failing terribly.
They finally reached he floor, MJ giving directions by dragging Miles. "Almost there! One more-" He was cut off by running into a wall. A very human looking wall. A... Girl? She looked around Miles' age, give or take a year or two. "APRIL! I- uh... Hi?" How does MJ know like everyone!?! Jeez, he fell for a social butterfly. "MIKEY!?!" Oh no. More yelling. Miles tried to step behind Mike, but was stopped by a mocha colored hand, dragged in front of her.
"You. Aren't the sheriff's kid?" Damn it. "Yes..? Why?" MJ was taken away from him, April panicking immediately. "What... What do you want from him?" Silence.
Did she think...?
No. No she shouldn't.. He would never.
"Look, whatever you're thinking, you're wrong. I wouldn't do anything to hurt them. If I didn't, I would've wouldn't I? We've been hanging out all night!" Mike nodded, trying to get out of April's grip. "Exactly! So could you please let go of me? I need to get home before Raph kills me!... Not sure if I'm completely joking yet." Wait what?
"Fine! But... You do anything, what's your face, I'll kill you. And I won't care. Got it kid?" They rapidly nodded. Holy fuck this chick is terrifying. April walked backwards towards the apartment across the street, almost hitting the wall. Glaring.
"Sorry about her! She's just... Overprotective. Like all of my stupid siblings. Don't worry though, you won't be getting hurt on my watch!" She assured, a cute smile adoring their now uncovered mouth. He couldn't help but smile, MJ's smile truly contagious. "Got it buddy! Still want me to come to your manhole?" After all the talking, they learned basically everything about each other.
Except how Mike was made like that and how Miles could easily keep up with Mikey as he ran and jumped around.
Eh, probably not important.
Finally in front of the alley Miles easily memorized, they said their goodbyes. Hugs and last goodbyes and they were off. "Bye Miles! See you next week?" "Of course! See you then!" As Miles climbed through the dorm window, Ganke was waiting.
"Where have you been lover boy?" Huh- "What do you mean Ganke? No idea what you're talking about."
There was a sunflower sticker on his jacket and a graffiti covered mask in his arms. Oops...
