Chapter 1: The collapse

Chapter Text

On Saturday, 6 pm EST. Lower districts A, C and a portion of E collapsed, multiple giant sinkholes were found in said areas. The reason causing this has yet to be announced by the company but local sources say that it may be linked to the faction wide power outage that occurred 2 weeks ago, along with the recently reported vibrations in the ground. Status on the desecrated districts is still uninhabitable, and will be for at least a week until workers will be able to upgrade structural supports and mend any widespread damage. Therefore, the company has announced that all citizens affected will be moved to Crossroads where they will have rented out apartments to live in for the time being. Unfortunately, due to the size of the faction, only some positions will be guaranteed housing by the company. This includes Overseers, Company diplomats, Weapon engineers, Bio scientists, Statistical analysts, and any other positions that work above the 27th floor . However, if you don't meet these requirements, you can apply for shared living if you are related, under care or married to someone that is.Further updates will be provided once we have more information on the matter.

Forever praise the company and may Blackrock reign supreme.

If Hyperlaser didn’t have some sort of will to live, he would have torn the letter into pieces and repeatedly slammed his head against the wall until he died from brain damage. According to the company, he was officially homeless now. Great, amazing, crying tears of joy. In all honesty, this wasn’t the first time he’d been homeless. Being late on rent, getting kicked out because neighbors were complaining about the smell of corpses, he’d seen it all before. But this was the first time he was homeless in an entirely new faction

Blackrock, although cruel, controlling and mostly un caring about the wellbeing of any of their citizens, did however, care about the faction’s appearance. And hundreds of dirty demons laying out in the street isn't a very good look —even if it's in the lower district. So, what Hyperlaser would usually do when he was out of a house, was live in one of the many homeless shelters located around Blackrock. Sure, it wouldn’t be a 5 star hotel (or even a 2 star for that matter), but it did the job and kept him alive long enough to save enough money to rent out an apartment. This was crossroads though. A place where anything goes except free housing for some reason.

The mercenary groaned, face palming into his helmet. It was bad enough that they lost most of their electronics from the collapse —now having to resort to using paper out of all damn things— in addition, it was the middle of winter and Hyperlaser really didn't feel like contracting frostbite from sleeping out on the street (He’d already lost his ring finger from an unfortunate bounty during an even more unfortunate winter a few years ago).

So, it looked as if rooming with other demons was his only option, and as much as he appreciated Katana, the company would genuinely kill him on the spot if they found out he was sleeping with a demon from another faction. He would die so fast that the automated letter of resignation would be canceled mid-way because his corpse would already be turned into a heap of smokey ashes. Despite these mildly distressing thoughts, a part of the letter kept ringing in his head,

If you don't meet these requirements, you can apply for shared living if you are related, under care or married to someone that is.”

Marriage. Hyperlaser hadn’t really really thought about it that much due to the nature of his work. Even if he did find somehow that special someone it probably wouldn't last too long, but that didn’t mean he completely was against the idea. Right now Hyperlaser was desperate, desperate for a house, desperate to survive the winter, desperate to not die and if he needed a marriage partner to make that happen, you sure as hell bet he’d be the best god damn husband there ever was if it meant getting some housing. The main problem now was actually finding someone to marry. When you kill people for a living, friends —or potential marriage partners for that matter— aren’t exactly the first thing that pop up. damnit, who should I ask, who should I ask, who should I ask-

“Hyper, can you pass me that coffee from behind you? The lack of any energy drinks in this place is disgusting!!” A familiar voice called, snapping the mercenary from his thoughts.

Right, there it was, he and Subspace were settled in one of the shelters Blackrock had rented out for a night. The blue demon squinted at the other man, suddenly getting hit with what he would have described as “the absolute best and worst idea he'd ever had.” Subspace was a scientist.. a chemical scientist and weapon engineer to be exact, a position which meant that he would be one of the few that got guaranteed housing. Hyperlaser was now staring a hole into the scientist's forehead, brows scrunched beneath his mask. Praise the company, was he really about to ask him of all people, subpar shitmine, really?!?

“Subspace..,” the mercenary started, letting the silence of his pause drag out for a little too long. “D-do you want to marry me..,” Hyperlaser choked out through gritted teeth.

Subspace gave the mercenary an odd look before going back to what he was doing. “I’ll do it if you get me a ring,” he murmured, more focused on the newspaper he was currently reading.

The mercenary snorted, partly amused, “I’ll get you one of those cheap, neon green, plastic stretchy rings that have all the glitter on them.”

Subspace jolted up from where he was sitting, for a second, Hyperlaser would have sworn there were stars in the scientist’s eyes, “Thanks Hyperlaser!! Glad someone finally shares my vision!”

“I'm just joking- Wait, you actually want that crap?!” He gasped out.

Notes:

hii so i want to take this time to actually explain how I think blackrock works because in all of my blackrock fics I've mentioned the districts before and I've never really explained it. BASICALLY, blackrock is managed by a select group of individuals called 'the company', not much is known about them. Upper district for rich people, big businesses, attractions, high security, etc. Lower districts is where most of the housing is (people cant afford a 123823873 million house), smaller businesses and more crime stuff due to the lack of security. Also would like to note, that even though I said 'those who work above the 27th floor' don't actually do most of their work in the main building and prefer to remain in smaller buildings located around the main one. (you don't want to be above a lab testing explosives when you're reading statistics)
