Work Text:

Thanks to American refugees, Thanksgiving is one of the few familiar holidays that is celebrated in the Encanto.

Well, familiar to the resident nurse that is.

But, there is one thing that she isn't quite familiar with.

It is well-known throughout the whole of the Encanto that Bruno, Camilo, and Félix are all turkey junkies. Not to mention that they execute increasingly elaborate plans to steal it out from under Julieta's careful nose. Even the more mischievous members of the family and even the village make bets on whether or not they succeed in making off with the oven-roasted bird. This was very much to the chagrin of the usually pleasant healer and it seemed that no amount of whacks to their hollow heads with her rolling pins or smacks to their greedy paws with her wooden spoons would make them stop.

Until Bruno left...

The thievery stopped then with both of them telling her that it just wasn't the same without Bruno. Part of Julieta felt that they stopped because Bruno was the brains of their group. But, a more insistent part could see why it just wouldn't be the same and would only be a painful reminder of what they had lost.

Then... He returned.

Part of Julieta dreaded what he would come up with this year and another part was glad of things returning to normal. But, another part thinks that he won't even do it anymore after everything he went through with his ten years of self-isolation in the walls. Maybe that was what had made her let her guard down and made it all the easier for the turkey to vanish from the kitchen.

Camilo was distracting Julieta by pretending to be a random villager whose son was injured. Félix further distracted her by telling her that the farmers were being hard on Pepa again which technically wasn't a lie. Bruno himself was tasked with snatching the turkey and was just about to leave the kitchen with it when...

"Bru- Dad? What are you doing?"

Bruno froze and turned to see a thoroughly confused Kate.

"Uh..." Bruno fumbled before suddenly shouting. "YOU SAW NOTHING!"

The frazzled seer dove out the window and ran away with the turkey so fast that one would swear he teleported.

This only further confused the poor nurse which was thankfully ended by Julieta returning with a broken rolling pin.

"Uh... What happened to your rolling pin?"

"Chepe has a very hard skull." Julieta answered.

"What did he do this time." Kate sighed.

"He thought it would be a great idea to try to make mi hermana cry." Julieta glared.

"You should've taken the metal one." Kate smirked.

"Agreed." Julieta nodded before noticing, "¡Ay, esas ratitas podridas!"

Kate was taken aback by the rare display of Julieta's rage.

"Who did it?!" Julieta snarled.

"It... It was Bruno..." Kate gulped, "I don't know why he did it."

Julieta sighed.

"Julieta?"

"It's... It's fine." Julieta rolled her eyes, "I always keep a spare in the cold box."

"Oh..." Kate nodded, "So, this happens often?"

"Yes!" Julieta gritted out, "Those three always try to steal the turkey every time I make one!"

"Three?"

"Camilo, Félix, and Bruno!" Julieta snarled, "They're all turkey addicts!"

"Ohh, I see."

Julieta grumbled in Spanish as she pulled the spare turkey out of the cold box. Even Kate could tell that the irritated healer was using words that no good Catholic should ever use as she basted, seasoned, and stuffed the turkey. She had just put it in the oven to cook it when Alma came running in.

"What happened?!" Alma fretted.

"They did it again!" Julieta growled.

"Did wh..." Alma began to ask before realizing, "Oh... They made off with it again..."

"Yep."

"Do you have a spare?"

"Yep."

"Are you cooking it?"

"Yep."

"Dinner is going to be late?"

"Yep."

"Very well." Alma sighed even though Kate could just about see a smile, "I will inform the others."

"Gracias, mamá." Julieta smiled a bit.

"Anytime, mija." Alma answered before leaving to inform the others.

Needless to say, those three thieves ate their ill-gotten turkey and were delighted at getting to eat a second one as Julieta groused under her breath.
