Work Text:

“So how have things been going with Hoseok?” Jimin asked Yoongi, tilting his head up slightly to look at him in the rear mirror of the car.

The four of them - Yoongi, Namjoon, Jimin, and Taehyung - were in Jimin’s van, off to do some errands together. Yoongi and Namjoon were in the back, because Taehyung had called shotgun with his customary grin and puppy eyes, and neither of them had fought him too hard on it. The second row of seats was captain’s chairs, anyway, so it wasn’t that big of a deal to be in the back. Not like being cramped in a sedan or anything.

“Oh, you know, okay,” Yoongi said, sounding extremely blasé.

Jimin had introduced the two of them, finally, after weeks of telling both parties that he thought they’d really hit it off. They’d had the one date that Jimin was aware of, but he didn’t want to seem like a meddler, so he hadn’t really pressed for details on how it had gone.

But it had been three weeks, and he was only able to stave off curiosity for so long.

“Just okay?” Jimin asked. “Have you guys talked about setting up a second date?”

“Oh!” Yoongi replied absently, looking out the window. “We’ve already gone on four.”

“Four dates in three weeks?” Taehyung suddenly shouted in amazement, whirling around in his seat. “That sounds like more than just okay to me!”

Yoongi made a little embarrassed noise and slunk down in his seat a little.

“He’s, you know, a lot of fun to be around,” he muttered shyly, so quietly that Jimin almost couldn't hear him from the driver’s seat.

“You’re fun too,” Namjoon said staunchly, always ready to stem Yoongi’s tendency to downplay himself before it even started.

“Well,” Yoongi replied with a half smile, “not like Hoseok is. He’s very…refreshing.”

“But you’d say that it’s been a success so far?” Jimin pressed, smiling at his friend through the mirror still.

“Well, I don’t want to be presumptuous,” Yoongi demurred, hugging his arms around his chest and smiling gently to himself, “it’s still very early.”

A quieter sort of connection, then, Jimin thought to himself.

“Hey, isn’t that Hoseok right there?” Taehyung suddenly gasped, pointing off to the sidewalk on the opposite side of the road, nearly poking Jimin in the face.

“Hey!” Jimin protested laughingly.

In the back row, Yoongi threw himself as far to the side as he could without taking his seatbelt off, crowding up to Namjoon, who spluttered at the unexpected contact.

“It is Hoseok!” Yoongi cried.

There the man in question was, striding purposefully down the sidewalk, walking the opposite direction that the van was going. He hadn’t spotted them, though he’d soon be even with them - and then past.

Fortunately, the van was stopped waiting for a red light at that moment. Without any hesitation, Yoongi unbuckled his seatbelt and pressed himself up to the far side of the van, practically placing himself in Namjoon’s lap.

“Hey, woah!” Namjoon said, half-laughing.

Yoongi ignored him, and started yanking on the handle of the window. It was a simple sliding pane - no powered button or crank or the like - but it seemed perversely determined to stay shut.

Yoongi shrieked in wordless frustration, his whole body jerking with his efforts to pull on the handle. It just wouldn’t unlatch. Mere meters away, Hoseok walked onwards heedless of the drama contained within the van, surely to be out of earshot in only a few moments. Taehyung had twisted around in his seat to watch what Yoongi was doing, so he met Namjoon’s eyes over Yoongi’s straining back. Namjoon had leaned back as far as he could, and had his hands helplessly up in the air, unable to avoid being jostled. He and Taehyung stared at each other in bemusement, rendered speechless by their friend’s sudden burst of unusual energy.

Jimin laughed, equally bemused, as Yoongi continued to growl and tug on the window, hard enough to make the whole van rock on its tires.

“Yoongi, you need to-” Jimin started helpfully, at the same time Namjoon said “Can I-”

Just then, with a shout of triumph, Yoongi finally got the window open. He stuck his head out fully, resting his hands on the frame of the window, careless of how his butt was sticking up into the middle of the van.

“HOSEOK!” he yelled, as loud as he could.

Jimin, Namjoon, and Taehyung all leaned and shifted so they had line-of-sight on the man in question, to see if he would hear Yoongi or not. Sure enough, Hoseok’s head whipped around, and above his sunglasses they could see his forehead wrinkled up in confusion. Yoongi snaked his arm out the window and started waving it wildly, his loose sleeve slipping down, leaving his bare, pale forearm to gleam in the sun.

They could all spot the moment that Hoseok saw Yoongi - his eyebrows shot up and his face was transformed with a huge smile and he pointed to the van and leaned back in laughter. Yoongi giggled and kept waving. Hoseok made a big heart over his head with both of his arms and yelled YOOOOOONGIIIIII back at him.

“Yoongi, light’s about to change!” Jimin warned through his own giggles.

So Yoongi actually blew a kiss at Hoseok, who instantly blew one back, and then quickly sat back down in his seat, jostling Namjoon again as he went, ending up grinning and flushed and with his hair all tousled and wild once he sat. He got his seatbelt buckled just as Jimin eased the car forward. Hoseok vanished among the other pedestrians and was soon out of sight.

Namjoon reached over and slid the window closed, not saying a word. They drove on in silence for another block, everyone digesting what had just happened.

“So,” Jimin finally said, trying to stay blank-faced but unable to keep the glee out of his voice, “just okay?”

“Pretty great, I guess,” Yoongi said, and grinned.

Namjoon snorted.
