loving you is as easy as breathing

Summary:

After reading the Kimetsu no Yaiba series, you regretted how Yoriichi never got to slay Muzan. Doing so would have saved countless lives, and irrational as it was, you were upset that he never tried harder to track down the demon progenitor and end the war between humans and demons before it continued on for another few centuries.

Reborn into the Sengoku Era of Tsugikuni Yoriichi, you're faced with an impossible decision. One you ultimately fail-
But fate gives you one more chance in the form of a reincarnated Yoriichi as Kamado Tanjiro.

Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

As you reluctantly finish the last chapter of Kimetsu no Yaiba on the illegal website that definitely pirated its content (you’re too poor to buy the books), a single tear trickles down your smooth cheek and meets its end as it rolls off your chin.

Meets its end, like more than half the cast of this very manga. You sigh at the irony.

Glancing up at the clock observing you from the wall, you find that it’s already 3:00 am in the morning– you’ve just spent the past 6 hours reading the entire storyline in one go. You know you should head to bed, having already brushed your teeth before taking on the manga. But a feeling holds you back from carrying on with your daily motions; a feeling of regret, you think.

Although not your favorite, Yoriichi held a special place in your heart due to his innocence and ever-standing love for all living creatures. His sense of humanity surpassed everything and made him the perfect opposite of what demons stood for. But even still, you held resentment against the perfect creature: while blessed with unreachable skill, he refused to pour his all into destroying Muzan. You knew it was irrational, cruel, illogical– how could you force a man who had already lost so much in his life to abandon even more and track down the king of demons? No one should be forced to make such large sacrifice.

And yet, in his legacy, hundreds of thousands died pursuing that very goal. The deaths of so many characters you held dear could have been saved. At the cost of Yoriichi’s happiness or possibility of living as normal of a life he could get, sure. But even still…

You abruptly stand from your chair, ashamed of your cold, calculating mindset. You wouldn’t be able to endure as much as he did, so you had no right to judge him. Sighing as you make your way to your bed, you drown in pity for both the legendary figure and those that died for the sake of the greater good. If only things were different.

If only.
