Work Text:

Alana’s proposal was… comical, in Margot’s opinion.

It happened when they were having breakfast, in Alana’s home which Margot had all but officially moved into. She was there more often than not, most of her belongings took a permanent residence in Alana’s home, not that she had many in her home that weren't shared with Mason. She still had the Verger estate, though she was planning on selling it, as she preferred Alana’s comfy, two-story home. It was warm and happy, and it smelled of Alana, not like the Verger estate of which Mason had tainted everything.

She was sitting with Alana at the sidebar that most higher middle-class kitchens have, having blueberry waffles that Margot loved to make for the two of them on giddy mornings after. They ate in comfortable silence for the majority of it.

Alana was the one to break the silence. “I had a big, romantic day out planned for us today, but I’ll be honest, I am far too exhausted from everything that’s been happening at the hospital recently to do any of that.“

Alana didn't elaborate on the implication and Margot was glad for it. It always depresses her to hear about all the new inmates in the BSHCI or, god forbid, Lecter's occasional tantrums.

Margot took another bite of her last waffle and raised an eyebrow at Alana, silently telling her to move on and get to the point.

“And I’ve been excited to do this for so long now, so I figured I wouldn’t go through the trouble of making it such a big thing.“ Alana then got up from her seat with her pointer finger up, signaling that she'd be back. Margot watched her curiously as she took her purse from where it was hanging on the wall and started to search through it.

She dug through it for what Margot felt was an eternity, but was probably closer to three minutes now that she thinks back on it. When Alana had already taken everything out and put it back in twice, she sighed and hung it back up. She giggled a little when she saw that Margot had been watching her the whole time. Margot wanted to marry her on the spot.

Alana picked up the purse that was hung beside the one she had just searched. She didn't use that purse as much because it was smaller and less practical, but she says she only uses it on special occasions because it's cuter than her baggy, worn everyday purse.

It didn't take her long to find whatever she was looking for in that purse. It was small enough for her hand to completely close around it so Margot couldn't see it. Margot already knew what it was, she knew before Alana even stood up, but she wasn't going to cheapen the moment by expressing that. It already felt perfect.

Alana returned swiftly, as an apology for having taken so long, and placed a small black box on the counter, sliding it in front of Margot. Margot stared at it for a moment, taking in how tiny and simple the box was, despite it feeling like the biggest thing in the world. When she looked back up, Alana had that stupid smile spread across her face. All she said was, "Marry me?"

Margot laughed, out of both joy and disbelief. She had been expecting it, of course. She and Alana had been together for a year and a half then, and they had talked about the inevitability of marriage. But this was just so… casual, like Alana was just suggesting a movie to watch or asking for one of her fries while eating out. Not at all like she was asking Margot to make the biggest, most emotional, and expensive commitment of her life.

It all felt so unreal, and at the same time, the most real Margot had felt in a long, long time.

"Oh my god, Lana!" She said, still laughing. "Yeah! Yes!"

Alana was laughing with her when she opened the box to reveal a sleek, silver ring with an emerald green gemstone, carved in the shape of a skull encased in it. The sunlight pouring through the windows gleamed off of it, bright and brilliant and almost divine.

Alana barely had time to put it on Margot’s ring finger before Margot was out of her seat embracing her, nearly knocking Alana off of hers. The world stopped spinning as they kissed, and Margot finally believed that everything would be okay after all, as long as she was wrapped in the arms of this wonderful and adorable woman, soon to be her wife.

"I love you, Alana. So much," she had said.

Alana’s shirt dampened where Margot's eyes rested.

"I love you, Margot, always. Until the end of time."
