alec is 20/21 in this story
today was THE day. The day he would finally have top surgery he would finally be able to breathe without feeling the grip of the binder on his chest reminding him that he was not a "real" man. he had waited all those years for that moment and it had finally arrived.
his phone rang as he put on his shirt, he answered without checking the number, it was probably his best friend to give him one last good luck.
he immediately cursed himself when he heard his mother's voice.
"hey, Lilly."
Alec bit his lip and felt his stomach muscles contract. he had moved to where no one knew him or knew his deadname and hearing it again after all that time was more painful than even he thought.
"what is it," he said without answering the greeting. he had not spoken to his parents since he ran away from home the night before he turned 18. they had never accepted him, not just his being trans, but him in general. whatever he was or did was and always would be wrong. he had grown up dragging himself down, desperately trying to please his parents, always failing. then when he was 15 he found out he was trans, at first he had only told one of his friends at the time but somehow his parents found out and from there it all started to get worse, as if it wasn't already going bad.
And after all those years he was still afraid of disappointing his mother, that's why he didn't close the call.
"I heard you're going to have that operation today, I thought I should call you," his mother said in a kind voice, alec decided not to ask how she had come to know. he still didn't let his guard down.
"Why?" he asked.
"can't I call my daughter sometime?"
"no since you have a son" there was a long pause, during which Alec had almost found the courage to turn off the phone, but his mother spoke before he could make up his mind.
"you're still in time to change-"
"fuck off."
and ended the call, throwing the phone on the bed.
He ran his hands through his hair taking a deep breath to calm himself, his hands were shaking, perhaps from anger, but he would not let his mother ruin that day.
