Work Text:

“Getoo, let’s go eat something. I’m starving!” The sound of a whiny Gojo filled the empty hallway. The sound of heels clicking against the floor accompanied the sound as well. Megumi looked up, eager to greet his childhood best friend, the one who can always rely on. When Megumi waved at Gojo with a sweet smile, Gojo didn't notice. Too fixated on pestering and annoying Geto. Megumi felt his heart ache slightly.

He always knew that Gojo had never thought of him as his best friend. No, not since they entered Tokyo Jujutsu High. Ever since then, their bond has gotten weaker, barely even talking to each other anymore unless it was an emergency. Despite all this, Megumi clung onto a ray of light within the darkness, hoping that one day Gojo Satoru, the strongest sorcerer alive, would one day go back to his old self.

Shoko turned to face Megumi, a worried look on her face. You're being silly, no one likes you. She just pities you. He felt tears form in his eyes. Megumi always had a bad childhood, everyone knew that. He lost his father when he was out on a mission when Megumi was younger. Megumi lost his sister to an incurable disease. He was often picked on in school for being the only one without a parent during a parent teacher conference, no parents show up for any one of Megumi’s plays in school and so on.

That is until a certain silver haired boy whose eyes shined as bright as the blue sky, sat next to him during recess. They found out they have little in common, from disking sweets to being poor or rich. They never once had a liking for the same thing. But they were best friends regardless, always hanging out with one another, inseparable or joined to the hip as one might say.

Megumi never felt that way. From a young age, he knew he was different from other children. He never liked the girls in his class, he only had eyes for Gojo Satoru. His one and only. If only Gojo liked him back… Gojo was the type of playful and mischievous boy all the girls would like. He was sweet, cheeky and funny. Serious when it was needed. Gojo never showed any sign of love towards Megumi. Even if he did, it was all a joke. Yet deep down, he hoped it wasn’t. But that was enough for Megumi. He was glad Gojo was his friend.

“..gumi… Megumi… Megumi!” Shoko shouted, her hand waving in front of his face. “Sorry Shoko… What were you saying?” Megumi asked apologetically. He was in such deep thought that he hadn’t noticed Shoko talking to him. “I was saying, Satoru asked if you want to go to a nearby bakery with him, Geto and I? He thinks their deserts are great. You know how he is, he has a sweet tooth and loves everything sweet.”

Shaking his head, Megumi politely declined her offer. He wouldn’t want to get in the way of their time with one another. Afterall, if Gojo wanted him to come along with them, he could’ve simply asked him personally.

.

.

Lying on his bed, Megumi scrolled through the phone Gojo had given him just a few years before. Originally, Megumi had refused Gojo’s gift. But, Gojo was persistent and annoyed Megumi to the point he had accepted the gift in the end. Just as Megumi was going to turn his phone off, a ping had alerted him of a new post by Shoko. Curiously, he clicked on the new notification. What he saw shattered his heart into pieces. Gojo feeding Geto like a couple. The tears that formed in his eyes slid down his cheeks. His eyelid growing heavy as sleep slowly ate him alive. He didn’t notice that it was already 1 AM. That mean’s Gojo, Geto and Shoko were having fun.

His heart ached whenever he thought of Gojo. He imagined Gojo and Geto having a wedding together, a wedding which Megumi will never be invited to. The thought of Gojo marrying someone else other than him shattered Megumi. The heartache Megumi was experiencing ate at him. He needed someone to comfort him at that moment. He summoned his divine dogs. They stared at him in worry as Megumi sobbed his heart out.

He felt his tears stain the dog's fur, he felt his body tremble, he didn’t want to think of Gojo anymore.

.

.

“Megumi! Promise me when we grow up, you’ll marry me! That way you and I can live together in a big big castle and I’ll protect you!” The young Gojo Satoru said to Megumi. What a blatant lie. Little naive Megumi needed his head. “Yes Satoru! I’ll marry you, promise to protect me and I’ll protect you too!” Little Gojo’s eyes lit up. Oh how happy Megumi would be to see Gojo’s eyes light up just one last time because of Megumi’s presence and not because of Geto. How he longed to have Gojo finally acknowledge his presence and not throw him aside like dirt.

The two little and naive children sealed their promise to one another with a pink promise. Oh how dumb and little they were. If Megumi had known how things would turn out, he would’ve never allowed Gojo to sit next to him that day.

.

.

Megumi woke up to the warm sunlight shining into his dormitory. His divine dogs were beside him. He would be forever grateful to them, even if they were just animals. They understood and listened to his pain in every way a human wouldn’t. He smiled fondly to himself.

Getting changed, he headed out of his dorm and to his classroom. As he stepped out, he saw Gojo standing outside of Geto’s dorm room, eagerly knocking on his door. If only Gojo would do that to him. An annoyed Geto stepped out from his dorm and Gojo wrapped his arms around him. Megumi’s already aching heart ached more than before. The sight before him was unreal to him. The two strongest, walking around like couples. A part of Megumi wanted to scream and lunge at them, another part of him wanted to cry and break down. The feelings Megumi was eating him alive right there and there.

As the duo got closer to where Megumi was standing, Geto gave a soft smile and waved to Megumi. Gojo ignored Megumi. Gojo pushed past Megumi, not even turning to say sorry or greet him. He ignored him as if Megumi didn’t exist to him.

Megumi felt another round of tears forming in his eyes but ignored the stinging of his nose and the tears. He silently walked to class behind the duo in front of him.

.

.

“Satoru and Megumi, you two have been assigned a Mission.” Looking up, Megumi saw Yaga looking down at him and Satoru. “Meet me outside school tonight at 8. Don’t be late.” Yaga added sternly, eyeing the mischievous Gojo Satoru beside Megumi. He playfully raised his hands and winked at Yaga.

.

.

“Your mission is to deal with some pesky grade 1 curse while retrieving several civilians in the building.” Yaga was busy explaining the mission to the two of them. Megumi was busy being distracted by something else. Gojo Satoru. Megumi never had the time to stare at Gojo properly. Gojo would always avoid Megumi, ignore him or just leave when Megumi approached.

Getting into the car, Megumi sat one empty seat away beside Gojo. Megumi looked down nervously while Gojo looked out the window, ignoring Megumi’s presence. Megumi looked towards Gojo from time to time, trying to not make it so obvious that he was admiring his childhood best friend, his crush and his one and only.

“Are you done sneaking side glances or what?” Gojo asked, annoyance very visible in his tone, yet he did not even turn to look at him. Megumi felt as if a bucket of ice cold water was splashed on him. Had he made it so obvious? Would Gojo hate him even more now? Megumi nodded his head nervously, deciding that it was best not to lie and talk to Gojo right now.

.

.

“You go fight the curse. I’ll go search for the survivors. We’ll meet back here after.” He didn’t even bother to look at Megumi. Instead, he teleported into the building, leaving Megumi alone to look for the curse himself. This mission is going to be painful.

.

.

“Damn you!” Megumi screamed at the curse. Instead of a grade 1, it had been a special grade curse. Something that Megumi was not qualified for. Megumi coughed up blood. His body was littered with bruises, cuts and deep wounds. If only Gojo was here, he would be strong enough. No! You shouldn’t be distracted during a battle, you of all people should know better, Megumi. The disruption in concentration allowed the curse to quickly strike Megumi.

Blood dripped down Megumi’s injured forehead. Damn, this curse is tough. Megumi quickly summoned rabbit escape in an attempt to get away from the curse and call Gojo for help. Luckily for him, the curse was temporarily confused the curse and allowed Megumi to get a safe distance away. He ran, ran faster than ever before. He took out the phone Gojo had gotten him and dialed his number.

Megumi sadly ran out of luck this time. Not only did Gojo not pick up, the curse managed to catch up to Megumi and attempted to attack Megumi, causing him to loose balance and drop his phone. The curse stepped on the phone and the action caused a loud crunch to come from the phone. Megumi’s heart sank. That was the phone Gojo got for him… How will he afford one now? He’ll have to ask Gojo for another but seeing as Gojo is ignoring him, it seems like he’ll be without a phone for awhile. The curse attacked Megumi relentlessly. Megumi felt his vision fade black, he felt blood drip down his nose and mouth, the pain and ache he was experiencing not only in his heart and his body as well was unbearable. Megumi passed out with Gojo Satoru on his mind.

.

.

.

.

.

Bright light invaded Megumi’s vision. He heard the sound of machines beeping around him. What happened? When Megumi turned his head, he saw Shoko and Geto beside his bed, sleeping peacefully. Megumi smiled. He was glad that people were there to look after him while he was asleep. Yet, there was a hole in Megumi’s heart. Gojo wasn’t there… You always knew he never cared. He was just young, he never meant what he said.

Megumi sighed sadly. As he stared out the window, admiring the beautiful view outside while waiting for his friends to wake up.

.

.

“Your vitals seem well. You can be discharged today. Luckily Gojo found you in time and defeated the curses. Otherwise you’d be gone.” Shoko said with a stern tone in her voice when she turned to look at Megumi. He smiled nervously at her. Getting off the bed, Megumi picked up his neatly folded clothes and went ahead to change, excited to get back to class.

“Megumi, we need to talk.” A serious Gojo approached Megumi. Megumi turned around to see Gojo looking down at him through his shades, no smile on his face. Not waiting for Megumi’s answer, Gojo grabbed onto Megumi’s wrist and forcefully pulled him into an empty classroom and shut the door behind them.

Megumi rubbed his now red and hurting wrist as he glared up at Gojo, his eyes full of hatred and resentment towards the taller man. “What do you want?” Megumi soat angrily at the man in front of him. Despite the rude question, Gojo ignored it and looked down at Megumi.

His blue eyes stared into Megumi’s green eyes. “You're really annoying you know? You think I don't feel you looking at me, but I do. The only reason I started ignoring you during our first year was because you're insufferable and annoying. You kept clinging onto me like a pesky insect.” Gojo said with no remorse. Megumi stared at Gojo, his emotions all over the place. This isn't the Gojo Satoru I know and love… No, the real one wouldn’t be so mean. “Never talk to me or look at me ever again.” Ah… there it is. Gojo’s true feelings towards me. I should've known. The tears Megumi had always pushed down resurfaced in an instant. When Gojo left, the tears flowed down uncontrollably. With his heart finally shattering, his first and only love gone, Megumi spiraled into the depths of depression.

.

.

.

“Gumi… are you okay?” Shoko eyed Megumi worriedly, her eyes staring into his. Just like how Gojo’s eyes stared back at Megumi’s that fateful day. “You’ve been acting odd since last friday. Are you okay?” Megumi nods, he couldn’t bring himself to tell Shoko the truth.

“You’ve been acting depressed. I can’t help but feel worried. You're not eating and drinking as much, you always stare off into space in class or during missions with me.” Shoko patted his back gently while she continued sucking on the lollipop in her mouth. Once again, Megumi nodded.

.

.

“Shoko and Megumi, there's a mission for you. Come with me.” Yaga called out. He walked out to the school's entrance, Megumi and Shoko trailing behind him quietly.

“There was a report of disappearances in a nearby building complex. We have evacuated the people in the building. Our sources say that the disappearances were caused by a grade 1 curse. Please handle this curse together. We wouldn't want another repeat of what happened last time.”
Yaga said, looking at Megumi with a concerned look. Stop giving me that look. Megumi wasn’t weak, why was everyone looking at Megumi like that? Why was everyone booking at him like he was weak? God, he hates this.

.

Megumi clasps his hands together to create the proper shadow puppet and summons one the twin wolves to act as a lookout for the curse. Megumi, Shoko and the white divine dog venture deeper into the abandoned complex building, making sure to keep an eye and listen closely to any sounds.

They stumbled upon an empty room. The pipes in the room were protruding out from the wall and connected to almost every part of the room. “No progress at all. Do you think we should split up?” Megumi asked, annoyed that no progress was being made at all. This is so frustrating. Shoko shook her head. She probably thinks I’m weak. She probably thinks I can handle a curse on my own. “Megumi, I’m worried. I don’t want something like the incident before to happen again.” Glaring at Shoko, he walks towards one of the pipes. Out of curiosity, he touches it. As expected, nothing happens.

“MEGUMI!”

The sound of Shoko’s shout filled the air in the empty room. Megumi looked down to see himself being dragged into a black gooey hole in the floor. Divine dog was barking loudly as well. Trying to get away from whatever was pulling him down, Megumi struggled and kicked at this hands. Fear swallowing him whole. Please. Please. Please. Please let me live! Fear took over and he scrambled to grab one of the nearby pipes. But to no avail, he was dragged down into the black gooey substance.

.

.

.

The room Megumi was dragged into wasn’t dark. It looked more like one of the places in the complex building where Megumi and Shoko did not explore yet. The curse stood in front of him, a grin on its face. Megumi stared at the curse. The curse stared back. Then finally, the curse lunged towards Megumi, Its fist drawn back and ready to land a heavy punch on Megumi’s face. Luckily, he dodged it just in time and the curse’s fist landed against the wall behind the place where Megumi was first standing. The wall was broken by the harsh impact, forming a huge and deep hole.

Megumi was dumbstruck. How could a grade 1 curse be so strong with its punches? He knew to be careful around this curse and decided to summon Nue. He quickly claps his hands together to imitate the shape of wings and summons Nue. The bird swoops down from the shadows above and lands a successful attack on the curses’ arm before quickly retreating back to the sky above where the curse could not reach.

Megumi and Nue took turns to attack the curse, making it confused on who to attack first. When Megumi was about to attack again, he felt a jabbing pain on his arm. He looked down to see one of the curses' fingers. Blood spewed out from Megumi’s injured arm. It hurt. He cried out in pain. How could he have been so careless!

Nue quickly swooped down to attack the curse, seeing his master injured and his opponent distracted. Yet, the curse was quickly adapting and managed to land a fatal blow to Nue, killing it. Megumi stared at Nue’s lifeless body, fearing coursing through his veins and a ringing sound ringing against his ears.

The curse, sensing that Megumi was distracted, took the opportunity to attack and punched Megumi in his stomach multiple times. Megumi wanted to run and scream. He couldn’t run due to the lack of energy because he hadn’t eaten as much to replenish his stamina. He wanted to scream because he wasn’t even strong enough to kill a simple grade 1 curse. How pathetic. A familiar voice in his brain sounded out. It sounded like Gojo’s voice but Megumi didn’t want to believe it. Gojo wouldn’t say something like that. Would he?

Megumi recalled the things Gojo had said to him that day. It hurt him more than the curse punching and kicking him right now. He wanted to fight back but he just didn’t have the strength to do it. Megumi smiles to himself when he remembered the worried look on Shoko’s face when she asked if he had been eating well. If only that was Gojo. He smiled to himself, content that at least Geto and Shoko would be there for Gojo when Megumi passed.

And with that, he extended both his arms forward at a slight upward angle with their fists closed and recited the incantation, "With this treasure, I summon Mahoraga.” He knew it worked when he heard roaring sounds, followed by the screams from the curse being torn apart. Megumi knew it was a matter of time before he bleeds to death. He closes his eyes with Gojo Satou, his best friend, his first and last love on his mind.

.

.

.

When Gojo arrived to where Megumi was taken, the sight before his eyes shook him. In front of him was the end result of a blood bath. The curse spirit was nowhere in sight, the walls in the room damaged beyond repair and… his blessing sitting upright, eyes closed and with a smile. He felt his heart stop for just a moment before he ran to shake Megumi awake.

“Megumi. Megumi! Blessing! Wake up! You're just sleeping, please wake up!” He cried. The man in his arms did not stir awake. Despite Gojo’s numerous attempts to awaken the spiky haired man. His tears dripped onto Megumi’s lifeless form. His Megumi. What did his Megumi do to deserve this outcome? The innocent man did nothing wrong. He had always been picked on by others and left out. Gojo never wanted to hurt his Megumi like other people did. But he did in the end. Gojo Satoru, the world's strongest Jujutsu sorcerer, couldn’t even save his blessing.

His mind flashes back to that day, the day where he insulted Megumi. He didn’t know what came over him. Ever since they started their 1st years, he just felt that Megumi had became increasingly clingy and annoying, following him around wherever Gojo went. Gojo had a crush on the man when he was younger, but he lost feelings for him when they went into their first year in Jujutsu High. He started hanging out with Geto more, ignoring and pushing Megumi to the side.

Regret hit him like a truck. He felt lost and stranded. Megumi, his light to his darkness, the one who would be with him forever. Gojo recalls the promise they made years ago, the one where they swore to protect one another. He broke it. He failed.

“Megumi, my blessing, I’m sorry. Rest well, I’ll wake you up when we’re back at Jujutsu High.” He was in denial.

.

.

.

.

“I’m sorry Satoru, he’s dead.” Shoko said. Her voice as monotone and empty as ever. She removed the glove on her hand and looked at Gojo.He looked down at Megumi’s corpse. The body felt too cold, too cold for his liking. “I’m sorry Shoko. I didn’t quite catch that. Could you repeat?” He didn’t want to believe it. His Megumi wasn’t gone, he wasn’t dead. This was all just some sick pranks right?

“I’m sorry Gojo. I’m afraid he’s dead.”

A painful scream could be heard coming from the medical bay.

.

“Gojo, stop this!” Yaga screamed at the crazed man before him. Blue eyes looked up and stared into brown eyes. The majestic blue eyes everyone has come to love and admire was now filled with denial, anger and sadness. Geto and Shoko could do nothing but watch helplessly as their friend descended into the depths of depression over his dead classmate.

Gojo hugged Megumi’s body tightly. He wouldn't let go. He would protect his Megumi with his life. Gojo cried as he stared down at his love. The ground beneath them shook furiously. It became hard to breathe. As much as they pleaded for Gojo to stop the madness he was causing at once, their pleas were all left on deaf ears as Gojo mourned the loss of his first love.

If Gojo could go back, he would’ve spent his time with Megumi everyday and all day, never once daring to leave his first love's presence. Hearing Megumi’s voice would be a blessing for him. To hear Megumi call out for him, to hear him say those words, it would be a dream come true. He smiled while looking down at his sleeping lover. He looks so beautiful.

“Satoru. Please stop.”

The familiar voice shook him awake. He looked up. Megumi? But… he’s dead, in his arms. How was he-

“Satoru, please stop. I love you.” His weakness had always been Megumi Fushiguro.

The ground stopped trembling. It was suddenly easier to breathe than before. Shoko and Geto looked down at their best friend. His head looking down and arms clutched around Megumi’s body. They rushed down immediately, ignoring the cries of the other teachers and Yaga to stop what they were doing.

They didn’t care. Their friend needed their comfort. They had to be there for him. Shoko and Geto hugged Gojo tight as he cried his heart out. Tears flowing down his cheeks and dripping onto Megumi’s uniform.

.

.

.

.

The night was cold and snowy. Gojo trudged through the endless snow and stopped in front of a grave. ‘Megumi Fushiguro’ was carved into it. Gojo squatted down, his forehead touching the cold stone.

“Megumi. My blessing. I wish I didn't say those awful things to you. If I could take it all back, I would. I never realized how important you were to me until I lost you,” Gojo gulped nervously. “I work at Jujutsu high now. I’m teaching the two most lively students ever with Geto and Shoko. I know you would’ve loved to meet them.” Gojo sighed a shaky breath after what he had all said. He placed a bouquet of Himalayan poppies. Gojo chuckled under his breath as he imagines what Megumi’s reaction would be when he gifts Megumi one of the rarest flowers in the world.

“The Himalayan poppies reminded me of you. Rest well Megumi, I’ll come back soon. I love you, Megumi Fushiguro.” Gojo walks away from the grave. Unaware that Megumi’s spirit was watching him from afar.

“I love you too, Gojo Satoru.”
