Kobold's Attempt at a Devblog

Summary:

A devblog on a website that's not really built for blogs. Game design and coding done by a fanfic writer. What could possibly go wrong?

Chapter 1: Introduction

Chapter Text

Hello, and welcome to my new…thing.

I’m not sure whether or not I’ve mentioned this before, but I’m a Computer Science major, and I’ve also tried my hand a few times at making simple games. I’ve never really made anything worth mentioning-tiny, complete test cases, or the hollow shells of projects that ended up being overly ambitious.

I’ve decided to try again with something relatively simple, but with a slight twist-that is, documenting my overall process in what, I suppose, you could generously call devblogs. These are primarily to help with my own planning, but I’m also going to inflict these upon you.

This sort of thing would normally go up on an actual, you know, blog…but, then again, it's not like I don’t have experience posting things on ao3 that probably don’t belong here…

So, I’ll be posting updates on my progress here as I go. You can expect some degree of jank in the writing (as well as the code), as I’m writing about each step before, after, and sometimes during the actual process of doing them. So, I might suddenly change tenses at times, if I decide not to smooth that over while editing.

I might also use technical terms at times. I’ll try to explain them as I go, but feel free to ask in the comments if I’m not clear enough, or just forget to cover something.

Ah, and I sort of implied this already, but I’m still very much an amateur. Anyone with actual experience in game design, programming, UX, or anything else that goes into making even the simplest of games might want to avert their gazes. Or get popcorn, whatever floats your boat.

Constructive criticism is welcome-one of the points of all this is self-improvement.

Let's see, what else...ah, yes. I'll primarily be using Unity, and Visual Studio Code. I'll post links to any assets that I end up using along the way.

Finally, and just to be clear, this isn’t taking up any of my usual writing time. I write fics during a specific time period each day, while these are/will be written at whatever time I happen to get around to programming.
