Lottery Luck

Summary:

He had done the same thing he had done the last few days. Get up, stare in the mirror, and put on his hat before continuing his day as normal. However, Everest didn't know about one silly little detail.

Midnight was coming over today.

He never planned for Midnight to come over. Midnight had decided to invite himself to Everest's apartment. After all, he had a key for a reason, right?

Aka: Everest cuts his hair because he had an episode (me too girlypop), and Midnight helps fix the damage. <3

Work Text:

Today was day 3 of Everest trying to hide his hair. He had buzzed it in a moment of panic, and decided that instead of going to a salon and getting it fixed, he would hide it under his hat and hope nobody saw the choppy strands popping out at the back of his head until it grew back.

The lock clicked twice as Midnight opened the door. They slipped past the kitchen and went into Everest’s bedroom, where Everest was scrolling through social media on his phone. Midnight opened the door silently, and slowly crept up to Everest’s spot on the bed, facing the wall.

“Surprise!” Midnight spoke. Everest jumped and rolled over, holding his phone out as if it would somehow help him defend himself.

“Dude,” Everest sighed, “why are you here? You scared the shit out of me.” Midnight hummed before laying on the bed beside Everest. “Nothing, just wanted to say hi. We haven’t talked much over the last few days, so I thought I’d pop in and see how you were doing.” Midnight smiled, and Everest rolled his eyes playfully. “Make yourself comfortable then, because I had no plans of getting up for what, the next 4 hours?”

Midnight rolled over, gazing at Everest. They noticed something was… different. They put their hand up near Everest’s head, before snatching his hat and putting it on their own head as they had done many times before.

Everest’s eyes widened as he realized what had just happened. He turned his head to Midnight with confusion and distress. Midnight’s lips were pressed together in a thin line, clearly assessing the damage. Everest felt like he was going to cry, watching Midnight’s eyes flick around his head and eventually land on his face with a pitiful expression. He could feel his lips begin to wobble, but he tried his best to keep tears from spilling.

“So… haircut?” Midnight said quietly. Everest nodded silently. Midnight reached his hand to Everest’s face slowly, as if he would run away if he moved too fast. Their hand finally landed on the side of Everest’s face, and they dragged their thumb across Everest’s cheek. Everest leaned into the touch.

“I can try and fix it if you want. I can’t bring any of the length back, but I can help with the uneven-ness.” Midnight smiled softly. Everest looked at him, into his dark blue eyes. He could tell that Midnight felt sorry for him, but genuinely wanted to help him feel better. Everest took a deep breath.

“Thank you.” Everest said, feeling small tears begin to roll down his cheeks. Midnight let out a sigh, almost of relief, but also of fondness. “Of course.”

It didn’t take them long to set up in the bathroom. Everest was sitting on a towel in the empty bathtub, while Midnight sat on the rim of the tub, with Everest between his legs. Midnight tapped Everest’s head.

“Are you ready?” Midnight said. “Ready as I’ll ever be.” Everest responded.

Midnight picked up the pair of scissors from where he had placed them on the soap tray and began cutting. They were silent as they worked, occasionally tilting Everest’s head to one side or down. Everest liked the way Midnight touched his head, firmly holding his head still, but not painfully grabbing him.

Minutes flew by as they sat there, yet it felt like seconds to the two. Soon, Midnight was done, carding his hands through Everest’s hair to get out as much of the loose hair as he could.

“Alright,” Midnight finally spoke, “are you ready to look?” Everest hesitated for a second, but nodded. He brushed the hair off of his shoulders, and got up to look in the mirror.

His hair wasn’t nearly as long as it was before he originally cut it, but Everest knew it would take a while to get to the length he had. Now his hair was short, but it was clean, looking like a longer buzz cut. He put his hand on the back of his head, feeling the hair brush against his fingers.

“What do you think?” Midnight said from beside him, looking at Everest’s face in the mirror. “I like it.” Everest spoke softly. Midnight smiled, wrapping his arms around Everest’s waist and placing his cheek on Everest’s chest. Everest responded by wrapping one arm around Midnight, and putting his free hand on Midnight’s head, stroking his hair. “I’m glad.” Midnight responded.

They stood there for a minute, rocking from side to side in each other’s arms. They both felt warm on the inside, as if somebody had wrapped a blanket around the two.

“I never did say thank you, did I?” Everest spoke up after a minute. Midnight pulled his head back to look at Everest. “I don’t think so, but I’ll take one.” He said playfully. “Well then, thank you Mid.” Everest said before leaning down and pushing Midnight’s bangs back with his hand, and leaving a peck on Midnight’s forehead.

Midnight chuckled at the gesture. “Aww, I thought I’d at least get one on the lips!” Everest rolled his eyes before leaning down once more and giving Midnight a chaste kiss on the lips. When Everest pulled his head back up, he had a fond smile plastered on his face.

Suddenly, Midnight stuck out his tongue. “Eww, you’ve got to take a shower or something man.” He grimaced, pulling a small piece of hair off of his tongue. Everest burst out laughing at this. “Okay, I will.” He responded, letting go of Midnight to go pick up the towel that had much of the cut hair in it. However, instead of leaving, Midnight stood in the bathroom, watching Everest.

“…Are you gonna leave?” Everest questioned. “No, I think I’ll be fine right here.” Midnight smirked, obviously joking. “Ok you idiot, get out before I make you get out.” Everest smiled, pointing to the door. Midnight laughed loudly. “Fine, be that way.” Midnight said before leaving.

Everest put the hair pieces in the trashcan, and smiled to himself, thinking. “I must have lottery luck or something.”

Notes:

Thank you for reading this very self-indulgent fic! If you don't know the characters, Everest is mine (donnietheterrapin on tumblr) and Midnight belongs to nightdrawz on tumblr!

If you know me for my Yellue fics, I promise I am slowly working on 3 of them in the background, but they probably won't be done for a while so please be patient!

Bye bye :3
