new love

Summary:

There's a moment, when Riku glances across the field and catches a glimpse of Sora and Kairi grinning over at him, that his chest tightens with a now-familiar feeling.

He returns the smile, easy and genuine, and at their insistent beckoning he rises from his seat in the grass; patting away the loose blades that had gotten stuck to his pants, Riku begins a steady walk down the hill to meet them halfway.

“You looked lonely up there.” Sora opens with, reaching out with a hand — the other firmly clasped in Kairi's.

A visit to Corona, and the whispered words spoken therein.

Notes:

(it's too young to be a true love)

this is literally just a prose experiment featuring tooth-rotting fluff of the trio being happy together, there's not much more to say; title taken from the BOYS LIKE GIRLS song of the same name (which is really good pls go listen to that whole album honestly)

Work Text:

There's a moment, when Riku glances across the field and catches a glimpse of Sora and Kairi grinning over at him, that his chest tightens with a now-familiar feeling.

He returns the smile, easy and genuine, and at their insistent beckoning he rises from his seat in the grass; patting away the loose blades that had gotten stuck to his pants, Riku begins a steady walk down the hill to meet them halfway.

“You looked lonely up there.” Sora opens with, reaching out with a hand — the other firmly clasped in Kairi's.

Riku takes the offering when it's given, linking his fingers between Sora's and pulling the pair closer with it. He dips down to press his lips to the sun-warm swell of Sora's cheek, smiling against freckled skin at the quiet giggle it draws from him, before twisting his head to capture Kairi's mouth against his own for a brief moment. She sighs into it, a soft little noise, and her eyes follow Riku's as they part.

“It's beautiful, isn't it?” Sora whispers into the space between them, turning to look over his shoulder at the vast meadow of flowers around them.

In the distance, the shape of the Gummi ship is just visible above a thicket of tall trees; Riku wanted to land it far enough out of the way, despite Sora's complaints about needing to walk further.

“One day, I'd like to introduce you to Flynn and Rapunzel.” He continues, squeezing each of their hands. “But I don't know if that would be breaking the rules.”

“Unlike you to care about those.” Riku laughs, ruffling Sora's hair with his free hand.

“Hey, he's gotten a lot better at it.” Kairi offers as backup, but her smile weakens the argument somewhat. “But the fact we're here at all is probably a little sketchy.”

“I won't tell if you don't.” Sora's grin reaches ear to ear, eyes glimmering with mischief.

“Deal.” The other two respond in unison, returning wide smiles of their own.

Riku and Kairi break out into a run, dragging Sora behind them until he kicks his legs into motion and catches up with them. They pull him into the deeper patches of flowers, where the grass is long enough to tickle against the backs of their knees, and it isn't long before one of them loses their balance and pulls the other two down to he ground with them. Riku ends up at the bottom of the pile, Sora's weight on his chest and Kairi pinning down his legs — there's a beat of silence before they break out into peals of laughter, and then an unhurried disentanglement of limbs that leads to Kairi's hand slipping around the back of Sora's neck to draw him down into a equally unhurried kiss.

“Save some for me, won't you?” Riku hums, smiling wide.

His hand is lingering on the curve of Sora's thigh, and he gives it a gentle squeeze; Sora offers him a look in response, only diverting his gaze from Kairi for a moment before biting down on the soft pulp of her lower lip and drawing a soft noise from her.

“Asshole.”

A half-shrug, a raised eyebrow, and Sora's entire face seems to light up when the smile returns to the corner of his mouth. He pulls away from Kairi, only to shift so that he lean down and give Riku the same treatment — catching the choked-off exhale with a deep kiss that he presses into, hand burrowing into the argent waves of Riku's hair.

There's another pair of lips against him, then, as Kairi takes Riku's hand in hers and tenderly kisses across each of his knuckles in turn. She sighs softly, breath ghosting across scarred and calloused skin, and when she's finished Kairi tucks her cheek into opened fingers to press another kiss against the meat of Riku's palm.

“I'm going to need two mouths if you're both this greedy.” She laughs, leaning against Sora's side when he rises up and resting her chin on his shoulder.

“You taste too good.” Riku offers, and Sora agrees with a quiet hum. “Addictive.”

“I could say the same about you both.”

Kairi reaches out to take one of each boy's hands in her own, squeezing tightly as her mouth splits into a wide smile.

“But I'm certainly not complaining.”

She coerces Sora to move, and with a little shoving and pulling ends up in the middle of them; Riku's arm slung low across her waist, and her own hand splayed across Sora's chest. They fall asleep like that, breaths and hearts in sync, and once they wake the sky is painted with the oranges and purples of twilight.

“We should get back.” Riku murmurs, burying his face between Kairi’s shoulder blades.

“Don't wanna…” Sora replies, now facing Kairi with his arm resting across Riku's thigh.

“Five minutes, boys. Then we get up.”

A pair of affirmative grunts, and Kairi smiles against Sora's neck.

She could definitely get used to this.
